Review: In It To Win It (Wynn Hockey #2) by Kelly Jamieson

JP Wynn: I admit, I’ve made some bad choices—on and off the ice.
Now all I want to do is show my team I can control my emotions while I’m playing and redeem myself with my family, especially with my brother, Théo.
I hate that I hurt him and I’m determined to stay out of trouble.
But the hot bridesmaid at Théo’s wedding is tempting me into another bad decision.

A little flirting and a hook up with Taylor seem harmless . . . until Manny Martinez jumps me on the dance floor and starts beating the crap out of me.

And just like that I add one more bad decision to my résumé.

Taylor Hart: I always thought hockey players were hot. Now I think they’re crazy.

Manny broke my heart when he got traded to another team and left without even a goodbye.

Then he showed up at my best friend’s wedding. All I wanted to do was show Manny that I was over him.

And the groom’s sexy brother, JP, seemed more than willing to be my distraction.

But after the way everything went down, I want nothing to do with any of them.

Easier said than done. Especially when Lacey’s new brother-in-law is always around. . . .

And I keep thinking about the wedding night, when we snuck away to his room for the best sex of my life.

What I thought about In It To Win It

JP Wynn is the perennial hockey bad-boy and his penchant for fighting has him in a bit of hot water.  Determined to stay out of trouble and turn things around, he really tries to make better choices. But bad just seems to follow this bad boy.

Taylor Hart was drawn into the hockey player circle through her friendship with Lacey, JP's sister-in-law, but she's put off a bit when the guy she'd been seeing gets traded and leaves her in the dust without a word. In comes JP Wynn, who sets her blood on fire but then screws everything up beginning with a brawl at a wedding, Taylor swears off all hockey players.

But the night JP and Taylor shared just isn't forgotten and JP has it bad for Taylor. He's persistent, I'll give him that! She plays hard to get, but she really wants him too.  A change in living arrangements and her dog help move their relationship forward.

Everyone is happy until JP's new and better attitude is tested by Taylors ex again, and everything crashes down. It takes his brother Theo to knock some sense into him.

I enjoyed this second book in the Wynn hockey series from Kelly Jamieson.  There's something intriguing about this family that keeps me interested in this series.  JP and Taylor were very good together, both in and out of the bedroom, and their conflicts are quickly resolved and it's full steam ahead to the HEA. But the real magic in this series for me is the crazy family dynamic. Looking forward to more of the Wynn family!

Review: Lucy's Last Straw by Debbie Viggiano

It was the toothpaste smeared around the sink that broke my marriage. As I rubbed it away AGAIN, I was reminded of everything else I’ve put up with these twenty-five years. My husband’s obsession with his pension, his ability to charm me into every single one of his ideas, never being taken on a romantic date, let alone ravished on the patio (like the woman who lives next door)… small things, but the realisation was huge.

Just when Lucy Jones thinks her marriage is about to screech to a halt over toothpaste, her husband, Leo, announces he wants to move to tumbledown (clapped-out) Rose Cottage, and Lucy knows she’ll be the one managing the renovations.

Then along comes gorgeous builder Will, ten years younger and the only person actually listening to Lucy. His twinkly eyes and blowtorch smile are causing Lucy to break out in a hot sweat – but is it love, lust or simply dodgy hormones that are causing her heart to flutter?

Lucy loves her husband, but everyone knows that little things build up. And then they explode. Can Lucy keep it together, or will there be one last straw she might not be able to get over?

What I thought about Lucy's Last Straw

I'm always intrigued with author's who write romantic comedy because I find it's not really easy to do, so when I saw this book available to review I thought I'd give this "new-to-me" author a try. I was also interested in the content, as I don't see a whole lot of romance that deals with a long-time marriage situation.

Lucy's marriage has been a happy one for the most part, with the usual irritations like cleaning up his nasty toothpaste for the last number of years. When Leo starts bugging her to sell the house where they've lived and reared their children to move to a fixer-upper, she doesn't understand why, until he comes home having been downsized in his job. Moving to the ramshackle cottage just turned from an option to a necessity.

With the new cottage home comes an aggressive female neighbor who just happens to have eyes for Leo, and there's a younger contractor hired to fix up the cottage that sets Lucy's blood afire, waking up long-thought-dead hormones. I found this to really be a story about trust and temptation and love, and what happens in a long-term relationship. I really enjoyed this part of the story and found it captured many of the emotions in a seasoned marriage.

Things really heat up when Leo goes to the US for new job orientation, leaving Lucy home with the contractor and Leo with just as much temptation. The situation is perfectly setup for Lucy and Leo to look away from the irritating toothpaste around the sink (metaphorically speaking) and be tempted to try something new and exciting -- will they is the question? I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll just say the ending warmed my heart big-time.

Overall, I really liked this story. Told from Lucy's point of view, her little conversations with herself are some times funny, sometimes cute, sometimes cute and funny although not every one hits the mark. I liked it more when the characters in my head had a British accent which was a completely different reading experience for me.

I would definitely try out other titles from this author in the future.

Prior to turning her attention to writing, Debbie Viggiano was, for more years than she cares to remember, a legal secretary. She lives with her Italian husband, a rescued pooch from Crete, and a very disgruntled cat. Occasionally her adult children return home bringing her much joy... apart from when they want to raid the fridge, or eat her secret stash of chocolate.

What I thought about The King

The King picks up right where The Prince leaves off, with Caden becoming King and as such, he must distance himself from Brighton. Meanwhile, Brighton has her own agenda to find the evil Fae who tortured her and her mother. It involves some extremely dangerous activities and when Caden finds out, he’s really upset with the fact that Brighton is doing so. He wants her safe.

Through all of this, the attraction between them hasn’t died out, if anything it makes them hotter for each other, until one day… well, you can guess what happens! It’s steamy and hot, and everything for both Caden and Brighton. But afterwards, there are lots of mixed signals and
Brighton is knocked for a loop with additional news that just breaks her heart.

Brighton doesn’t get much time to nurse her heart though, because she’s got her own hell as the tables are turned on her. This is a really tough part of the book, but it’s also exciting, tension-filled and super engaging from this reader’s perspective. I was on the edge of my seat, turning the pages and wanting to know how everything was going to end. Jennifer L. Armentrout takes things to the edge here and I absolutely loved it every word of it. And that’s not all. There’s a great ending (you may see it coming) that left me breathless and impatient for the next installment in this story.

The King has everything that I love in Jennifer L. Armentrout’s stories – great characters, plenty of tension, and a reluctant hero that is about to have his world imploded. How does it get any better than that!

Definitely recommended!

Excerpt:

“I don’t think this is wise,” Tink said for what had to be the hundredth time since he realized I was getting ready for a night out. “Like I think this is very poorly thought-out, if you ask me, Lite Bright.”
“I didn’t ask you, Tink.”
My uninvited roommate of sorts hovered outside my bathroom. Tink wasn’t human, but right now, he looked like any normal twenty-something guy. Well, if normal, twenty-something guys had natural, shockingly white hair and were beautiful in a way that almost seemed fragile.
This was his full-grown Tink size, something I was still—even after all this time—getting used to. I was more accustomed to pint-sized Tink with the translucent wings. After all, he was a brownie.
After the attack that had taken my mother’s life and should’ve ended mine, he’d basically moved in with me. He’d been here for the last two years, something Ivy’s husband pretended to be grateful for, but in reality, I knew he secretly missed the dude.
“You should ask me,” he replied. When I glanced over at him, I got a little distracted by the dazzle…emanating from the sequin tank top he wore. It was so shimmery that I wondered if he was using some of his magic.
Tink may be a goofball, but he was also one of the most powerful creatures in our realm.
Thank God there was only one of him.
“I am a wealth of amazing advice,” he continued. Dixon, the cat he’d named after a Walking Dead character that Tink called “the hottest redneck eva” slinked around Tink’s ankles. The cat was all gray except for his tail, which looked like it had been dipped in white paint.
I snorted. “When have you ever given me good advice?”
“When I told you two weeks ago not to eat the whole carton of beignets because you’d get sick and you did,” he shot back.
I winced, picking up my mascara. I had gotten sick, but I deserved that carton of sugary, fried goodness. That day…
I didn’t want to think about that day.
“And what about when you ordered that supreme pizza and ate almost all of it?” he said. “I told you that it would probably make you feel bad later.”
Nose wrinkling, I tried to remember what night he was talking about. There were a lot of Friday nights—pizza night in my household—that I ate an entire pie and felt terrible afterward.
“Or how about that time I told you that the seared ahi tuna looked a little gray for my liking? But, oh no, Brighton knows better.” He reached down, scratching Dixon between the ears. “You ate it all, and then I spent the night cleaning up your puke.”
Ew.

Review:5 stars for Play to Win (Wynn Hockey #1) by Kelly Jamieson

Meet the Wynns—a hockey dynasty built on family, money, and drama. From USA Today bestselling author Kelly Jamieson, the first novel in a new series is a total win-win.

After an injury forced Théo Wynn to give up professional hockey, he turned to his second love: numbers. Now, as the general manager of his grandfather’s NHL team, the Los Angeles Condors, Théo is dying to prove to the rest of his family—especially the brother who betrayed him—that he’s just as successful as the rest of them. If only Théo had a gorgeous woman on his arm to complete the picture. . . .

Lacey Olson needs to get out of Las Vegas right now, thanks to her no-good, crooked brother. When a handsome stranger who’s out partying with friends comes to her rescue in the cocktail lounge where she works, they strike up a conversation that leads to a crazy plan: her leaving with Théo for L.A. tomorrow. A few drinks later, the idea gets even crazier: a quickie marriage that works for both of them.

But back in California, Lacey immediately turns Théo’s precise, well-ordered life into one big beach party. And before long, she’s tempting him with her smart mouth, sexy body, and sunny charm. The last thing Théo needs is a real relationship to distract him. Because he only plays to win. . . .

What I thought about Play to Win
Play to Win introduces a new hockey romance series from Kelly Jamieson with the Wynn family as the driving force of two California hockey franchises and numerous other hockey related ventures.

Theo Wynn is offered a GM job managing his grandfather's team which he reluctantly accepts -- there's a lot going on in this family outside of hockey that causes some contention between family members, so Theo is really on the hotseat with this new position. He's also recovering from a bruised heart after his brother does him dirty by stealing his girlfriend.

During a celebration for his new position, Theo meets Lacey at the bar. She's gorgeous and friendly and happens to be in big trouble with some mobsters through no fault of her own and loses her job. At Theo's insistence she joins his party and they spend the night together -- drinking, having fun and getting married.

The next day they are off to California and lots of family drama. While they both realize their marriage is one of convenience since having Lacey on his arm at family functions will lessen the hurt his brother caused, they do enjoy each other's company and that starts a very sweet and romantic falling-in-love story as they both realize the feelings they have for each other.

I really enjoyed this hockey romance. This book really wowed me and had me turning the pages. It's got an old school Dynasty-soap-opera feel to it with the complicated and contentious family tree ...i still can't remember who's related to who, but it doesn't matter because there's a great atmosphere to the book that just pulled me right in.

I had been on the fence about starting a new series from this author and I'm so very glad I did! I just loved Theo and Lacey's story. They are adorable together! Looking forward to more in this series.

What I thought about
Love, Loyalty and Mayhem

When I saw the authors contributing to this anthology, I had to get a copy.  Anthologies are always a great way to read favorite authors and find new ones, and there's both in Love, Loyalty and Mayhem for me.

Most of the titles in this anthology are rather short, which is great for those times between books or when there's the reading slump (we all get them).

In this anthology, I started with Laura Kaye's Ride Deep, another installment in her Raven Riders MC series.  It didn't take long to get reaquainted with the characters in this series, and the central figure in Ride Deep is Jagger, a brother who was wrongly imprisoned and then released  months later.  During his incarceration, he was involved in some classes taught at the prison, and his instructor known as "Teach" is suddenly in Slider's garage after being run off the road.

With different circumstances upon them Miranda aka Andi aka "Teach" looks at Jagger in a new light and when he steps up to provide the protection she needs, well, things get very frisky between them.

I really enjoyed this story, although it was a short five chapters, and I'm hoping there will be more to their story soon.  I'm also looking forward to reading some of the other titles in this anthology.  It's a steal for the price.

Definitely pick this up.  Recommended.

5 Stars for Fallen Saint (All the Pretty Things #2) by Monica James

 FALLEN SAINT
Volume Two
Monica James

Release date: July 14th 2019
Series:
All The Pretty Things Trilogy, Volume Two
Genre:
Dark Romance
Cover Designer:
Sommer Stein— Perfect Pear Creative Covers

Just as this nightmare began, I once again find myself bound, destination unknown. However, this time, my kidnapper is the man who shattered my world beyond repair.

Aleksei Popov—Russia’s number one mobster, and the man I was sold to.

His intentions for me are clear—submit, obey him, and call him master—but I won’t surrender. I’m not like the other girls. Whether that’s a blessing or curse, I’ve yet to decide. The problem is, my disobedience intrigues my captor all the more.

When we arrive in Russia, the rules change.

Saint, the man who was once a sinner, is my only salvation. What was forbidden now gives me hope that there is light in the darkness. He will risk everything to set me free.

But behind these opulent walls, things aren’t what they seem, and when the fine line between pleasure and pain begins to blur, only one thing matters—saving my soul.

I will lie.

Cheat.

Steal.

I was once an angel, but now…I’m a fallen saint, ready to inflict my own pain and burn this hellhole to the ground.

What I thought about Fallen Saint

Saint and his Angel are rescued from their island by the very person they are running from, the Russian mobster, Aleksei Popov, and are headed for what they both know will be hard times in Russia.

I'm not going to give any details beyond the fact that this book was terrific in continuing the story started in Bad Saint. Both Saint and Willow are falling harder for each other which is so very dangerous for them, yet they can't stop or hide the feelings that are so strong between them.

There are plenty of new characters in Fallen Saint as Aleksei's friends and enemies are revealed. When it is discovered that Willow does indeed have something she can offer Alek and others, a special night is planned for her, an event that makes her loathe her captor even more, although her feelings about Alek are conflicted on some level. But she's got a plan and so does Saint -- the question is whether they can pull it off and stay alive in the process.

There are some really great twists and turns in this second book in the series and I absolutely loved that about it! So many things I didn't expect -- and that always makes for a great read. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger that sets things up for the conclusion and I just can't wait to find out how this all works out!

Oh, this series! I love a well crafted dark romance and this series has it all! These two books have been a great introduction to a new author for me, and it's made me a fan for life.
