Happy Release Day to Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen

Q: What’s the opposite of a “meet cute?”

A: Meeting a handsome guy at the very moment you’re breaking out in hives all over your body.

The mysterious allergic reaction I have at the hockey game is terrifying. But it’s just a little less terrifying when a big, strong equipment manager for the Brooklyn Bruisers saves the day.

That’s how I meet James “Jimbo” Carozza. When I’m alone and frightened, he gets me the help I need, and delivers me safely to the emergency room.

Too bad I didn’t even get his number.

5 Big Stars for You Can Run ( A Laurel Snow Thriller#1) by Rebecca Zanetti

Suspense, danger, romance, and family drama converge as a rising star profiler strives to stay one step ahead of the criminal mind—and discovers that her own demons may be the hardest to outrun…

Laurel Snow wouldn’t call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, WA, hometown, she’ll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there’s Laurel’s attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene—and into the wilderness…

A former soldier and a trained sniper, Huck’s thirst for blood is rivaled only by his fierce pursuit of Laurel. He’s been burned by love, wounded by the government, and betrayed before, and to say he has trust issues is the ultimate understatement. Plus, he might be closer to this killer than anybody knows…

Once in the heart of darkness with Huck, Laurel must negotiate her distracting desire for him, her complex rapport with Abigail—and her mission to find a serial killer among a growing list of suspects and a danger that’s far too close to home. So close in fact, Laurel fears she will never find her way back to the woman she once was…

What I thought about You Can Run

Wow! What a ride!  It's been a long time since story had me this engaged and will definitely be on my best of 2022 list. I was hooked right into this story from the opening pages.

FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow is an expert profiler.  When her mother asks her to come home because her uncle is under suspicion of terrible crimes, Laurel finds herself right in the middle of a active serial killer investigation that brings new revelations in her personal life. More about that in a minute.

Huck Rivers wants to live a solitary life as a expert guide and wilderness rescue.  He's not big on peopling but when Laurel comes to town and needs his help to find the serial killer, he is intrigued with the special agent.  There's a whole lot of spark between these two and I especially liked how the relationship between these two developed.  It seemed like things were going in the right direction by the end of this book, so I'm hoping there will be more of Laurel and Huck in future books.  They really leap from the pages when they are working on the case together.

I loved Laurel's journey to understanding more about herself. The creepy Dr. Craine was an interesting part of the story that left other loose ends needing resolutions. I'm not sure if I want to see her again, but I like that all of the characters had a big impact on this reader.

So overall, I found everything to be perfect -- the story, the pacing, the characters, the way the it kept me guessing until the very end -- and I can't wait for more.  This is my first title I've read from this author and I am hooked.  I want more Laurel Snow!

5 Stars for Wilder With You (Wilder Adventures #3) by Serena Bell

Who knew pretending could be so hot?

Clark: It started as a joke. After all, I'd never pretend to date a woman just to get my mom and sister off my back.

I would, however, pretend to date her to get her ex-husband off hers.

Now the two of us, the wilderness warrior and the wedding planner, are stuck sharing a very small tent. I had no idea how fast things would heat up in here, or how hard it would be to keep my hands—among other things—to myself.

I also didn't guess how quickly the news of our "relationship" would spread to my big, nosy family.

We can't "break up" yet, because she's planning my brother's wedding and I'm his best man. Through venue visits, DIY disasters, and Vegas trips, we're thrown together, and the chemistry's off-the-charts. But the kicker is, I feel like she gets me.

Maybe that's what scares me the most. I'm still reeling from the loss of my wife, and she's still hurting from her ex's betrayal. There's no way this can ever be real.

But what if I'm starting to hope it is?

A steamy small town rom com from the USA Today bestselling author of Hold On Tight and Sleepover.

What I thought about Wilder with You

Clark Wilder is a widow who blames himself for his wife's death and has vowed never to fall in love again because it hurts too much. Jessa Olsen is divorced wedding planner who has also vowed not to get involved again because her ex hurt her in the worst way. When these two get together, there's a spark of something between them.

To get the Wilder's off his back, Clark and Jessa decide they are "fake dating" but just about everyone can tell there is nothing fake about it. But Clark is still dealing with his grief and the fact that Jessa and his wife were friends. It takes some time for them to figure it out, all the while building a relationship that is just so lovely, as a reader I couldn't help but cheer them on.

I've enjoyed the romances in this series very much, and this one between Clark and Jessa is absolutely adorable. Thank you, Serena Bell for curing my romance reading slump with this wonderful story of opening hearts and moving forward. I adored this story and could not put it down. It left me feeling happy and that's why I read romance!

Blog Tour Review & Excerpt: The Night She Went Missing by Kristen Bird

The Night She Went Missing

Author: Kristen Bird

ISBN: 9780778332107

Publication Date: February 8, 2022

Publisher: MIRA

Book Summary:

Months after she disappeared, a high school senior is found floating in the town’s harbor, alive but unconscious. Where has Emily been, and how did she get into the water? In Kristen Bird’s “gripping” (Publishers Weekly) debut The Night She Went Missing, three friends-to-frenemies mothers in a close-knit, wealthy Texas community decide to investigate after the police hit a dead end. While each woman has secrets to protect, they’ll all be forced to look at their own children – or each other’s – to uncover the truth.

With the relentless pacing and complex female characters of Big Little Lies and an expertly crafted small town setting, The Night She Went Missing introduces Kristen Bird as a new force in the world of domestic suspense. Her novel goes well beyond that, exploring complex questions about mothers and daughters, loss, and the line between taking chances and living dangerously.

EMILY

They find me faceup in the murky water of the harbor on the day of my funeral. Or memorial service. Whatever. It’s not like there’s much difference. Dead is dead.
Except I’m not. I. Am. Not. Dead. I would pinch myself if I could move.
“Can you hear me? Hey, what’s your name? Can you open your eyes?”
My eyes are as dense and heavy as basalt. Basalt: rich in iron and magnesium, Mr. Schwartz penned on the board during our volcanic rock unit in eighth grade. I fight to come out of the emptiness that has held me for the past…the past what? Hours? Days? Weeks?
I attempt to whisper my name even though my eyelids remain anchored. Emily. That’s right. Emily. I can’t remember the last time I voiced those three syllables.
    “Pull her up.”
Hands yank at me, jerking me from the arms of the water. Two hands wander up my body—over my feet, my legs, the arch of my hips, my arms, onto my neck, stopping at my forehead. This touch is not like the familiar plying of the boy I love, so fiery that it almost stings.
This touch is necessary, cold, perfunctory. Perfunctory, Mrs. Abbot, my sophomore English teacher had pronounced for us students as we learned the word for the first time. P-E-R-F-U—
The voice cuts in. “Tell them we have a girl, a teenager. No broken bones as far as I can tell but looks like she’s been out here for hours. Unconscious, but breathing on her own.” His voice muffles as he turns his head. “I think she might be Emily.”
Suddenly, a brilliant choir of tenors and baritones and basses burst forth. “The Emily?”
Emily. Yes, that’s me. What a comforting thing to hear one’s name spoken by those who can point the way home. I breathe in gratitude and descend into the lightness of sleep before a hand
touches my cheek again.
    “You awake, Emily?”
The swooshing of the waves calls to me, a reminder that the song of the deep is steady despite all the new sounds: The bustle of work boots, the hum of the boat waiting to churn to life and set out across the open sea.
“Your mama’s been looking for you, Ms. Emily. You gave us all a fright. You hear me?” The man seems to sense that I can hear his words while my body remains frozen despite the warmth of the water and the sun overhead. “You’re gonna be okay, sweetheart. Yes, ma’am, you’re gonna make it just fine. Got a daughter about your age, and I woulda been worried sick if my girl had gone missing for weeks on end. Your mama sure is gonna be happy.”
A nasally voice now. “Where you think she’s been all this time? Turned into a mermaid?” The boy chuckles.
    “Hush, Beau.”
The man’s hand touches my forehead, his fingers sandpapery with callouses.         “Now, sweetheart, if you can open your eyes for a sec, I can introduce you properly to the crew. We’re getting you help as fast as we can, but you can go ahead and open them eyes before all the medics arrive. They’d be good and relieved to see you looking around.”
I try. Oh, how I want to f licker them open, but my head aches and oblivion pulls harder. The siren call of the void is too tempting to resist.

What I thought about The Night She Went Missing

When Caroline Callahan has to move her family to Galveston after a workplace scandal, she's not really prepared for a domineering mother-in-law who practically runs the town, or that her daughter, a high school senior would go missing.

The story begins with setting up the secrets the women in the town are keeping.  There's Morgan, who's husband has left her and Alex her son who is accused of rape. There's the widow Leslie, Rosalyn Callahan's right hand helper in all things social in the town, and her two sons who are shrouded in suspicion.  And then there's Caroline carrying around a load of guilt, especially after making her daughter leave their Oregon home for a new place in her senior year.

The story is told from all four female points of view.  At first I found this a bit confusing, but it worked to give just enough information to make this reader start lining up my own suspects in the disappearance of Emily.  While I did think the first half of this book was a bit slow paced for me, things really take off after Emily's disappearance and I couldn't put this book down. There are plenty of suspects to choose from too!

Memory loss is a big theme in this story and Emily must take matters into her own hands to discover just what happened the night she went missing.  I did like the inclusion of her point of view in this story.

This worked very nicely as a domestic suspense story for me.  It really kept me guessing until the end, although I did suspect the perpetrators early on and I liked that about the story.  It gives just enough of a hint of what might have happened and doesn't lay everything out until the end.  I was surprised by some of the twists and revelations.

Overall, a very satisfying suspenseful story.

What I thought about The Damaged

I have to keep this review short because it's so hard to talk about this series without spilling any spoilers and I don't want to do that.

There is something about this story that just sucks you right into the world of wealth, technology and competitiveness that is Bailey and Kash's world. I really couldn't put this down until I got to the end, and omg, it's a doozy of an ending.

The relationship between Bailey and Kash is really the centerpiece of this story, They really do fit together... or do they? Ha, there are parts that may have you questioning things. Loved that about this story.

I must be honest and say there are some things that I just don't believe, and the graduate school wasn't at all like the technology graduate degree program I was in, but I was willing to overlook that and just enjoy the ride. The second half of the book is really when things get going and some very unexpected things occur.

So overall, if you are looking for an addictive story you might like this trilogy. You'll need to read the first book in the series, The Insiders, before reading The Damaged. This is not a standalone. But it is one crazy fun ride!

Release Day Review: A Chance For Us ( Willow Creek Valley #4) By Corinne Michaels

A Chance for Us by Corinne Michaels is now live!

My marriage started as a lie.

But some lies are worth telling.

My father's dying wish was to walk me down the aisle, and I'd do anything for him.

Even marry a man I don't love.

So when my fiance jilts me only days before the ceremony, I turn to my college friend, Oliver Parkerson, and convince him to marry me.

My family hasn't met either man, so I'm confident we can pull this off.

But the feelings, our touches, the way my heart beats for him... none of it feels pretend. The way he holds me at night and carries me through loss tells me he's not acting either.

I didn't mean to fall for my fake husband, but real love was the one thing I couldn't predict.

Except, nothing built on lies can last--I know that better than anyone.

But the truth might tear us apart forever.

What I thought about A Chance For Us
I always know I'm going to have an emotional ride with a Corinne Michaels title, and A Chance for Us is no different.

All Maren wants to do is give her dying father his deepest wish to walk his daughter down the aisle and know she's taken care of. When that doesn't work out as planned she asks Oliver Parkerson to engage in a fake marriage for her father's sake.

It doesn't take long for a really bad plan to get worse and there's no doubt there is heartache coming.  That really is the charm of a story like this... you know it's coming ... the fun is reading how it all plays out and there's plenty of family drama to keep things interesting.

It's easy to cheer for these characters to find love and that's what I've liked the most about this Willow Creek Series. It's always sad to get to the end of a series, and A Chance for Us was just the perfect wrap up for the Parkerson siblings.

Review: The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson

A mysterious plague that causes random bouts of violence is sweeping the nation. Now three generations of women must navigate their chilling new reality in this moving exploration of identity, cycles of abuse, and hope.

Chelsea Martin appears to be the perfect housewife: married to her high school sweetheart, the mother of two daughters, keeper of an immaculate home.

But Chelsea's husband has turned their home into a prison; he has been abusing her for years, cutting off her independence, autonomy, and support. She has nowhere to turn, not even to her narcissistic mother, Patricia, who is more concerned with maintaining the appearance of an ideal family than she is with her daughter's actual well-being. And Chelsea is worried that her daughters will be trapped just as she is--until a mysterious illness sweeps the nation.

Known as The Violence, this illness causes the infected to experience sudden, explosive bouts of animalistic rage and attack anyone in their path. But for Chelsea, the chaos and confusion the virus causes is an opportunity--and inspires a plan to liberate herself from her abuser.

What I thought about The Violence

The Violence takes on what is sure to be a controversial topic with a story about a post-pandemic illness that causes it's victims to perform acts of extreme violence. I thought it was interesting to think about violence in abuse in this manner, so I took a chance on this title.

It's clear from the start this book is going to be one trigger warning after another, and that was certainly the case. There's plenty of abuse and violence in detail, and it didn't always work for me in the story. It's not just about the Violence illness, it's about broader systemic abuse. Sometimes enough is enough.

Overall, I thought it was a creative and yet fanciful (in a negative way) story of how abuse shapes a person. At least that's what I got out of it. There's a bit of a thriller and dark intensity in there too, but this is definitely a book you need to be in the mood for.
