Review, Excerpt & Giveaway:Respect (The Breaking Point #3) by Jay Crownover

 About RESPECT:

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who called a corrupt kingdom home sweet home.

Protected and sheltered from the worst the world had to offer, she fell in love with the crumbling city that burned and blazed around her. Every dirty corner, every scary shadow, found a place within her heart. So did a man who was violent and dangerous, just like the streets she claimed as her own.

He was all business and brutality, except when it came to her. With her, he was calm, caring, and heartbreakingly patient.

He warned her over and over that he wasn't the man for her, but she refused to listen. She never expected either the streets or their enforcer to hurt her, since she'd given her heart so completely to both.

She should have known the streets in the Point were always going to be savage, and so was the man committed to keeping control of them in the hands of criminals and bloody kingpins.

Blindsided by a betrayal which cut so deeply she was sure the wounds would never heal, the princess fled the home she loved and the man who broke her heart. Throwing away her rusted, twisted crown was supposed to help her forget. All it did was make her long for everything she left behind. She told herself she would never go back, but in this tormented kingdom, family is everything. Eventually, she has no choice but to return.

While she was gone, the people who loved her worked hard to make the city safe, and the man who destroyed her sank deeper into the darkness. Going back shouldn't feel like surrender... but it does. As this pretty princess hovers on the edge of the unknown, the past attacks with a vengeance. It's a good reminder that puppy love eventually grows up and turns into something with sharp teeth and one hell of a bite.

She never asked for the keys to the kingdom. She'd much rather go out and build her own.

~Karsen~
Before I could think about what I was doing or why I was doing it, I balled my hand into a fist and swung at his face. Obviously, he wasn’t expecting the attack because he didn’t move or bother to block the strike. Instead, I clocked him on the cheek, which whipped his head to the side. My fingers stung as I shook them out and his dark-gray eyes glittered with something dangerous as he lifted his fingers to the reddening spot.
“That’s one way to say hello.” The rough timbre of his voice still had the power to make my knees weak and send shivers racing down my spine.
I crossed my arms over my chest and glared at him. “I’m about to say goodbye. Get out of my apartment…Now.” I wasn’t ready for him, not now, not ever.
He shook his head and I noticed his dark hair now had threads of silver through it at the temples. He was twenty-six when we met, twenty-eight when he broke my heart, which meant he was now in his early thirties. Young for silver hair, but considering how many times he’d almost died while I lived in the Point—who knows how many more times that’d happened since I left—his aging prematurely made sense.
“Karsen.” My name again, but there was so much he wasn’t saying in that simple acknowledgement.
“I’m serious. Get out, Booker. There’s a reason I’ve been gone for four years…that’s you. I never want to see you again.” I wanted to shove him out the door and put my foot in his ass, but he was too damn big.
Slowly, he shook his head, mouth set in a hard line, steely eyes unflinching as he told me. “I’m not going anywhere.” I shivered and instinctively took a step backward. “I’ve waited long enough.”
I blinked stupidly and tried to follow where he was going. My senses were all scrambled from being this close to him after such a long time. “Waited long enough for what?” I sounded as confused as I felt.
His eyes sharpened and narrowed. His mouth quirked into something that may have been a grin on a less-imposing man. The scarred eyebrow danced upward as he took a step toward me, his intent shining bright and clear in his eyes. “For you. I’ve waited long enough for you, Karsen.”

 What I thought about Respect

Jay Crownover does it again with Respect, the story of Noah Booker and Karsen Carter, both residents of The Point, a fictional town that is just as bad as the bad boys that live there. And when I say, bad, I truly mean bad. There's no messing around with "bad" boys that turn out to be really "good" boys with this series -- they all have a multitude of sins, but it doesn't stop them from trying to be good.

Karsen has been in love with Booker forever, and when he destroys her at a young age, she leaves The Point to try to forget him. But that's impossible for both parties, and so they end up together in a race to stay together ... and stay alive.

I really loved all of the stories from The Point, and Respect just did an excellent job of capping this series. There's suspense and action and most of all romance between two people who are so wrong and yet so right for each other.

While you could probably read this standalone, I recommend reading the series in order.

EXCERPT:
~Karsen~
I had no plans to leave the Point. It was ugly, mean, hard, and unforgiving, but these streets were home and I couldn’t imagine being happy anywhere else. This place had long since made my hands and the edges of my soul dirty. It was something I would be hard-pressed to hide should I go anywhere else. I’d have to spend my days trying to camouflage the filth I was so familiar with. Here, no one looked twice at the pretty teenager with shadows in her eyes and blood on her hands. I was one of many.
I wasn’t interested in leaving behind my sister or her fiancé, Race. We were an odd, dysfunctional family, but we made it work.
I didn’t want to be too far away from my mother, who was living in a group home as she slowly, painfully tried to recover from her alcoholism and PTSD from an accident she caused that ended up taking the life of a young mother and her child.
But more than anything, I absolutely didn’t want to leave him.
I couldn’t imagine a day going by without catching a glimpse of Noah Booker. I mean, he was impossible to miss. Six-and-a-half-feet tall, body built like a professional athlete, dark and brooding with the prettiest gunmetal-gray eyes, he was the entirety of every one of my teenage fantasies. I barely noticed the jagged scar dividing one side of his face. White and raised, it cut one of his black eyebrows in half, slashed over a high cheekbone, and ended somewhere under the chiseled edge of his hard jaw. He never talked about it, but Race, Booker’s boss, let it slip that Booker got the scar when he was locked up. Or maybe it wasn’t as much of a slip-up as a thinly veiled warning. Race never kept it much of a secret that my infatuation with his massive, dangerous, ex-con enforcer made him extremely uncomfortable. He’d warned me over and over again that Booker wasn’t for me. And he’d made it clear to the man who broke knees and smashed heads for a living that he was to stay as far away from me as possible.
They called it puppy love. It wasn’t.
To me, it was a vicious kind of love, filled with teeth and claws that I could feel digging at my insides every single time someone patted me on the head and told me how young I was, how much life I had yet to live. This love was rabid, and I was tired of having it on a leash. I wanted to let it free, wanted to let it sink its razor-sharp fangs into the man who had awoken the primal need inside of me. It was only fair he felt the same kind of crushing bite and painful pressure around his heart that I did every single day.
I was solely focused on getting to Booker. It barely registered I was done with high school and had new doors opening all around me. I couldn’t care less about getting my hands on my diploma. A piece of paper with Karsen Carter written on it in pretty calligraphy meant exactly nothing to me. The only thing I was focused on was the fact I was finally old enough to make my own choices. And I’d always picked Booker. Over and over again he was my number one priority.

5 Star Review and Excerpt: The Chase (Briar U #1) by Elle Kennedy

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.

And that his best friend has a crush on me.

And that I just moved in with them.

Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

“Dance with me?”
I want to say no.
But I also want to say yes.
I call this the Summer Dilemma—the frustrating, polar reactions this green-eyed, golden-haired goddess sparks in me.
Fuck yes and hell no.
Get naked with her. Run far, far away from her.
“Thanks, but I don’t like to dance.” I’m not lying. Dancing’s the worst.
Besides, when it comes to Summer Di Laurentis, my flight instinct always wins out.
“You’re no fun, Fitzy.” She makes a tsking noise, drawing my gaze to her lips. Full, pink, and glossy, with a tiny mole above the left side of her mouth.
It’s an extremely hot mouth.
Hell, everything about Summer is hot. She’s hands down the best-looking girl in the bar, and every dude in our vicinity is either staring enviously or glowering at me for being with her.
Not that I’m with her. We’re not together. I’m just standing next to her, with two feet of space between us. Which Summer keeps trying to bridge by leaning closer to me.
In her defense, she practically has to scream in my ear for me to hear her over the electronic dance music blasting through the room. I hate EDM, and I don’t like these kinds of bars, the ones with a dance floor and deafening music. Why the subterfuge? Just call your establishment a nightclub, if that’s what you want it to be. The owner of Gunner’s Pub should’ve called this place Gunner’s Club. Then I could’ve turned right around when I saw the sign and spared myself the shattered eardrums.
Not for the first time tonight, I curse my friends for dragging me to Brooklyn for New Year’s Eve. I’d way rather be at home, drinking a beer or two and watching the ball drop on TV. I’m low-key like that.
“You know, they warned me you were a curmudgeon, but I didn’t believe it until now.”
“Who’s they?” I ask suspiciously. “And hey, wait. I’m not a curmudgeon.”
“Hmmm, you’re right—the term is kind of dated. Let’s go with Groucho.”
“Let’s not.”
“No-Fun Police? Is that better?” Her expression is pure innocence. “Seriously, Fitz, what do you have against fun?”
An unwitting smile breaks free. “Got nothing against fun.”
“All right. Then what do you have against me?” she challenges. “Because every time I try talking to you, you run away.”
My smile fades. I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s calling me out in public. We’ve had a whopping total of two encounters, but that’s plenty of time for me to know she’s the type who thrives on drama.
I hate drama.
“Got nothing against you, either.” With a shrug, I ease away from the bar, prepared to do what she’s just accused me of—run.
A frustrated gleam fills her eyes. They’re big and green, the same shade as her older brother Dean’s eyes. And Dean’s the reason I force myself to stay put. He’s a good friend of mine. I can’t be a jackass to his sister, both out of respect for him, and for fear of my well-being. I’ve been on the ice when Dean’s gloves come off. He’s got a mean right hook.
“I mean it,” I say roughly. “I have nothing against you. We’re cool.”
“What? I didn’t hear the last part,” she says over the music.
I dip my mouth toward her ear, and I’m surprised that I barely have to bend my neck. She’s taller than the average chick, five-nine or ten, and since I’m six-two and used to towering over women, I find this refreshing.
“I said we’re cool,” I repeat, but I misjudged the distance between my lips and Summer’s ear. The two collide, and I feel a shiver run up her frame.
I shiver too, because my mouth is way too close to hers. She smells like heaven, some fascinating combo of flowers and jasmine and vanilla and—sandalwood, maybe? A man could get high on that fragrance. And don’t get me started on her dress. White, strapless, short. So short it barely grazes her lower thighs.
God fucking help me.

What I thought about The Chase
In this eagerly awaited spinoff from the Off Campus serie from Elle Kennedy, Dean's little sister Summer finally gets to scratch the itch she's had for Colin "Fitzy" Fitzgerald.
Having transferred to Briar U under somewhat questionable circumstances,  Summer finds herself without a place to stay until her brother Dean puts in a word for her and she ends up renting a room off campus with members of the hockey team, including Fitzy.  They've been dancing around each other for a while, and their incredible physical attraction for each other will not be denied, even it is at the expense of one of Fitzy's teammates.
Both Summer and Fitzy have some personal issues they need to work out themselves before they can really be a couple and at first glance, it looks like they might not have anything in common.  Summer is always in the limelight and Fitzy runs from it, but what he can't run from is Summer and vice versa.
I adored Summer.  She's friendly, loyal, and will gladly run into situations to stick up for what she believes is right.  I loved the story with her visiting professor and the backbone she exhibits throughout.  As for Fitzy, it was a joy to see him embrace his feelings and change somewhat from Summer's influence.  The fact that it took a while for these two to end up on the same page as far of their relationship was a terrific part of this story.
I love a book that grabs me in the first pages and keeps a hold on me until I hit "The End". It made me want to go back and re-read the Off-Campus series while I'm waiting for the next book in the Briar U series.
Really enjoyed the characters and the story here. The Chase captures a lot about what is great and not-so-great about college, and that was terrific.
