ARC Review:Daring Fate by Megan Erickson

DARING FATE
Silver Tip Pack #1

Blurb:

We all have tragic backstories in today's world...

I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.

When I'm taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I'm sure I'm about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.

As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he's more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister's life, I have to make a choice I never thought I'd face—my sister's life or my mate's? That's if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…

Footsteps sounded above and, despite Reese's posture, I went right to him, shielding him with my body. He huffed against my chest, then settled his hands tentatively on my hips.

Noweres smelled like rotting corpses left out in the sun for five days. Even protected by the small ledge above us, the stench surrounded us, and I had to bury my nose in the crook of my arm. All around me, my pack members gasped for breath and blinked through watery eyes while trembling at the sounds of the chatter above us, the roars and growls, all which swirled to deafening levels. I couldn't hear myself think, couldn't do anything but press closer to Reese, whose entire body was shaking. He clung to me tighter, pressing his forehead against my chest.

By the sounds of it, the Nowere pack was large, maybe fifty to seventy-five strong, and we'd be no match for them, even if all of us shifted. My little wolf would be overpowered in a second, no matter how much I tried to protect him.

The Nowere brain had one function and that was to detect living things and consume them or turn them. They had a keen sense of smell and poor eyesight. Their frustrated grunts and stomps above, which rained dirt and stones down on our heads, told me they smelled us.

Noweres were dumb, but I wouldn't put it past them to somehow slip off the cliff and land right on our little ledge. I wasn't sure how long we were there, huddled together as the Noweres stomped above us. But eventually the chatter began to retreat and the footsteps lessened. I was breathing easier when a fist-sized rock crashed to the ledge floor, then four-foot claws curled over the edge of the cliff right near my head.

I held up my hand to signal silence, never taking my eyes off those claws. The panic was welling up inside me, for Reese, for my pack. For myself. I stuffed it down, calling on every bit of alpha I had in me.

A gust of air blew a cloud of dirt in front of the ledge, a Nowere exhale, which brought with it another cloud of stench, then the chattering started. I glanced at my pack, who were staring at the claws and at me, like do something.

The air heated from the Nowere body and our breaths. Fear swirled in the air like a dust cloud, and I hoped like hell it didn't tip into panic.

The foot claws uncurled and disappeared. I held my breath for one second, two, and then in a shower of dust and rotting fur, a Nowere crashed to the cliff in front of us.

I shoved Reese back into the cave and shifted immediately to my Were form as the Nowere flailed, trying to gain its balance as it scrambled for purchase on the edge. Its teeth chattered in time with my racing heart as my bones morphed. Just as it regained its footing, I finished my shift.

The Nowere threw his head back on a roar, and we met on the ledge in a clash of claws.

What I thought about Daring Fate

In this new M/M paranormal romance from Megan Erickson, it's a battle for survival between rival groups of shifters, and I use that term loosely, because these werewolves are so much more.

Reese and his brother Jude escape one group only to be captured by another.  Things change in a big way when it turns out that Reese has a serious connection to the leader of the pack, and vice versa. But things don't remain quiet for long as Reese and Jude have a sister who needs rescuing.

Megan Erickson goes back to basics with these characters, making them seem both human and animal in their behavior, especially when it comes to sex, and there's plenty of that in this book!  Daring Fate definitely captures the aspects of pack animals in a very organic way, and for me, that's what make this book feel very fresh and powerful.

There's plenty of action sequences that kept the story paced nicely and left me wanting more of this world.  The romance between Reese and Dare, the leader of the pack also had me hooked and even a little choked up at times. I was able to get invested in them right from the start.

I did find that some of the situations in this book have been done before, and I  hope for more twists and turns as this series progresses. Overall, this was a great start with world building that makes me want to see what's going to happen next to the members of the Silver Tip pack.

If you are in the market for a hot M/M paranormal romance set in a new world, this might be for you.

Excerpt
“Clifford is looking for a blonde with a toddler, not a brunette with a boyfriend.”

Sasha zipped her stare to him, her lush lips parted in surprise. “A what?”

“Boyfriend. Me. We’re going to the bandstand about midmorning, after the joggers but before the stroll-through-the-park-at-lunch crowd. The moms pushing strollers that time of day won’t pay us much mind. If Clifford has surveillance on the area, all he’ll see is two people hand in hand, seemingly in love.” He picked up the Saints ball cap he’d bought and shoved it on his head. “Not only will you look different, but by tomorrow morning, I’ll have enough stubble to pass as a beard. With the bill over my face and these”—he extracted a pair of cheap, dark sunglasses, tag dangling—“no one will recognize me. You have a pair in there, too.”

“And makeup?” She ignored the glasses and started pulling cosmetics from the bag.

He shrugged, hoping he hadn’t fucked up. “One of the female clerks helped me.”

Sasha studied the BB cream that was supposed to adjust to her skin tone, the soft peachy-pink blush, and a translucent powder. A little compact with some brown, gold, and rosy shadows pressed into the shape of an eye shimmered behind the plastic lid.

“The woman said these colors would work for most anyone. When I told her you had hazel eyes, she recommended those shadows.”

“You remembered?”

The color of her eyes? Yeah, he’d never forgotten. “There’s a nude lip in there, too. Whatever that means.”

Nick wished like hell Sasha would give him some sort of reaction. Was she pleased? Pissed? Or just puzzled?

Suddenly, she smiled at him. “This is the most makeup I’ve had in what seems like forever. Oh, the lipstick looks pretty. Mascara!” She hugged it to her chest. “I’ve missed this. Thanks.”

He sighed with relief as she pulled out a couple of toothbrushes, toothpaste, a new brush, a travel-sized lotion. “You’re welcome. Sasha—”

What I thought about  Dirty Wicked

This book reminded me why like I the Wicked series by Shayla Black. She knows how to write some sexy alphas that are a bit dirty and have a heart of gold.

Nick just got out of jail when he gets pulled into a nasty situation involving his dead friend's widow. It was an instant attraction that he's held at bay for the last three years but when she whos up on his doorstep in trouble, he can't turn her away.

Sasha  has been running for her life and her toddler is in need of medical attention. She doesn' twant to ask Nick fo rhelp, but she has no where else to turn. She's even willing to agree to his conditions.  But the longer they spend together, Sasha realizes just how much Nick means to her.

There's plenty of action and  sexual tension in this Dirty Wicked novella, and it was a treat to revisit this world.

ARC Review:Decidedly Off Limits by Stina Lindenblatt

Best Friend Rule #1: never want the guy’s sister.
Oops.

Trent Salway is one of San Francisco’s hot up-and-coming-under-thirty bachelors. A highly successful mutual fund portfolio manager, a workaholic, and a ladies’ man, he’s got everything he could possibly want…except one thing.

Physical therapist Kelsey Quaid dumped her ex-fiancé six months ago because she was tired of not even being a distant second to his career. Which is why despite secretly crushing on her big brother’s best friend for as long as she can remember, there’s no way Kelsey can go there. One workaholic in her life is more than enough, thank you very much.

Before Kelsey’s brother leaves on his Navy SEAL mission, he asks Trent one simple request: make sure Kelsey isn’t dating any assholes while he’s away. As Trent does his best to do just this, he and Kelsey spend more and more time together. Sparks fly, as do a few items of clothing, and the next thing they know things are getting physical between them. Now, Trent has to decide what to do about the woman he’s falling for—the one whose brother would take him down faster than he takes down the enemy. And Kelsey will have to decide if Trent is just another workaholic or if he’s decidedly off limits.

What I thought about Decidedly Off Limits

In this classic tale of "never date your best friend's sister", Trent has fallen hard for his best friend's younger sister, Kelsey, who also happens to be besties with Trent's sister Erin.  It's like a double warning not to go there, but yes, after some serious derailing of Kelsey's blind dates, Trent and Kelsey share a kiss that knocks them both for a loop.

Both of them have had relationships that didn't quite work out in the past, so their communication skills aren't the best, especially with the amount of assuming and lots of little white lies as Trent and Kelsey decide to be "friends with benefits."  Since neither Trent nor Kelsey want to admit to their real feelings for each other, it takes a while for these two to come clean with friends and family. There are some cute scenes as Trent and Kelsey attempt to keep their growing relationship from them.

Unfortunately, there's a serious bump in the road before they reveal their secret, causing Trent and Kelsey to call it off. Trent volunteers to be auctioned off at a "Bachelors of San Francisco" fundraiser, and Kelsey just happens to be there.  There's a very adorable ending to the auction.

I liked this sweet story of two people who are attracted to each other, yet hesitant to take a chance because of their relationships with friends and siblings. While there were some slow spots for me, I loved the ending and how everything came together for them.

This is a feel good romance that is light on conflict and full of sexy scenes as Kelsey and Trent find their way to each other. If you are looking for something on the lighter side, this might be a title for you.

I have a Physical Education degree from the University of Calgary and a Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alberta, where I specialized in energy metabolism. Definitely cool stuff (seriously, it is!). During my undergrad, I worked in Helsinki (Finland) for one summer, cleaning bathrooms and saunas in a recreation center for the elderly. The seniors were great. The bathrooms, not so much. I eventually became a pharmaceutical sales representative (not a great one may I add) and now I write full time.
