Release Week Review: Consort of Fire (Bound to Fire and Steel #1) by Kit Rocha

Once Upon a Time…

For three thousand years, an ancient dragon god has protected the borders of the Sheltered Lands. In return he makes only one demand: every one hundred years, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as his consort… for as long as they can survive.

Sachielle of House Roquebarre is the thirty-first consort to be sacrificed to the monster who guards the mountain passes. She is young, beautiful–and she has three secrets.

First: she’s a disposable orphan trained in seduction.

Second: her assassin-trained handmaid, Zanya, is the only person she has ever loved.

Third—and most dangerous: she’s cursed. Sachi and Zanya have five weeks to murder the Dragon in his bed. If they fail, the mortal king’s curse will steal not just Sachi’s life, but her very soul.

The Dragon has only one secret: he is nothing like what they have been told. And he will do whatever it takes to possess them both.

What I thought about Consort of Fire

I'm a big fan of the Beyond series from this author duo, and so when I saw this, I wanted to check it out. In Consort of Fire, Kit Rocha has created a world in the year 2999 full of dragons and rulers and rules.

Sachi is promised to one of the dragon rulers but she has her own agenda with her handmaid and her best friend and woman she loves called Zanya.  They are out to kill the dragon but first Sachi must pretend she is a willing consort in order to lure him in.

Ash, the dragon is an interesting character. He's intrigued by Sachi and Zanya and has his own agenda.  There's plenty of erotic content here, which if you've read this author before, you know they can deliver with some super steamy scenes and they do not disappoint in Consort of Fire.  Loved it!

I did have a bit of a problem with the language -- the chapters start with a date, reminding the reader it's the year 2999, but the language seems very "old english" to this reader and it threw me off every single time.  I also found some of the early chapters verbose in descriptions that also kept me from sinking into the story.  This all got better as I kept reader, but it was something I notices and it took me out of the story at times.

Overall, a great start to what looks like a terrific erotic romance / fantasy series.

ARC Review: Deal with the Devil (Mercenary Librarians #1) by Kit Rocha

Deal With the Devil
Mercenary Librarians, Book One

The United States went belly up 45 years ago when our power grid was wiped out. Too few live in well-protected isolation while the rest of us scrape by on the margins.

The only thing that matters is survival.
By any means. At any cost.

Nina is an information broker with a mission: to bring hope to the darkest corners of Atlanta. She and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to help those in need. But altruism doesn’t pay the bills—raiding vaults and collecting sensitive data is where the real money is.

Knox is a bitter, battle-weary supersoldier who leads the Silver Devils, an elite strike squad that chose to go AWOL rather than slaughter innocents. Before the Devils leave town for good, they need a biochem hacker to stabilize the experimental implants that grant their superhuman abilities.

The problem? Their hacker’s been kidnapped. And the ransom for her return is Nina. Knox has the perfect bait for a perfect trap: a lost Library of Congress server. The data could set Nina and her team up for years…

If they live that long.

Deal with the Devil is the first in a new series. It takes place completely independently from our previous series with no character overlap. It’s also our first traditionally published book. While we’re working with Tor, a publisher famed for their science fiction novels, the Mercenary Librarians series is still very much a romance series, with a new couple and a guaranteed HEA with each book.

What I thought about Deal with the Devil

In this first book in a new series from the writing team of Kit Rocha, the reader is introduced to a world that they might recognize from the Beyond series by this author team.   Set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world similar (but not exactly the same)  to that of the Beyond series,  Deal with the Devil takes off with a super exciting scene setting up the two main characters for this book.

Nina is what is called an information broker in a world shattered by the flares. I love the premise for this series and how these "mercenery librarians" use information as their weapon to help those damaged by the flares that caused the collapse of their society. Nina is their idealistic leader and works hard to take care of everyone in her circle.

Knox is immediately intrigued with Nina and that's a huge driving force for him. A special forces soldier with a team of his own called the Silver Devils, he has his own agenda when dealing with Nina.

Overall, I thought this was a good start to the series.  I loved the action of the book, but the characters were harder to get invested in. I did find it hard to connect to most of the characters and found the writing style not as "easy" as that of the Beyond series. There was a lot to take in, but that was expected with a first book in a dystopian, futuristic romance. It did leave me wanting more.

Review: Ivan (Gideon's Riders #3) by Kit Rocha

As the sheltered princess of Sector One, Maricela’s life is defined by duty: to her people and to her family. Her wealth and influence have allowed her to build a better world, but they come with a price—the responsibility to secure political stability with a practical marriage. Maricela cherishes the idea of marrying for love, but there’s not much romance in the endless line of suitors interested only in prestige and power.

And her handsome, brooding new bodyguard isn’t helping the situation.

Ivan is the perfect, deadly warrior, a man trained from childhood to be the ultimate protector to the Rios family. His focus on keeping her safe is intense–and a little intoxicating. When the threat of danger cracks his icy control,

Maricela realizes she’s not the only one fighting against temptation.

Ivan knows that the blood on his hands makes him unworthy of the pure-hearted princess. But from the first kiss, their forbidden affair feels inevitable. He can give her a glimpse of life outside her gilded cage and a lover who wants the woman instead of the crown. The only thing he can never do is promise her forever.

Because spurning her noble suitors to marry her bodyguard wouldn’t just be a scandal. It could set off a political firestorm that would tear Sector One apart.

What I thought about Ivan

Ivan is the third book in the Gideon's Riders series, a spin-off from the Beyond series.  I really liked the first two books in this new series -- it's in the same world, but the stories tend to be a little more romantic.  But the basic premise is the same for both series -- strong women and their strong men.

Ivan is a warrior, trained to protect the Rios family and that includes Maricela, the princess of Sector One. Yeah, there's a lot of expectations for both of them.  He doesn't feel worthy of her because of his past, but he's tasked to keep her safe, the slow burn between them heats up. Complicating things is the fact that there's an active search for a appropriate spouse for Maricela.

As expected, the heat between them cannot be ignored and may have some political consequences due to their different roles in Sector One.  I did like that their relationship had a strong foundation of friendship and respect, and it was obvious that Maricela had some really strong feelings for Ivan.

This book exposes a lot of the secrets of Sector One and is steeped in politics. One of my growing complaints with this series is the number of characters and keeping everyone relationships straight. It sometimes has an impact on how invested I can get in the main characters when there's so much going on.

There's more focus on the female characters in Ivan, and I liked that about it.  Female empowerment has always been a theme in this world, and I find that is the number one aspect I enjoy about this and the Beyond series.  There's plenty of foreshadowing of upcoming events too.

Overall another satisfying (and steamy) installment in this world created by Kit Rocha.

ARC Review:Beyond Forever (O'Kane for Life #2) by Kit Rocha

Before they were the King and Queen…

Six years before the Beyond series started, an ambitious bootlegger named Dallas O’Kane caught a very pretty thief named Lex with her hand in his safe.

The rest is very sexy history.

In Beyond Forever, follow Dallas and Lex through the turning points in their relationship, from the night he caught her trying to rob him, through his rise to successful bootlegger, to legend, to Sector Leader–with Lex always there, willing to give him the push he needs.

Beyond Forever is a prequel novella that jumps through time to tell the story of the biggest moments in the formation of the O’Kanes and their King and Queen. It will be far more enjoyable if you’ve already read Beyond Control, and contains spoilers for the entire Beyond series.

What I thought about Beyond Forever

Let me start out by saying this is a fantastic addition to this series.
I've always had a hard time understanding Lex -- sometimes I got her and sometimes I didn't and Beyond Forever helped me see a different side of her. I got her.
Beyond Forever is the story of the beginnings of the O'Kane legend, if you will, and the early days of Dallas and Lex.  I loved every minute of this story, especially the glimpses of the early days... and well, you should read it instead of me telling you about it because it's terrific.
I love that these authors have found a way to give us more of the characters I fell in love way back when I first found this world.
Definitely recommended.

Review:Deacon (Gideon's Riders #2) by Kit Rocha

On Sale August 29th, 2017
AmazonAppleKoboBarnes & Noble

Ana has trained most of her life to achieve one goal: to prove that anything men can do, she can do better. Now she’s Sector One’s first female Rider, and being the best is the only way to ensure she won’t be its last. Distractions aren’t allowed–especially not her painful attraction to the reserved but demanding leader whose stern, grumpy demeanor has already gotten into her head.

Deacon has spent the last twenty years trying to atone for his past, but the blood he spilled as a mercenary and assassin will never wash away entirely. If his Riders knew the extent of his sins, he’d lose their trust and respect. It’s easier to keep them all at arm’s length, especially Ana. But his newest recruit’s stubbornness is starting to crack his defenses.

And their sparring matches are driving him wild.

The passion sparking between them can’t be denied, but neither can the vengeance barreling toward Deacon. When his old squad comes back to punish him for his betrayal, Ana and the Riders are squarely in the line of fire. The only way to save his people may be to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But first, he has to convince Ana not to follow him straight into hell.

What I thought about Deacon

Deacon is the second book in the Gideon's Riders series based in the same world as the popular Beyond series by the same author, in a time period after the war that liberated the sectors from Eden.  There's still plenty of action to be had and lots of problems still brewing in the sectors.

Deacon is one of Gideon's riders, holy roller bikers patrolling the sectors, taking down the trouble makers and bullies.  He's a trainer of sorts for the other riders and has a past he'd sooner forget, but the folks he used to work with aren't going to let him do that.

Ana is the first female rider.  Let me say that again. The first female rider. As the first, she's got a lot on her shoulders.  Not only does she have to prove that she's worthy -- she has to pave the way for other females to have the opportunity.  That's a heavy load that she happens to carry very well. The only thing in her way is Deacon and the feelings she has for him. Loving him will only make both of them look weak, so she holds back her feelings until she can't do it anymore.

There's plenty of action in this book, but I have to say I really do like the more romantic feel of this series.  It's all about the HEA, and Ana and Deacon's path to happiness is full of detours and roadblocks, but eventually they get there.

I really do like this series.  Kit Rocha knows how to write great action sequences which I love, and then there's the steamy scenes between the main characters that always entertain.

A great addition to this series, especially Ana's contributions to Gideon's Riders and her reconciliation with her feelings for Deacon and being strong enough to be one of the Gideon's Riders.  Loved that part the most.

Lieutenant Ashwin Malhotra is a Makhai soldier—genetically engineered to be cold, ruthless. Unfeeling. His commanding officers consider him the perfect operative, and they’re right. He’s never failed to execute an objective, but there’s one thing he didn’t anticipate—running into Dr. Kora Bellamy, the only woman to ever break through his icy exterior.

Excerpt from Ashwin by Kit Rocha

Ashwin took his time sliding his hand up her back and under the wild tumble of her hair. Brushing her skin with his fingertips sent warning shocks of pain skittering up his spine. Once, during the war, he’d forced a fellow Makhai soldier to inject the torturous drugs meant for aversion therapy into his veins. It had been a last-ditch effort, a desperate attempt to dislodge her from his brain.
It hadn’t worked. Oh, he associated Kora with pain. He associated pain with Kora. But the line between pain and pleasure was dangerously thin. As he curled his fingers around the back of her neck, the heat crawling up his spine melted across that line. Obliterated it.
“Close your eyes,” he ordered softly.
Her hand clenched in his shirt.
He couldn’t tell her it would be okay, and he wouldn’t urge her to trust him. There was only one thing he had to offer her. “You need something right now, Kora, and I know how to provide it. But I won’t do anything you don’t want me to do. It’s your choice.”
She sat up straight, her brows drawn into a confused frown. But slowly, slowly, she closed her eyes.
He’d never had the luxury of simply studying her face before. He traced his gaze over the arch of her brows, down the thin bridge of her nose to the place where the tip turned up just a few millimeters. Down farther, to the full curve of her slightly parted lips, and beneath that to the delicate point of her chin.
He’d never noticed her freckles before. There were just a few scattered across her cheeks. He touched one, and she inhaled, sharp and shaky. Then she sank her teeth into her lower lip and tilted her face to his touch.
Such naked need. All the signs of arousal were there—flushed skin, tight nipples. Shortened breath. The openness of it was a soothing change from the way people hid their emotions behind false smiles and frowns.
All he had to do was touch her, and her body spilled her secrets. When he stroked her, she trembled against him. When his knuckle grazed the spot where her throat met her jaw, goose bumps rose on her arms. He took note of her reaction, factoring it in to his overall strategy.
The first time he bit her, it would be there.
Her flimsy top left her shoulders bare. He touched her there next, dragging his fingers down her smooth, unmarked skin. He noted the ticklish spot inside her elbow, and the way her breathing hitched when he brushed a thumb over the inside of her wrist.
There. That was where he’d start.
Without taking his gaze from her face, he lifted her hand and parted his lips. He knew, rationally, that her skin couldn’t taste sweet. It had to be his pleasure at the way her eyes flew open, then half-closed with heavy desire when he licked her.
He kissed her palm. The tips of her fingers. Slow, careful. Precise. Her inner arm. Her shoulder. The delicate line of her collarbone. The hollow at her throat.
He lulled her with soft touches until she was clutching at his shoulders, her breath quickening as she pulled him closer. Her hip rubbed against his cock when she squirmed, briefly diverting his attention to his own state of physical arousal.
It would be effortless to indulge himself. She’d go to his bed willingly. Eagerly. With an exhilarating lack of nerves and fear, because she wouldn’t be like his domestic handlers—bedding him at first out of duty, and then out of eagerness for the way he could make her body react.
Kora would want him.

What I thought about Ashwin

This spin-off series from Kit Rocha still takes place in the Beyond Series world, but it leaves Sector 4 and the O'Kanes behind and is now centered in Sector One where Gideon's Riders reside.

Gideon's Riders and those followers living in Sector One live by the religion formed years ago and the family ties that bind them all together.  Similar, but here it's religion that bind them together rather than the pursuit of pleasure.  It's all good because the world is still a mess post-war.

Ashwin Malhotra was introduced in the Beyond Series, as the bio-engineered military man in love with regen expert Kora Bellamy.  After six months of reprogramming his response to Kora, he's now on a secret mission in Sector One and back in close proximity to Kora.

Kora Belamy is practically family to the highest ranking group in Sector One and her heart still burns for Ashwin.  She knows what he is, that he isn't supposed to feel any emotions, but she can look in his eyes and see them.  She makes it her business to let Ashwin know just how she feels about him. He makes an attempt at keeping his distance, but Kora draws him in and when it comes to her, he's rewritten the rules pushed upon him by the military.

Ashwin does have a secret that will tear Kora's world open and leave their tenuous relationship in shreds.  But the folks in his new group and those from his past see just what is going on between them and not only do they look out for Kora, they are looking out for Ashwin too in their own way.

Ashwin has a different feel to it than the books in the Beyond Series.  In Sector One, it's all about Gideon Rios and his followers.  I liked the inclusion of some of the characters from Sector Four, and I liked learning more about the Rios family and their part in the Eden-Sectors world.  There's lots of interesting characters for future books and storylines in this new series.

You do not need to read the Beyond Series to follow along with what is going on in Ashwin.  The authors do a good job of giving enough background where it is needed. For me, it was all about Ashwin getting back to Kora and seeing if they could put their pasts behind them to find a new future.  You'll have to read this to see if they can do that!

Overall, a great start to a new series!

5 Stars for Beyond Surrender by Kit Rocha

She’s the heart of O’Kane liquor.

For years, Nessa has been focused on work. She keeps the whiskey—and the money—flowing, and life is sweet. Sure, she’s tired of being everyone’s baby sister, and she longs for a man who can stand up to her overprotective O’Kane brothers. But she never thought she’d meet him in the middle of a war.

He’s the brains of the revolution.

War is all Ryder knows. He was raised with one goal: to ensure the sectors’ successful rebellion against Eden. His father and his mentor both died for freedom, and nothing will stop him from securing their legacies with victory. He doesn’t have time for distractions—especially beautiful, impulsive ones like Nessa.

Opposites don’t just attract, they combust. Together, Nessa and Ryder have a chance for something more than the lives they’ve always known. But this is war—deadly, bloody war—and the only way to happily-ever-after is straight through Eden.

What I thought about Beyond Surrender

Back in 2012 when I reviewed Beyond Shame, I didn't even consider that I would be invested in this world for four years.  It's been a great ride, and I've enjoyed every single one of the books in this series. While the end of a series is sometimes bittersweet, Kit Rocha finishes with the fabulous story of Nessa and Ryder and the war between the sectors and Eden.

Nessa is the heart of the O'Kane's liquor making enterprise and it was wonderful to learn of her long relationship with Dallas. When she meets Ryder, she's instantly smitten, but very cautious about getting involved with him.  She knows war is coming and that it brings a special heartbreak of its own.

Ryder likes Nessa too, and I have to say I loved that even though the O'Kanes warn him against hurting their girl, he pursues her.  Their romance is probably one of the more traditional stories in the series, and I thought it was very sweet and romantic how they got together.

While their love story is a focal point of Beyond Surrender, so is the war with Eden. This war has been brewing for a number of books now, and it was great to have some closure!  I loved that characters old and new were part of the fighting and I held my breath as Sector Four took a beating in many different ways.  I have to admit I shed a tear or two as I read the final chapters of the story, because the gang does not come out of this unscathed. (and that's all I'm gonna say so I don't spoil it).

Overall, this was a terrific ending to a terrific series.  Recommended.

Review:Beyond Ecstasy by Kit Rocha

The O’Kanes have a reputation for working hard and playing harder—except for Hawk. He joined the gang with one goal: to ensure his family’s survival through the impending war with Eden. It’s been years since he had the luxury of wanting anything for himself. Now, he wants Jeni. From the first moment he saw her, he’s been obsessed with making her his. Not for a night—forever. Jeni’s been lusting after the former smuggler for months, but he keeps shutting her down. She’s almost given up on getting him in her bed when he offers her the last thing she ever expected—a collar. Accepting it means belonging to him, body and soul. It’s a reckless gamble, but Jeni can’t resist the chance to slip under Hawk’s armor.

The only thing more shocking than the dark, dangerous pleasure they discover is how right it feels. But falling in love is even more reckless when forever is far from guaranteed. Because they aren’t just at war, they’re out of time—and every breath could be their last.

What I thought about Beyond Ecstasy

I was so very excited to see this book's release!  In the last installment, the war between Eden and the sectors starts taking shape and the sectors are left waiting for Eden's next move.

There's plenty of tension happening here, with dead bodies on wire fences and Eden glowing like a debilitating lantern at night. Dallas and the gang don't know when Eden is going to attack and that has everyone on edge.

Thinking that Eden will cut off the food source to start, Dallas sends Hawk out to the farms, and Hawk and his mother and sisters have to face the fact that they might just have to leave their home in a hurry when Eden attacks.

With thoughts of war, come thoughts of not making it, and so Hawk takes a chance on the woman that he loves. Jeni cares about Hawk too, but is worried about the real reasons Hawk is offering a collar and more.

This book is really more about Hawk and Jeni and their love story rather than what is going on between the sectors and Eden, and that was okay with me.  I liked their love story, even though it's a familiar one.  We've seen Jeni's concerns before from some of the women in previous couples.  For me, Hawk was the attraction in this story. I found him to be very soulful and self-sacrificing and so in love with Jeni.  I loved that about him.

Being that this is the second to the last book in the series, I had hoped to see more of the whole sector four gang in this book and there were a few great scenes that I thought could have been expanded. A good book will leave me wanting more, and I did feel that at the end of Beyond Ecstasy

Kit Rocha does a great job with building the tension in this book, although at times I felt it fizzled out a little. There's a scene with Ace and Gia and Jeni when she returns from Eden that could have been pages longer in my humble opinion, just because the emotions were so wonderfully portrayed, I wanted more, more, more.

I loved Hawk and Jeni's story (although I thought their relationship issues were resolved a little too quickly) and I'm loving when the entire Sector is involved in the war story.  I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Overall, I enjoyed Beyond Ecstasy and it kept me reading until the very end. Another great addition to the series!
