Release Day Review: There Should Have Been Eight by Nalini Singh

In this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh, a remote estate in New Zealand’s Southern Alps hosts a reunion no one will ever forget.

Seven friends.
One last weekend.
A mansion half in ruins.
No room for lies.
Someone is going to confess.
Because there should have been eight. . . .

They met when they were teenagers. Now they’re adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to others—none more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago.

They’ve gathered to reminisce at Bea’s family’s estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and they’re snowed in at the edge of eternity, there’s nowhere left to hide from their shared history.

As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage. Underneath it all, there’s the nagging feeling that Bea’s shocking death wasn’t what it was claimed to be. And before the weekend is through, the truth will be unleashed—no matter the cost. . . .

What I thought about There Should Have Been Eight
In this psychological thriller, childhood friends convene for a reunion that turns out to be a whole lot more.  I've read quite a few of these "locked-room-mysteries" this year and this one does not disappoint.
The story centers around Luna, one of the group who happens to have a medical situation that she's struggling with. She hasn't told her friends about it at all. And she's going to be critical to figuring out just what is going on at that remote mansion where the reunion takes place.
I really liked the pace of this story.  The story gradually reveals not only what's going on in the present, but what happened years ago to one of their friends.  There are the usual twists and turns as the story is revealed, and I didn't see all of them coming at me.
As is usually the case, there's plenty of diversity and locations that I'm not familiar with and that is a definite plus.  I thought this thriller was an entertaining read.

What I thought about Archangel's Resurrection

So this is the 15th book in this series.  It probably wasn't the smartest thing to jump into it at this point, but I adore this author's contemporary writing, and thought this might give me a taste of her well-known and loved paranormal series. Getting involved in a long fantasy series is an investment of time, so I wanted to check it out before I was all-in.

This series deals with powerful archangels.  This story tells the tale of Alexander and Zanaya, who are passionate, powerful, and incendiary in their love for each other.  There's plenty of background to cover as they've been in love for years and years. This did make the story move a bit slow at times.

As with all good romances, there are plenty of hurdles for the lovers to jump over.  There's serious stuff going on there, but I just had to go with the flow since I have not read any of the other books in this series so there were details that I most likely missed. I was intrigued with the story because the writing that I love in the contemporary works came through very well here.

Overall, I liked the romance and the trials the main characters faced.  I wished I knew some more about this world, but I was able to follow along. There is a very interesting story arc I could see moving to closure in this installment.  So if you are looking for a new fantasy series, this one might interest you.

What I thought about Quiet in Her Bones

I absolutely adore Nalini Singh's contemporary writings and was very excited to read this psychological suspense thriller.  The blurb gives a good overview of main aspects of the story so I'm not going to get into the plot so I don't spoil it for anyone.

The story is set in New Zealand which makes this so very interesting from a US reader perspective. I love how I feel transported to a new location when I read Ms. Singh's work. This is a world so unlike the one I live in, especially the diverse aspects of the characters and region in the story. It's like looking into new world and kept me hooked throughout the story.

As a suspense thriller, the story works very well.  There's just enough information shared so that the reader is kept guessing about the details of the story and what is really happening.  Add a questionable unreliable narrator and that just ups the ante when it comes to building suspense and tension.

I thought the pacing was for the most part good for me as I've come to expect some slower spots to catch a breath in this type of novel. The mystery was expertly crafted and left me guessing.  The ending was quite exciting and left me feeling satisfied.

Overall, if you are looking for an interesting adventure along with a nicely crafted mystery, you might like Quiet in Her Bones.

Review: Love Hard (Hard Play #3) by Nalini Singh

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh brings you the next sizzling story in her Hard Play contemporary romance series…

Jacob Esera, star rugby player and young single father, has worked hard to create a joyous life for his six-year-old daughter. After the death of his childhood sweetheart soon after their daughter’s birth, all Jake wants is safety and stability. No risks. No wild chances. And especially no Juliet Nelisi, former classmate, scandal magnet, and a woman who is a thorn in his side.

As a lonely teenager, Juliet embraced her bad-girl reputation as a shield against loneliness and rejection. Years later, having kicked a cheating sports-star ex to the curb, she has a prestigious job and loyal friends—and wants nothing to do with sportsmen. The last thing she expects is the fire that ignites between her and the stuffed-shirt golden boy who once loved her best friend.

Straitlaced Jacob Esera versus wild-at-heart Juliet Nelisi? Place your bets.

What I thought about Love Hard

I'm always so excited to see another story in this contemporary romance series. I got hooked on Nalini Singh when I read the Rock Kiss series and I'm always on the lookout for more.

Jake Esera has 2 priorities -- his family and his rugby. He's a single father, lost his sweetheart in a tragic manner and he's committed to providing the best he can for his daughter. That means keeping her out of the media spotlight created by his outstanding rugby career. When he reconnects with Juliet, a close friend to his high school sweetheart, he's attracted to her, but past history makes it difficult for Jacob to act on his desires.

Juliet may have been a wild child in high school, but she's grown up a lot since then. One thing for sure is that she doesn't want her tarnished reputation to cause any damage to the Esera family.

I loved the slow rebuilding of relationships in this story and the gentle progression to a real romance between Jake and Juliet. There isn't a huge amount of conflict here -- most of it deals with Juliet and her ex. I absolutely love Jake in this story. He's the strong silent type, with a heart of gold and when he turns his protective ways on Juliet, she finds something she's wanted in her life. I liked the simplicity of this story as it puts the spotlight right on the romance of Jake and Juliet. Jake's daughter couldn't be any cuter!

I definitely recommend this series, and the Rock Kiss series. The stories are original and have a quiet, heart-touching romantic element that I adore. Love Hard definitely worked for me.

Review: Rebel Hard (Hard Play #2) by Nalini Singh

Book 2: the Hard Play series

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh continues her Hard Play series with a sweet, sexy romance featuring big, fat, OTT weddings, a meddling grandma, and a too-serious hero who needs to be unbuttoned…

Nayna Sharma agreed to an arranged marriage in the hope it would heal the fractures in her beloved family… only to realize too late that a traditional marriage is her personal nightmare. Panicked, she throws caution to the winds, puts on the tiniest dress she can find, and ends up in the arms of a tall, rough-edged hunk of a man who has abs of steel—and who she manages to mortally insult between one kiss and the next.

Abandoned as a child, then adopted into a loving family, Raj Sen believes in tradition, in continuity. Some might call him stiff and old-fashioned, but he knows what he wants—and it’s a life defined by rules… yet he can’t stop thinking about the infuriating and sexy woman who kissed him in the moonlight then disappeared. When his parents spring an introduction on him, the last woman he expects is her. Beautiful. Maddening. A rulebreaker in the making.

He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.

What I thought about Rebel Hard

Nayna is in the process of interviewing prospected grooms for an arranged marriage when she decides to go out and get a little wild. At the party she meets a gorgeous man who sets everything about her on fire. He's exactly what she's looking for as a fling before she's put in the marriage cage. The heat level between them is enormous but things don't exactly work out quite the way Nayna wants them to.

Enter Raj. Raj is an amazing man. He's traditional, alpha as heck and he cares about Nayna enough to listen to her. He also has a sensitive side he only shows to Nayna. I really liked him. He too straddles between tradition and love.  His heart is delicate, and he has reason to guard it, yet he knows he wants Nayna and is willing to risk his heart for her. It doesn't get more swoony than that.  I really loved getting both perspectives in this story.
Nayna challenges the notion that she's only valuable as a wife and wants to develop her own self before she makes the decision to marry.  Some of it is caused by fear of being caught in a loveless relationship. She's seen people change and fall out of love. She wants to be something herself, before she commits to another and she needs a man who understands that.

Felt like I was transported to a world I knew nothing about, and yet everything seemed so familiar.  Aukland is not a setting I see often in my reading, nor is arranged marriage.  It was all so very interesting and I adored how tradition was explored in this story.  I loved everything thing about Rebel Hard.  There is so much more to this story than just a set of abs on the cover. I don't think the cover does this book justice.

My favorite character, besides Nayna and Raj is most definitely Nayna's wise and wonderful grandmother who manages to sum up life in one meaningful sentence... "Love grows when it's tended."  There are so many jewels in this story, and Aji is one of them.

Definitely on my favorites of 2018 list...
