Review:5 Stars for Retreat (The Getaway Series #1) by Jay Crownover

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.

My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses.
It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.

These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

What I thought about Retreat

Wow!  How did I miss this book? I'm a huge fan of Jay Crownover's stories, but somehow I missed this book when it was released a year ago.  I'm so glad to have found it, because this book just pulled me out of a reading slump!

Leo (Leora) is getting over a very difficult breakup when her friend Emrys decides they need to go on a wilderness retreat in Wyoming.  Leo is skeptical, but agreeable and the two best friends hit the road to do some back woods horseback riding.  When they meet the Warner brothers, the owners of the ranch and tour company, Leo's life gets very interesting.

In steps Cyrus Warner, the older of the three brothers.  There's immediate sparks between Cyrus and Leo and not the romantic kind...at first. But the longer they spend on the trail, their spark turns into attraction and makes for some very steamy scenes between them. Oh, and there are other people on the trail with them, a family in trouble and two men who don't seem to quite fit in with everyone else.

Everything seems to be going well until a runaway horse takes Leo into an area that some criminals want to keep private, turning the story into a tense and tight romantic suspense as Cyrus and Leo work against the clock to keep their group and Cyrus's brothers from serious harm.

I loved this.  I could not put this down.  The story is told from Leo's perspective, and that it interesting because she had a lot to work through. The tension, sexual and otherwise, is tight and very engaging. As a fan of romantic suspense, this story did a nice job of balancing the romance and action.

I also thought Cyrus was yummy, and I'm looking forward to his brother's stories.  Not everything turns out "fine" and I liked that about Retreat.  There was no magic that made everything better -- the characters had to learn to live with the cards they were dealt and that made for a very satisfying conclusion to the story (nope, not gonna tell).

The end of the book sets things up quite nicely for Shelter, the next book in the series which is out on December 26, 2017.  I definitely recommend grabbing a copy of Retreat -- it's a very exciting and super steamy romantic suspense that puts Retreat on my favorites of 2017 list.
