2 More Reviews from Moo U: Halftime by Kim Findlay and Darkroom by Kate Willoughby

Halftime by Kim Findlay

Release Date: April 26, 2021

There’s no halftime in hockey, but maybe there’s one in love…

Drunk dialing your girlfriend to tell her that you didn’t really cheat is a bad idea--a lesson Seb Hunter learned the hard way. It was no surprise when she cut him completely out of her life. Now he’s finally moved on, and he’s looking forward to sophomore year at Moo U. Until his ex arrives on campus.

For goalie Faith Devereaux, cheating is a hard pass. She grew up knowing all too well how destructive infidelity can be. She’s gotten over Seb and picked the college of her dreams. The fact that he’s a student there will not be a problem. Hockey is her priority. Not guys, not dating, definitely not exes.

But when an exhibition game forces them into close proximity, it isn’t long before their old attraction flares. Regaining trust is hard, though, when the heart plays a good defensive game.

But when the goal is love, one more shot might be all they need.

 What I thought about Halftime

When Sebastien Hunter left to attend Moo U, he knew there was one thing his girlfriend Faith Deveraux would not tolerate and that was cheating. There's a brutal breakup and Seb is forced to move on, even though there's unfinished business between him and Faith.

Imagine his surprise to find her practicing with the Moo U womens hockey team. With the help of his friend Cooper, Seb and Faith find their way to a second chance amid dealing with issues related to trust and cheating and past history. I did like that part of what they were going through very much in this second chance romance.

I did feel that Seb and Faith were often times poor communicators with each other and while I liked them, I also thought they often acted impulsively to their own relationship detriment. But most of all, I thought Cooper was borderline creepy with his insistence on butting into their relationship. I was waiting for him to make a play for Faith, tbh. Something just didn't ring true to me with Cooper's heavy involvement in being the go-between.

So this was just okay for me. I liked the examination of trust in a second-chance relationship, and the disparity between support for women's sports versus men's sports, but there were some other elements of the story that weren't for me.

Darkroom by Kate Willoughby

Release Date: April 26, 2021

Indi

I'm not gonna lie, being a twenty-one-year-old virgin is ridiculously embarrassing, bordering on pitiful. And if there’s anything I hate, it’s being pitied. So I’m getting my V-card punched this semester. It’s time to stop dreaming about being swept off my feet. Instead, I’m planning a down-and-dirty one-nighter with a certain hot hockey player I’ve been eyeing.

Hudson

As a top draft pick from a family of hockey royalty, I'm under so much pressure that I’m losing my edge on the ice. I need something to snap my brain out of this self-destructive stress-loop. Like a hot night of fun. That’s where Indi Briscoe from my photography class comes in. She’s flirtatious and funny one moment, sweetly shy the next. But then she wants me to pop her cherry.

Jesus.  Did I mention the pressure thing? Am I crazy for starting something with her? Or would I be a fool for saying no?

Warning: this standalone novel contains heat, heart, familial expectations, extreme milkshakes, and a hamster with deep thoughts.

What I thought about Darkroom

Indi Briscoe has always been ultra sensitive to the port wine birthmark on her face. Not many people know about it because she's an expert at using make to cover it. But one night she ventures out without it and literally runs into Hudson Forte, gorgeous hockey star.

When they end up working on a class project together, the time is well spent building their friendship and more. Indi can hardly believe it, but then she remembers that there is something she's not telling him. Turns out Indi's birthmark doesn't make a difference in his feelings toward Indi.

Hudson is feeling tons of pressure from all sides regarding his hockey career, and its not helping that his game just feels off. It gets to the point that he's worried about his level of play on the ice. When med-school-bound Indi suggests a serious medical condition might be causing his difficulties, he says some things in the most brutal way.

I liked these two together. There's a sweet "first-time" scene and a really cute prom scene that showed Hudson had a good heart. Indi had some things to work through as well related to her heritage and adoption and her birthmark. I adored how Hudson loved her in spite of his one slip while under an unbelievable amount of stress.

There were things I liked about this story (Hudson in case you haven't gotten that from my review yet) and some things I didn't like, such as a rushed ending. Overall, I would recommend this hockey romance, especially if you are looking for diversity and light drama. It works well as a romance, because ... well, Hudson. He really made the book for me.
