Release Day Review: A Wicked and Beautiful Garden ( Witches of the Island #1) by Katie McGarry

Twenty-eight year-old Cassie Strega can’t escape fate.

All she wants is to live a normal, quiet life delivering the babies in her small town. But when she discovers she comes from a lineage of witches, her life becomes extraordinary—in the gravely dangerous type of way.

Then, she’s reunited with her first love.

Fighting the intense attraction of their former blood bond, Cassie and Orion work together to find the child. But when the heartbreak that nearly destroyed Cassie nine years before looms once more, she’ll have to decide whether getting involved in the supernatural war is worth losing everything, including her life.

Orion, the sultry Fae warrior who broke her heart years before, is searching for a baby. Not just any baby, but the queen of the Fae who will one day lead them in their final battle against the demons determined to rule the world. The same baby who has been calling to Cassie for help in her dreams.

What I thought about A Wicked and Beautiful Garden

In this new release, Katie McGarry goes full-on adult paranormal romance with emphasis on the fantasy elements. She's been flirting with the paranormal in a few prior releases, so it's great to see her devote an entire series to this genre. I was so excited to read this and I really enjoyed this start to the series.

Cassie Strega just wants to live a quiet life in her little town until her ex-boyfriend Orion shows up. It's not easy facing her first love after thinking he was dead for all those years. Not to mention, she learns of her own paranormal capabilities.

Orion needs Cassie's help finding the fae queen -- a newborn -- and a baby that Cassie hears in her dreams. Cassie is torn between helping the fae warrior who betrayed her, and helping the baby which means dealing with the world of the fae. Hello rock and hard place.

As Cassie and Orion struggle with finding the fae queen and work through their second-chance at love, other forces are brewing in their world.  Demons work against the Fae who are trying to save the world and their future and Cassie has a role to play in all of this. As with a series like this, there is a lot of world building and information in this first book, but the story grabbed me from the first pages and moves along with a nice pace.  I'm looking forward to reading more about this world and several intriguing supporting characters are introduced near the end of the book.

The rocky second chance romance between Cassie and Orion is tested throughout the story.  There's much talk of love and devotion, and the author could turn the heat level and emotional connection between these characters up a notch.  I did like the ending, even though readers will want to be aware this ends in a cliffhanger.

So overall, a great start for this newly-released adult paranormal romance series. Can't wait for more!
