5 stars for So Close (Tierney Bay #1) by Serena Bell

The inn is her life. He needs to tear it down.

Auburn Campbell loves Beachcrest Inn. Working there saved her sanity as a teenager and got her back on her feet after a controlling relationship. So when Trey Xavier shows up, threatening to demolish Beachcrest, she’s ready to fight. Nothing riles her up like a hot guy in an expensive suit on a power trip—in the worst and best ways.

Trey screwed up. And now he needs this land deal or he’ll lose his business. He built his company from scratch so he could take care of his family the way his dad never did. But it would be a lot easier for Trey to stand his ground if Auburn didn’t tempt him so badly. He hasn’t wanted anyone like this in a long time. Maybe ever.

After a few days of summer sun, Auburn and Trey are both losing their heads—and maybe their hearts, too. Except they’re both out of practice at losing.

Only one thing’s certain: The Fourth of July in Tierney Bay will have plenty of fireworks this year.

What I thought about So Close

In this new Tierney Bay series from Serena Bell, Auburn Campbell wants to save the Beachcrest Inn, a place that means a whole lot to her.  Standing in her way is Trey Xavier, a guy from the city who is threatening to take down the Inn for a major land development deal.  But Auburn needs to convince Trey that tearing down the Beachcrest Inn isn't the way to go.

Both characters have some past histories that color their world and they'll need to get through those feelings.  It's a frenemies to lovers story that brings a whole lot of emotion to the table.  Trey has a lot of layers and Auburn is going to have to get through them if she wants to save the Inn and potentially have a relationship with Trey. First she has to convince him that the Beachcrest Inn in the magical Tierney Bay is worth much more than just money.

There's a hot spark between these two characters that helps bring Auburn and Trey together, and things do move fast between them -- a first kiss changes everything. There's a lot of steam along with hurdles for them to jump if they are to be together.  It's a great start to the Tierney Bay series. Looking forward to more!

Arden Lennox’s charmed life may be in pieces, but she’d sooner get her hoohaw bleached than move back in with her parents. She’s no longer the prom-queen princess married to the football star. She’s a broke, penniless widow, and it’s time she stood on her own two feet.

An under-construction unit in a quaint Chicago brownstone is cheap (free), but it comes with an unexpected surprise. Tyler Ramirez, her brother’s gawky high school best friend, is now a smoking hot firefighter who spends most of his spare time in her unit hammering, drilling, and screwing. Usually with his shirt off—a temptation she has no intention of indulging.

Tyler can’t believe his high school crush is living right across the hall, or how fast his fierce lust for her comes blazing back. She’s still gorgeous—a little sadder, a little quieter, but still with the amazing smile and sweet body that fueled his awkward teenage fantasies.

Despite her best intentions, Arden can’t resist grown up Tyler but the sparks between them send her into full retreat. And by the time she realizes the heat between them could last a lifetime, it could be too late to tell him…

Excerpt:

“Well?” he asked.

She grinned. “That was possibly the most thrilling ride of my life.”

He pulled off her helmet, the look in his eyes saying that he knew he could give her an even more thrilling ride.

She had no doubt. But she hadn’t managed to raise her siblings and get them all a relatively decent life by following a whim, sexy as that whim might be. She’d been afraid of commitment with Ry because … well, she still wasn’t one hundred percent sure. But she thought it had something to do with the knowledge that committing to him would mean becoming something she wasn’t – a person capable of further dividing her heart, handing another chunk of it off to someone, and in turn giving them power to hurt her.

But looking into Cam’s gaze, she couldn’t see him ever trying to make her into something she wasn’t. Life with him would only get better.

But they weren’t going to go there. And if that caused a little teeny tiny spark of sadness, she shoved it aside. This wasn’t the time to dwell. She needed to live in the moment. And that needed to go into her journal. She had it in her purse in the truck. “Do you have the keys?”

“Sure. What do you need, I’ll get it for you.”

Okay, so she could admit her crazy here, or she could keep it to herself. But maybe to prove that this wouldn’t – couldn’t -- last, she gave him the truth. “I need to write something in my journal.”

“Okay,” he said without blinking an eye and turned toward the stairs to get to the parking lot.

Just the fact that he’d do it made it okay to stop him. “I can wait.’ Then she stepped into him and pressed her face in the crook of his neck to just breathe him in for a moment, willing herself to remember. Live in the moment. There was no sense in thinking about the future, because as she knew all too well, not everyone got one. So there was no use in spoiling the here and now by running ahead of herself. Besides, she thought as his arms came around her, the here and now was pretty damn amazing. “Thank you,” she whispered against his skin, and then, unable to resist, kissed his throat.

What I thought about Almost Just Friends

In this fourth book in the Wildstone series from Jill Shalvis, Piper has taken care of her younger brother and sister for most of her life, and thinking that both Gavin and Winnie future's are set, she's ready to sell her grandparents place, split the money and finally get her physician's assistant certification.

Things don't work out quite like Piper planned.  Her siblings return home with secrets and there's a really hot guy living next door that rocks her world for the first time in a long time.  Piper just has to figure out how to get what she needs, and that's going to take some opening up to Cam.

If you are a Jill Shalvis fan, some of what happens probably won't be a big surprise.  What I like about the Wildstone series is that it not only focuses on the romance between the two main characters, there is usually a good bit of family drama on hand that enriches the story.

Piper and Cam are just so right for each other -- they'll have to get over some of the past to move forward for their future.  That's what Almost Just Friends is all about.

I loved this story. Piper and Cam are  great together and I was pulling for their HEA all the way.  The book is a quick, easy read that doesn't get boring and works very well as a standalone.  I did so like the inclusion of diverse characters, which brought a big smile to my face.

Overall, it's the kind of story you'd expect from Jill Shalvis -- well crafted and  well written, with characters that you wouldn't mind having for friends.

Now Live! 5 stars for Riven Knight (Tin Gypsy #2) by Devney Perry

RIVEN KNIGHT
Release Date: January 21st, 2020

Genevieve Daylee didn’t expect to be standing in front of a judge on her twenty-seventh birthday. But ever since her life became entangled with a former motorcycle gang, she’s learned not to expect anything but trouble.

Her mother, a woman she once admired and adored, is gone, leaving behind a trail of secrets and lies. She’s living in a tiny apartment above a garage owned by her brother, a man who loathes her very existence. And the father she met beside her mother’s grave is as much of a stranger as Isaiah Reynolds, the broken man with soulless eyes standing beside her in front of the judge.

Isaiah is her protector from the murderer at large in Clifton Forge. Though he’s more like a riven knight in dented armor than a prince on a white stallion. She knows next to nothing about him, other than he works as a mechanic. As of tonight, he’ll be sharing her bathroom.

And, according to the judge, Isaiah is now her husband.

What I thought about Riven Knight

Riven Knight picks up right where the first book in this series, Gypsy King, left off. Draven is about to go to trial for Amina's murder. After the kidnapping in Gypsy King, Amina's and Draven's daughter turns up married to Isaiah, the ex-con mechanic living above the garage.

Thinking spousal privilege is the answer to their problems, Genevieve and Isaiah know their marriage is a sham, but they need to make it look real for everyone else. They live a fine line of being a married couple in public and living like strangers in private. But living together takes its toll on their relationship and Genevieve finds herself having some feelings for Isaiah (and vice versa). If only he would open up and let her in.

This is a slow burn kind of romance, with Isaiah's secrets being the biggest hurdle they have to cross before they can move forward. Their journey to their HEA is complicated by the fact that Amina's murderer and Genevieve's kidnapper are still on the loose.

I loved Genevieve and Isaiah together. She's no pushover and doesn't let Isaiah off the hook when it comes to opening up to her. Both are strong and determined, and this is both their strength and their downfall when it comes to each other. I loved how they fell in love even though the marriage was temporary and their unique circumstances made this story feel fresh.

The killer is revealed near the end of the story and I liked that there was some closure on this story, but it all comes with a price. The world that Devney Perry has created in this series is engaging and different than other MC romances I've read and I like that very much about this series.

Looking forward to more after the epilogue too!
