ARC Review:Appealed (The Legal Briefs #3) by Emma Chase

When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate - and prized - parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.

Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.

And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.
**
When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore - she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart.

What I thought about Appealed

When Kennedy walks back into Brent's life, he's shocked to see that she's a much different girl than the one he remembers from boarding school.  She's polished and gorgeous and the prosecuting attorney on his latest defense case.  That sets things up for some wonderful banter between these two.  I absolutely loved Kennedy in this story--she's strong and smart and suspicious of Brent's motivations.  She does have some reason to be, considering she thinks he was responsible for some really harsh and nasty situations Kennedy had to deal with in boarding school.

Brent really doesn't have a clue about what happened to Kennedy, all he knows is that after a beautiful night together, she accepted a date the very next day from some other guy.  He's always been interested in her, but a series of misunderstandings pull these two apart for a number of years.

Now that they are back together, the sparks are flying, and Brent is absolutely sure of what he wants, if only they weren't opponents on the same case.  Somehow they manage to clear the air, but things take a more serious tone when Kennedy has to return to Nevada to retry a mob boss on appeal.

I adored the banter between these two in the first 2/3 of this book.  It was fabulous.  It kept things moving and was very entertaining.  I also loved Brent's dedication to making up for what happened when they were in boarding school. He was a real stand up guy about that, and understood how it would take some time for Kennedy to trust him again.

Once the case they were working on together comes to a conclusion, things slow down a little bit and after a fabulous beginning, the ending felt a little flat to me.  I enjoyed the book from start to finish, I just wish there was as much banter between these two at the end as there was in the beginning.  I also didn't think that Brent's leg situation was a necessary detail in this, and it really had little bearing on the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It was a quick read for me, and I liked both of these characters a lot.  And there's a great epilogue at the end to let the reader know what happened to them in the long term, and I loved that. If you are in the mood for some smart and sexy banter, you might really like this book.
