About DUSK: The Dire Wolves Chronicles continue... After you have sacrificed your freedom what else is there to lose? Mary Anne has given her word to Hunter that she’ll stay as his mate, but every second she spends with him takes her further away from Gage when he needs her the most. Caught between love and duty, Mary Anne discovers that her troubles are just beginning, and that sometimes love comes at a great price.

Excerpt Two:

“Hunter?” she asked in a low voice as we sat in front of the fire downstairs. We’d started back with our favorite evening ritual, only now she sat right at my side. The rest the pack was giving us plenty of space. There were benefits to being Alpha.

“Yes?” I smiled at her. She was so beautiful. I zeroed in on her lips, needing to claim them with my own.

“Tell me about your dreams.”

“My dreams?” I put an arm around her and pulled her down into my side. I could feel her heartbeat and that put me at ease. “What kind of dreams?”

“What kind do you have?”

“The usual types I guess.”

“Are they ever about me?” She looked up at me with those expressive eyes of hers.

“You mean now? Are you asking if I dream about you?”

“Now. Before.”

“Before? Why would I have dreamed about you before I met you? How would that be possible?” Someone had told her something. That someone was going to be in a lot of trouble.

“How is it possible that you’re a wolf? I’m starting to believe that anything is possible.”

I ignored her use of the term wolf. It wasn’t worth an argument. She’d start calling us Dires eventually. “Do you really want to know?” The can of worms had been opened. There was no turning back.

“Yes. Why else would I ask?”

“Come here.” I gestured with my hand.

“I am here.”

“On to my lap.” If she wanted something from me, I was getting something from her.

“You want me to sit on your lap?”

“You know exactly what I’m asking you to do.”

She put a leg over mine and straddled my lap. She settled herself down, awakening my body even more than it already was. “Happy now?”

“I’m always happy when you’re with me.”

About DIRE: Dire: The Dire Wolves Chronicles Gage was the first guy I ever wanted. He was my first crush and my first fantasy, but he wasn't my first in any other way because he never saw me as anything more than a friend— at least not until the night that changed everything. It was all Gage's fault. He insisted we drive through the storm and take the back roads. By the time the storm hit full force we had no chance. One night of snowbound sex changed our relationship forever. The problem was at the same time I caught another guy’s attention. This other guy happened to be the alpha of a pack of shifter wolves. I thought the wolves were the worst of my problems, but I was wrong. When things went from bad to worse I had to make a lifelong sacrifice to save Gage, but what price is too much to save the one you love?

Release Date: December 22, 2014

Synopsis:

She left glitter in his AC vents. He put green dye in her conditioner.

She buttered his bathroom floor, and he kidnapped her precious puppy.

Layla Mullens hates Donovan Donley. His crude language, his wide shoulders, his crystal blue eyes…she hates that she can’t stop herself…from kissing him or landing in his bed.

And Donovan Donley wants nothing more than to knock Layla off her princess pedestal. He hates her stuck up attitude and her soft, tempting lips. He especially hates that her father is his coach.

But he’s fine with their arrangement—act horrible to each other during the day, attack each other naked at night. It works.
But one night changes everything. When Layla doesn’t show, and Donovan’s cold bed stays empty, the lies he tells himself to keep Layla out of his mind aren’t enough to keep him from missing her. And needing her. Something he promised himself would never happen.

The white flags in their prank war have been lowered but their high stakes battle has just begun.

 Excerpt

“I don’t do promises.” His voice was even, composed and Layla didn’t think that declaration was said to be cruel. It was point of fact, something Donovan clearly thought Layla needed to know.

“I don’t want any.”

“I don’t do emotion.” The slow way he twisted her long hair around his finger didn’t make her think that emotion was absent in mind. She didn’t care if it was.

“Not asking for that.”

And then Donovan’s gaze left her hair, moved over her face until they stopped at her eyes. “I like the way you feel. I like how hot and tight and sweet your body is.” He moved closer, barely touching his hips to hers. “This needs to be between us. The others, they like to complicate sex. They like for it to mean something or everything. I don’t. You don’t, Layla. Not with me.”

“Not remotely.”

“If I didn’t like you at least a little bit, then I wouldn’t want to fuck you.”

She wanted that little issue cleared up. Layla knew what Donovan’s touch, his lips did to her, but outside of those moments when the air warmed around them, when they were pulled together by those licks of heat, she didn’t like him. Had no desire to be around him.

“I don’t like you, Donovan. I don’t think I ever will.” She didn’t think too much about the frown that pulled at his lips or how his eyebrows pushed together as though he doubted her. This was Donovan Donley, her nemesis, her enemy, and she was agreeing to terms and conditions related to them sleeping together. Insane, sure, but Layla knew it would be hot. She knew it would feel wonderful. It was that idea that kept her from insulting him completely. “But when you’re inside me, I don’t have to think. I don’t have to do anything but touch and taste. That’s enough for me.”

They were silent and Layla let Donovan touch her, take her hair in his fist and lean her against the wall. There was a moment when their gazes caught and held, expressions shifting, lips hesitating, holding back as though both Donovan and Layla each pushed away any thought from their minds.

Donovan’s chin dipped to bring his gaze to her, guiding her head with his fingers twined in her hair. Layla found it aggressive and insistent and God how she liked Donovan that way. “Tomorrow night…just walk in.”

“Tomorrow?”

Layla barely caught his nod, the slow lift of his mouth as he pulled his lips into a smile. “There will be a tomorrow, Layla and a next day. I’m tired of thinking there won’t be.” He moved closer, held her face up so she couldn’t avoid his eyes. “Aren’t you?” A quick nod that Layla thought she couldn’t control and Donovan’s smile left his face. “Good. Tomorrow night, don’t park out front. I have a space in the back.”

“Ok…okay.”

“Don’t knock. You don’t ever have to knock when you come to me. Just fucking come.”

What I thought about Claiming Serenity

Donovan and Layla have been playing pranks on each other for years. They tell each other and their friends they can't stand each other.  But when Layla breaks it off with her casual boyfriend Walter, it's Donovan that provides the comfort when Layla gets drunk and she ends up in his bed.

Together they craft a "no strings" agreement.  Enemies during the day, lovers at night, no feelings or emotions required. No telling their friends because it isn't a relationship, it's just sex.  Yeah, right. That sort of deal never quite works out that way, and when Layla starts to feel more for Donovan she breaks it off.  She believes  him when he tells her that he's sworn off relationships for good and she has to protect her own heart.

But neither one of them can stay away from the either very long, and when things blow up in a major way, friends and families get involved. (no spoilers!)

It's tough to talk about the last 35% of this book without giving anything away, so all I will say is that I LOVED Claiming Serenity. I had a good-book hangover for days from this one, going back to reread a number of times.

What I love about Eden Butler's stories is that she isn't afraid to show that love can also bring real pain, but the payoff can be huge if you are willing to work at it. That usually involves working through some serious stuff, and Donovan and Layla have to do just that.  They don't always get it right the first time either, all of which makes it so much sweeter when they can move past their issues and realize the love they have right in front of them.

Even their friends and family see that their pranks and harsh words are like foreplay and that they belong together, it just takes Layla and Donovan a little longer to see.  There's a great scene between Donovan and his father as they move past old hurts and his father gives him some advice that comes from the heart. These are the little and yet so very important moments in life that are life-changing. Layla's conversations with her father are a bit more, shall I say explosive, but Coach Mullens is a key player in this story as well. They way the fathers come together to guide their adult son and daughter was one of my favorite parts of this story.

I love this series, and Eden Butler is at the top of my "must read now" list of authors.  Donovan and Layla are so awesome together, especially when they let down their guard and really look at their feelings for each other. The rest of the gang shows up too, but Claiming Serenity is really all about Donovan and Layla.

Loved Claiming Serenity. It's my first 5 star read of 2015, and I couldn't be happier about it.  As a matter of fact, I may need to go reread the end of this again right now. It's just that sweet!

If you are a fan of New Adult contemporary romance and you aren't reading this series or Eden Butler, go do it now!  Recommended.

What I thought about Call Sign Karma

Tinklee Pinkerton always wanted to fly jets with her older brother. They promised each other they’d both be fighter pilots, and just as she’s getting ready to fly beside him, he’s is killed in a crash that she witnesses. The loss of her brother leaves her filled with guilt, rage and the quest for answers as to why the aircraft went down.

When she meets Locke and he makes her feel alive again, she’s ready to embrace the fact that she has to go on with her life. But things don’t work out quite the way they want when her hot Brit lover shows up at the base and is introduced as a visiting superior officer.

Regulations force Tink and Locke apart, since continuing their relationship could mean both of them losing their wings, but even with that threat, these two cannot stay apart from each other. Another complication comes from a very hot Ash*wink*, a colleague in the Special Forces who also likes Tink.  I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, but Tink doesn’t have any conflicts over who she wants for her lover, and that’s Locke. There are some really great scenes between Tink and Ash as their relationship develops into a strong friendship.

When Ash is sent on a combat mission that doesn’t go well, Locke and Tink and the rest of the squadron are sent to assist.  Tink experiences her first combat flight and learns more about her brother (not going to spoil that for you) and generally has a difficult time of it. Things get worse when Locke is shot down and lost behind enemy lines. Tink can no longer sit by without doing something. Strap in and hold on for the ride, because things get tense and action-packed and chock full of emotions.

I loved the romance between Tink and Locke. They just really clicked for me, as did Tink’s relationship with Ash.  This is my first military romance where the heroine is in the military and I have to say I loved that about it, too. The interactions with her male colleagues, especially how she had to evaluate everything she did in the context of how it would look to them, said volumes about her experience without knocking me over the head.

I did think that some of the military scenes in the exciting climax were more for dramatic effect than realism, but that was okay in the context of the romance. It definitely left me wanting more, and I was happy to hear that Ash would be getting a story.

So overall, great start to the series, can’t wait for more.

ARC Review:Moment of Impact (Moments in Time #1) by Karen Stivali

Synopsis

Outside Collin Fitzpatrick’s dorm room is a dangerous place. Beyond his door the students of his small, conservative college think he’s straight, as does his Catholic family who'd disown him if they learned the truth. Inside, he’s safe with his incredibly sexy roommate Tanner D’Amico. Their room makes a perfect place to hide away and fall in love. The moment they cross the line from roommates to lovers, Collin becomes caught between their heavenly passionate encounters and the hellish reality that someone might find out and destroy everything. Tanner's not used to being so confined, and wants to show the world how much he loves Collin. But Collin’s not sure he’s ready for the impact stepping outside will make.

What I thought about Moment of Impact

I love a good coming out story, especially one that captures the highs and lows with  sensitivity and honesty. In Moment of Impact, Karen Stivali gives us an erotic tale of first love and sexual awakening that hits that mark.

When college roommates Collin and Tanner finally give into their explosive attraction to each other, everything is just wonderful behind the closed doors of their dorm room. Collin has shaken off the guilt inflicted by his ultra-conservative mother and has come out to Tanner, but when it comes to going public with their relationship, things get tense between them.  Tanner is more comfortable with his sexuality and it becomes a source of conflict for the couple.

But when an accident puts everything in a different perspective for Collin, he makes the decision to come out, with some very serious and hurtful consequences.

Collin and Tanner are passionate and provocative, while Collin is sometimes naive, sweet and scared all at the same time.  These emotional qualities made both characters interesting to me. Oh, and did I mention they are so hot, hot, hot together?

I'm looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes in the next installment, now that Collin will be dealing with the aftermath of coming out and the sometimes roller coaster ride of being in a relationship.

Great start. Looking forward to the second book in the series.
