Excerpt

In so many ways, Lydia should have known. From the moment Daniel Joseph had appeared in her office doorway, there had been something about him.

But she hadn’t expected . . . this.

“Unless you tell me to go,” he said in a husky voice,

“I’m going to kiss you.”

As Lydia stared up into his face, they both knew

what she wanted. What she needed. Still, she kept them on the edge for a heartbeat or two.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

“Good,” he growled.

When he lowered his head, there was a rumble of satisfaction in his chest—and then she wasn’t hear- ing anything. Thinking anything. Worried about any- thing.

As big and strong as he was, his lips were soft against her own. Gentle, too, as if he knew she wanted to be handled with care—not because she didn’t want him, but because she did. Too much. And God, there were more reasons to pull away than get close to him, except there was no denying the chemistry. The connection. The heat.

And the experience was even better than the anticipation.

Aware that she was going to stop this sooner than she wanted, but much later than she should, Lydia lifted her arms and put them on his shoulders. His heavy body was rock-hard under his windbreaker, the muscles roping up to his neck—and that was where her hands went.

She just wanted to see if his hair was as thick and lush as it looked—

It was.

As she dug into the waves, he purred in response, like he was a great cat and she had found his favorite stroking place. And that was when he wrapped an arm around her waist. She did not feel trapped, though. She had the sense, as he continued to stroke her lips softly, that he would let her go immediately.

Not that she was going anywhere anytime the hell soon.

Inch by inch, their bodies came into full contact, her breasts against his chest, the front of her thighs meeting his, their hips brushing. And then the kiss deepened, his tongue licking into her—

Letting out another moan, she tightened her hold on his nape, in his hair, a sense of desperation making her rougher than she should have been—she was holding him to her now, grabbing on to him. But he was going with it. One of his hands traveled from her shoulder to her waist, to her hip, and she moved against his palm, imagining what it would be like to be naked with him touching her.

With those workman hands.

Daniel eased back and stroked her hair away from her face. “You’re a good kisser, you know that?”

“Am I?” She smiled like an idiot. “I could have sworn it was you.”

“I guess it’s us.” His eyes roamed her face. And then one side of his lips tilted up. “I’m going to go now.”

Lydia exhaled in surprise—but like she was going to sleep with him here on the mauve kitchen floor?

Not a bad idea, actually, she thought as she glanced down.

“Okay,” she said. “I understand. We do work together—”

“That’s not why I’m leaving.”

“So why are you?”

He traced her cheek. Then her jawline. “If I stay, I’m not going to let you get any sleep at all.” He stepped back. “You know where to find me, if you need me. And I’ll see you after we’re allowed to wake up at four-oh-one a.m.”

She nodded. “Good night, Daniel.”

Turning away, he lifted a hand over his shoulder. When he got to the door, he said, “Don’t forget to lock up.”

And then he was gone.

 What I thought about Claimed

Lydia Susi is dedicated to studying her wolves.  She's part of a research project tagging and tracking them and making sure they continue to thrive.  When she comes across another poisoned wolf, she suspects the new developer who is working to get rid of the wolves habitat for a new luxury hotel.

When a drifter comes to town looking for a job, he comes to Lydia to apply for her open maintenance position.  She's drawn to Daniel John, but is hesitant since he's told her he doesn't stay in one place very long.  But there is definite attraction between them that they both won't be able to resist.

I was pulled right into this story.  There is a lot of information in this book as it sets up how this world relates to the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.  The connection between Claimed and BDB comes through Xhex who is having nightmares about her past, and her hellren John Matthew who wants to help her.  Turns out that Xhex knows something about what's going on up on that mountain.  I've never been a big Xhex fan, but she and JM felt like old friends in this story.

There is a different sort of connection between Lydia and Daniel John. There was physical attraction for sure, but it's a different sort of yearning from the BDB couples.  I don't know if that explains it, but I did like the relationship between Lydia and Daniel from the start. It was steamy and full of promise,  but the other aspects of introducing this world took precedence over their connection until the late pages.

I couldn't help but wonder if there is a connection between John Michael and Daniel John -- that two first name thing and I'm hoping there's more to Daniel's background than we know so far in the story.

There's a lot to this story that happens in the final twenty percent of the book.  I loved the ending here. It wasn't hard to figure out there would be unresolved stuff too when I still had so many questions 80 percent in, but I didn't make mind (too much) although ..well I won't say more because I don't want to spoil, but you'll be holding your breath in those final pages.

I NEED more of this world. I have so many questions..

There's something I really like about JR Ward's writing in her non-BDB stories. Even though this one is set in the BDB world, it still has a different tone and voice which I loved. Maybe I just pay more attention in a fresh series. And I found Claimed to be fresh and familiar at the same time and it made my time spent reading worthwhile.

Can't wait for more of this story!

What I thought about Hex on the Beach

This is a review of A Grave Girls' Getaway by Jeaniene Frost in this anthology containing three stories from Jeaniene Frost, Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr.

It's been a while since I've read a Cat & Bones story, so I was eager to get my eyes on this one. Without giving away too much, (and readers should be aware there are spoilers from previous released books in this series in this short story) it seems like Cat and Bones have settled into their own version of domestic bliss. When Bones arranges for a girls-weekend getaway for Cat and Denise, the ladies start out agreeing that it's a great idea -- until it's not! I'd forgotten how much I like Denise's sense of humor, and Cat's laser-focus on mixing it up with other paranormals. When she smells blood while walking the beach with Denise, well-- she's just got to check it out and see what's going on.

What follows is Cat all-the-way! I was reminded how much I love this character because she gets herself into a huge mess of epic proportions when mixing it up with this group of supernaturals. It ends up taking more than Denise and her new demon friend can handle, even with their considerable talents.

I'm smiling writing this review remembering how much I loved this story. Of course there's some Bones and Spade involvement too, so fans of this vampire duo/family -- you won't be sorry grabbing a copy of this. I did feel teased a bit some with Bones new abilities, and I really hope that means Jeaniene Frost is brewing up a new Cat & Bones story for us. Finger-crossed as they say!

DeliverUs from Evil Playlist:

What I thought about Deliver Us From Evil

Punky finally gets to dole out his revenge in Deliver Us From Evil, the third book in the Deliver Us From Evil trilogy. Monica James brings it with a full-on dark romance that gives Punky and his Babydoll their HEA -- only it's not an easy ride to get there.

Continuing to find liars and betrayers, Punky must decide whether he wants to stay in this world that has taken so much from him.  I think this was my favorite part of this trilogy -- Punky has a big heart in him that he is fighting to keep amidst all the back-stabbing and the fight for ruling the area.

I was really excited for this book. Punky's journey has been a dangerous, bloody mess and if anyone deserved a HEA.  And while I thought this was a good conclusion to the series, I also thought there was something missing here in terms of emotions.  Maybe Punky was just tired of it all... maybe too much had happened to him and his lady love, I can't put my finger on it, but it felt a little too much of a checklist to deal with all of his enemies, and less about wanting to hold on to the bit of good he had in his life. Other readers opinions may vary on this -- it was just my feeling that the emotional content was more a creation of the external circumstances, rather than the feelings the characters had for each other.

No matter though, Deliver Us From Evil had the usual villains, twists and turns that I've come to expect from Monica James and I did like that about Deliver Us From Evil.

Cover design by Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations

RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2021

It’s a tale as old as time: the bad boy meets the good girl. He makes a daring proposition. Then the boy gets a mysterious head injury and loses a year of his life…

The first time I meet Rickie, I don’t know what to make of him. The second time we meet, he doesn’t remember the six hours we spent together. Or standing me up afterward.

I’m not the same, either. I’ve got secrets. I’ve told lies. Bad boys aren’t my type, anyway. Even the ones with troubled gray eyes.

But now we’re roommates. Cue the awkward moments in the hallway when he’s wearing only a towel and a smile. He’s determined to win me over, and his talented hands weaken my resolve.

It’s all fun and games until my past rears its ugly head and his secrets come to light, shaking our fragile connection, maybe even breaking it…

Note: this is Daphne Shipley's story. Contents include Vermonty ice cream flavors, nerdy awkwardness, tattoos, and a playboy grandpa.

Excerpt

I read all the way to the highway exit, but I only get halfway through the first article. It’s dense and full of statistical analysis that’s over my head.

By the time Rickie rolls down the exit ramp, I feel the onset of a full-blown case of imposter syndrome. Dr. Drummond is expecting me to be sharp. What if they ask me to work on this type of analysis, and I can’t do it?

“I see the ice cream place,” Rickie says. “But there’s no entrance back onto the highway. What the hell?”

“Doesn’t matter,” I mumble. “It’s three miles down a side road to exit 6.” I close the journal with a sigh. I feel so panicky right now. I’ve always tried to be the smartest girl in the room. But it’s all an act. I’m obviously the worst kind of dunce—the kind that can’t see her own mistakes until it’s way too late. (See: the last twelve months of my life.)

Is it normal to have a midlife crisis right before your twenty-first birthday?

Rickie rolls into the gravel parking lot of the Dreamy Creemee and puts the truck in a shady spot. He rolls down the windows before killing the engine. It’s getting toward dinner hour, so there aren’t many people here. Just a couple of moms pushing toddlers on the swing set.

And I’m quietly having a panic attack in the passenger seat.

I take a slow but shaky breath. Do I even want ice cream? Is there a flavor on that signboard that could take me out of my own head? I reach for the door handle, but Rickie stops me.

“Look," he says. "About that time we shared a ride home from Connecticut...”

No,” I say forcefully. If he makes me relive that embarrassing experience, I might lose my cool. “Just forget it, okay? So what if you ghosted me?”

His eyes widen. But my rant is only picking up steam.

“None of that matters. I didn’t even blame you. And the only way I'm going to make it through this year is if I put Connecticut behind me, okay? Just leave it alone.”

My voice cracks on that last word, and I realize that I might actually cry. Which is a thing I never do. But Harkness College was my dream, and I blew it. My damn eyes get hot and my throat constricts.

“S-so just forget it," I squeak. “It's already in the past. It can just stay there.”

Rickie's gray eyes are soft now. And they're moving closer. To my utter surprise, he leans forward and presses a kiss to my lips.

So soft, my brain sputters.

“Shh,” he says against my lips. His kiss is warm and unhurried. Like a ray of sunshine when you’re shivering.

For once, my squirrel brain forgets to scurry. And I just let it happen. He kisses me again. It’s still gentle. His bright eyes measure me. I don’t know what he sees. But whatever it is, he decides he likes it.

Those soft lips brush and press. Again. And I'm only human. Rickie's surprisingly tender kiss has caught me at a vulnerable moment. I lean in, experimenting with the slide and pressure of his mouth against mine. A sizzle of heat flashes across my skin. It’s the strangest sensation—as if he’s transferred an ounce of that devil-may-care attitude across the steering column and right into my soul. I drink him in, lips parted. Ready for him to take it further.

But then it ends. Rickie sits back, his head cocked to the side, as if in deep contemplation.

I’m bereft. “Wh-what was that for?” I stammer.

I expect a smirk. But his expression remains soft. “You seemed a little freaked. So I brought you to an ice cream place on a hot summer’s day. But that wasn’t enough, apparently. You needed even more distraction. So I gave it to you. And I’m good at that. A real specialist.”

Replying is impossible. All I can do is sit here and try to process that kiss. That lovely kiss.

He really has some nerve.

What I thought about Waylaid

Sarina Bowen delivers yet another satisfying new adult romance based around the Shipley family with Waylaid, the story of Rickie Ralls and Daphne Shipley.  Readers were introduced to Rickie in Heartland, the previous book in this series.

When Rickie rents his house out for the summer, he ends up living at the Shipley farm and lending a hand with the chores.  Daphne is there too, and these two have some history -- if only Rickie could remember it.

Daphne has her secrets too, and she's not willing to share them. But when it turns out there is a connection between Daphne's secrets and Rickie's lost memories, everything explodes in a very exciting scene that has both of them reaching out to family for help.  I adored this story in so many way, but I've got to say the ending is everything and multiple reads have occurred.  It's just so good.

I love Daphne and Rickie together. They are really sweet and even though it took some time for everything to fall in place for them, Waylaid was a satisfying romance reading experience.

There's lots of Shipley's in this book, including Grandpa and his shenanigans (love him), grumpy Griff and Dylan Shipley.  Really, I love visiting with all of them -- any time!  And there's a wedding too that made my heart sing.

What really distinguishes this series for this reader are the familial relationships that bring real heart (and often conflict) to these stories and have as much impact as the romance between the main characters.  The unresolved tensions between Daphne and May evolve to a new place in Waylaid and those were some of the most emotional scenes for this reader.  I've always had a girl-crush on May Shipley and Waylaid made me love her even more with May's lawyer-ly skills and sisterly love in the exciting conclusion.

Another terrific addition to a terrific series.  Loved it!

What I thought about The Brazen
Willa Nash returns to Calamity Montana with The Brazen for a story about Kerrigan Hale, a local Calamity entrepreneur. When her financial advisor and backer dies in a tragic accident, Kerrigan is forced to deal with his angry grandson, Pierce Sullivan.
Pierce has some family grudges that he's playing out and demands that Kerrigan come up with the money loaned to her. They start out as enemies as Pierce tries to put Montana behind him. But everything changes when an angry, intoxicated Kerrigan makes a visit to Pierce's hotel room where one things leads to another and they engage in a blistering kiss.
They say there is a fine line between love and hate and Kerrigan and Pierce start out straddling that line.  Kerrigan hates Pierce, but that kiss...  well, romance readers know right where this is going.  The kiss becomes important to both of them -- and when Pierce and Kerrigan both are stranded at grandad's luxury cabin during a storm, it leads them to explore whether that amazing kiss was just a one time thing or not.
The Brazen is a steamy story that does contain the elements of "insta-love" but it is done in a very believable way. There's something between these two than neither can deny but it does take time, a huge secret and a burned house to get everyone on the same page.
I didn't like Pierce at first, but I did understand his anguish and how his anger manifested.  But he comes through in a major way when it counts, making for a really sweet story that shows the lovely way he demonstrates how he cares.
Most of all, I loved what this story had to say about small towns and the loss of people and businesses that keep them alive.  For me, this story was a lot about Calamity and Kerrigan's dedication to the town she loves.
The Brazen is a feel-good enemies to lovers romance that won't take long to read and left this reader smiling. I like this author's take on living and thriving in a small town.

About the Book:

She’s a political princess and media darling...

There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Yeah, right. Tell that to the PR firm that handles Tracy’s very prominent political family. Pushed by scandal from Boston to the boondocks, now she’s on the other side of the serving tray, dishing up beer and burgers, hoping no one recognizes her. But there’s something very familiar--and maddeningly tempting--about the new caterer at Speakeasy.

He’s a cranky recluse...

Colton was the star of the celebrity chef circuit until he wasn’t anymore. Now he lives in a remote country cabin and spends his time alone, far from the spotlight and liking it that way. Until the gorgeous new waitress at Speakeasy starts poking at his resolve and suddenly all he wants is to see her let down her hair. And spread it all over his pillow. She’s got secrets he knows he won’t like, but he can’t stay away from her.

She lives in the spotlight, and he hates attention. When her public life collides with his private one, can their love write a fairy-tale ending after all?

What I thought about Sideways

Tracy Thayer needs to disappear while her prominent political family deals with the fall out created by outing the fact she is the owner of the high-cost dating platform called Fairy Tale Beginnings. She leaves town and ends up in Colebury.

Colton Vega came from the city too -- a former celebrity chef in search of a new life and way of living. He's grumpy. Seriously grumpy. He could have a grump-off with Griff Shipley and win hands down. And even though he's a bit brutal when he first meets Tracy at Speakeasy, he can't get her out of his head.

I really loved this story. There's so much transformation going on with these characters in one way or another. They were just so good for each other in so many ways. I was really engaged with this story, especially since it was difficult to see how they could close the gap between what they both wanted and the other factors keeping them apart.

There's steamy romance and tender moments here that I loved, and some drama when truths are revealed. Loved the (literally) sweet ending too. Even though I found the circumstances that brought Tracy to Colebury a bit overblown, I really enjoyed this story and will be looking for more from this first-time-for-me author.

About the Book:

She needs a fresh start. He wants a second chance…

My new job as a chef in a small town was supposed to be my ticket to peace and quiet. I didn’t expect to run into the former hockey star who gave me the hottest nights of my life. And, oops, he’s sort-of my new boss. So much for keeping my past where it belongs.

Ty still thinks I’m the fun party girl. He has no idea how much things have changed. One thing that hasn’t changed: the spark between us. It’s hotter than the blowtorch I use on my crème brûlée.

I’m already keeping secrets, so what’s one more? Our tryst is forbidden, it’s fun, and it gets complicated as fast as you can say “check, please.” I didn’t expect to have a future with Ty. And I definitely didn’t expect to have a baby with him.

Some falls are harder than others. But it depends on who’s there to catch you...

 What I thought about Heartwood

Belle is starting over and her new job as chef at Speakeasy is just what she needs in her new life in Colebury. When she finds that the manager of Speakeasy is an old acquaintance and sometimes casual lover, she's happy to reconnect. But Belle isn't the same person she was back then, and neither is Ty, although their physical connection and chemistry is still in place.

What follows is a very sweet falling-in-love story between two people who have had reconnected after some hard knocks and find that the sexual chemistry they enjoyed is still intact. I really liked Ty and Belle together and I especially enjoyed Ty finding himself falling hard for Belle in a major way.

Heartwood is a low conflict sort of romance where the road to the HEA has a few small bumps to bring a little drama into the story. it's a quick, satisfying romance and love story that deals with mental health in a very sensitive manner. I did like this part of the story very much. Belle's situation is one where I could definitely relate and I appreciated the way it was handled in the story.

Overall, a cute and satisfying second chance romance.
