Release Day Review: False 9 by Megan Erickson

A mouthy soccer stud virgin meets the secretive new girl on campus...

The last time I got laid was... oh right. Never. The only game I have is on the soccer field, where I mostly exist to make my teammates look good. I don't get the glory or the girl, and in true Lavin Saint fashion, the first impression I make to the gorgeous new girl on campus is chair-crashingly, soul-crushingly bad.

Bianca Santos seems undeterred and even intrigued by my inability to form coherent sentences around her, which is why it sucks when I find out she's my coach's niece. Off limits.

Except Bianca doesn't listen to that memo, and the more she focuses on me with those beautiful brown eyes, the less I care about the real possibility of being relegated to the bench. So when I find out she's hiding something that's threatening her, I'm done playing passive defense. I'm on the offensive now, no matter the risk--my sport, my sanity, or my life.

This time, I'm getting the glory. And the girl.

False 9 is a standalone romantic comedy with some sports, a bit of action, and a whole lot of sarcasm. Prepare for a little bit of OTT ridiculousness. HEA and no cliffhanger.

What I thought about False 9
Lavin Saint is having the time of his life playing soccer in college but there's one thing missing. He's still a virgin. Along comes Bianca and Lavin feels protective of her from the start. Did I mention that she's also related to Lavin's coach?

Bianca is drawn to Lavin as much as Lavin is drawn to her and there is a definite spark in their relationship, although Lavin isn't quite sure he's reading Bianca the way she intends as she turns hot and then cold. It's during one of these cold times that Lavin discovers her secret and the reasons why she is handing out at a little college in Pennsylvania. It's a doozy and I must say that I had a bit of a struggle with believing all of these details. The story really didn't need something that big to carry it through -- Lavin and Bianca's relationship could have survived without it.

Anyway, I did love Lavin and his family. That was really the best part of this story. I loved the diversity of a two-dads family and my heart was very happy with the way they communicated with each other. I also loved Lavin's relationships with his team and his roommates. It was supportive and just what I needed in this story. I did find the pace in the middle a little slow and that coupled with the Bianca's backstory kept me from rating this higher. I did love the soccer backdrop and thought the sport aspect was very well written.

So overall, I'm giving this 4 stars because I did love Lavin's story and it was enough to keep me reading.

Excerpt:

Rosie needed to get going. She’d promised to help her friend Nikki move today, so it was time to head back to her apartment, get changed, and be a good friend for the  day. She leaned—
A soft, swift curse jerked her head up. Normally, she didn’t hear a ton of cursing in a cemetery. Usually things were quite quiet. A faint grin tugged at her lips. Cursing and cemeteries typically did not go hand in hand. She scanned the narrow path to her right and didn’t see anything. Leaning back, she looked to her left and found the source.
A man knelt on one knee with his back to her as he picked up flowers that had fallen into a puddle left by the recent rainstorm. Even from where she sat, she could see that whatever delicate bouquet he’d carried was ruined.
Placing a hand over her eyes, she squinted in the sunlight as she watched the man rise. He was dressed as if he’d come straight from work. Dark trousers paired with a fitted white dress shirt. The sleeves were rolled up to the elbows, revealing tan forearms. It was late September and New Orleans was still circling the seventh level of hot, currently as humid as Satan’s balls in the afternoon, so she figured if she was close to dying in her black dress, he had to be minutes away from stripping off the shirt.
Still standing with his back to her, he stared down at the ruined flowers. His shoulders were tense as he turned in the other direction. His pace was brisk as he took the flowers over to an old oak tree festooned with Spanish moss. There was a small trash can there, one of the very few in the entire cemetery. He tossed the flowers and then pivoted, quickly disappearing down one of the numerous lanes.
Oh man, that sucked.
Feeling for the guy, she sprang into action. Carefully, she pulled half of the stems free and then leaned forward, placing the remaining in the vase in front of her Herpin  tomb. She picked up her keys and as she rose, she slid her purple- framed sunglasses on. Hurrying down the worn path with patchy grass, she turned down the lane she’d seen the guy go down. Luck was on her side, because she saw him near the pyramid tomb. He hung a right there, and feeling a wee bit like a stalker, she trailed behind him.
Of course, she could yell out to him and just hand him the other half of the peonies, but shouting at a stranger in a cemetery just seemed wrong. Shouting in a cemetery at all felt like something her mother would side- eye her over.
And no one side- eyed quite like her mother.
The man made another turn and then stepped out of her line of sight. Holding on to the flowers, she walked passed a tomb with a large cross and then her steps slowed.
She found him.
He was standing before a massive mausoleum, one guarded by two beautifully erected weeping angels, and he was just standing there, as still as those angels, his arms  stiff at his sides and his hands closed. She took a step for- ward as her gaze drifted to the name on the mausoleum.
de Vincent.
Her eyes widened and she blurted out, “Holy baby llama.”
The man twisted at the waist, and Rosie was suddenly standing within mere feet of the Devil.
That was what the gossip magazines called him.
That was what most of her family called him.
Rosie liked to refer to him as in her wildest dreams.

What I thought about Moonlight Scandals

Everyone in New Orleans knows of the de Vincent family and their scandals and secrets.  Considering the oldest of the brothers is nicknamed "the devil", the family is just bad news. But when Rosie meets Devlin de Vincent by chance at the cemetery, and her best friend is involved with a different de Vincent brother, it's hard for Rosie to stay away from this family.  It doesn't hurt that Devlin de Vincent is practically unapproachable and incredibly sexy-- that just adds to his mysterious appeal.

Devlin is just as intrigued by Rosie as she is by him, especially when she doesn't cater to Devlin like most everyone else in his life.  Their banter is absolutely delicious and I adored these two together!  At first glance it would seem that these two don't get along at all, but it's really a whole boatload of sexual tension between them and Jennifer Armentrout plays out their building relationship just perfectly.  It's sweet and sexy and super scorchin' hot!

Most of the book is devoted to their burgeoning relationship around the backdrop of Rosie's paranormal investigations and Devlin's dealing with family mysteries.  When these two worlds collide, Devlin's family secrets come spilling out and put all of the de Vincent family and Rosie in danger. Rosie is fearless in her support of Devlin, even when his brothers question his motives and outcomes.

I really enjoyed this series as it has many elements that I love -- such as the paranormal aspects and a slow building romance between the main characters.  Moonlight Scandals has some amazing and awesome banter between Rosie and Devlin and a gradual reveal of all the secrets and scandals within the family. I just loved everything about this series and Moonlight Scandals is definitely my favorite of the trilogy.

Moonlight Scandals is best read after reading the first two books of the series, but you can read it standalone, although I think you'll be going back to grab the first two books so you have the whole story.

I hope to see more contemporary titles from Jennifer L. Armentrout.  She's able to translate all the best things from her NA and YA worlds into this suspenseful romance, and that's really terrific for readers.

Definitely recommended.
