5 Star Review & Giveaway: Finding Serenity by Eden Butler

Mollie Malone's mom skipped out on her. Her biker dad, always loose and easy with the law, still was able to make her feel loved, and to keep her safe. But thirteen years ago, when his luck finally ran out and he landed in prison, Mollie found herself a new family - a group of friends in the sleepy little college town of Cavanagh, Tennessee, where now they all attend the local university. These girls know about the rotten roots of her family tree but accept her anyway, and the bond between them is so strong and supportive that Mollie is finally able to see past graduation to a future that is bright and secure.

But sometimes the past doesn't stay buried.

Suddenly, inexplicably, there's a shadow behind every step Mollie takes. Someone is lurking in that shadow, threatening not only Mollie, but also the new family she has claimed for herself.

And it isn’t just the past that has Mollie’s life in upheaval. Hunky former Marine Vaughn Winchester - who Mollie really would like to get to know much better - thinks Mollie is just a kid; he's made it clear she wouldn't ever be able to understand the demons haunting him. But if that's what he believes, then why does he keep sticking his nose in her business? And if he thinks she’s such a kid, why does he keep trying to kiss her?

Vaughn’s mind games are frustrating, especially since Mollie knows enough about secrets to be convinced that there's something he isn’t telling her, something he's so far been able to keep hidden. But when that secret is revealed, Mollie is forced into a situation that tests her loyalty and threatens even her closest friendships - just when the shadow of her past returns, and she's going to need them the most.

'Finding Serenity' is book two in the Seeking Serenity series.

What I thought about Finding Serenity

Mollie comes home one night to find her apartment ripped off, all of her deejay equipment gone, essentially killing her livelihood. Her friends come to the rescue, and it's great to become reaquainted with Layla, Sayo, Autumn, Declan, and Joe from the first book in the series, even under some difficult circumstances.

It isn’t long before it’s clear that it wasn’t just some random act. It also doesn’t help that Vaughn, a guy that Mollie lusted after and was rejected by suddenly seems to be everywhere in her business.

Vaughn, a former Marine, jumps right into the situation, one minute flirting with her, the next pushing her away. When the truth is revealed, Mollie and Vaughn are forced together and also forced to face the growing feelings between them. There’s a lot of heat and a lot of frustration in this back-and-forth relationship. At times I wanted to scream at them to just get together, but there is so much going on around them, it’s easy to see how everything in their lives is topsy-turvy.  Not to mention that Vaughn has some seriously disturbing history himself.

There’s an incredibly suspenseful plot to Finding Serenity that just brings this series up a notch in my opinion. I liked the first book in this series-- and I loved this one. There are plenty of good reveals throughout this story, so I don’t really want to spoil the plot and take that suspense and action element away, because it really is done very well especially the drama involving Mojo, Mollie’s biker dad, who as a secondary character lights up the scenes he has in the book. And then there’s always the question of whether Vaughn and Mollie will be able to come to terms and understanding of their own growing relationship.

Eden Butler does a great job with Mollie and Vaughn, taking two slightly prickly characters and making them very sympathetic. Both have dealt with some serious hardships, so it wasn’t hard to cut them some breaks. They aren’t perfect either, and I think that was part of their charm.

There’s a great level of emotion in this too along with the suspense, and I found myself needing a tissue toward the end after an incredibly emotional scene with Mojo and Mollie that knocked my socks off and had me crying in the “good-book” way. Just so many good things to say about this one.

Finding Eden was chock-full of romance, suspense and has an action-packed storyline. I devoured this book in a few hours because I just couldn’t put it down. I’m hooked on this series.

Recommended.

4 1/2 star Review & Giveaway: All Lined Up by Cora Carmack

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

What I thought about All Lined Up

Dallas Cole has lived with football all her life, and after a less than satisfying relationship with her high school quarterback boyfriend, she swears off football players. With her father being coach, it only complicates things.

All Carson McClain wants is a spot on the team and the chance to get a scholarship so he can stay in school. He's focused solely on football, that is until a gorgeous coed falls in his lap at a party one night. There's some serious attraction between these two from the very start, especially since Dallas doesn't know that the guy she kissing is on the team. I was impressed right from the start myself, there's some super hot and sexy kissing right from the start and as a reader I could feel the heat between these two characters.

Of course Dallas does eventually discover that her mystery make-out is on her father's football team. It doesn't go well is an understatement, but she can't really deny the connection she feels with Carson either. Loved the drama in the scene where Dallas finds out this secret scene, it was really terrific!

Both of the main characters are compelling and are dealing with some interesting internal conflicts. There's Carson, conflicted between his ticket to the future--football, and the girl that he can't get out of his head. And Dallas has a whole truck-load of baggage she has to deal with, including soem unresolved issues with her father, her potential career choice, and the football player that makes her just a little bit crazy.

There's a lot to this story, and I loved that it deviated somewhat from the usual formulaic romance. There were some surprises here for me, and when you read 4-5 New Adult titles a week, this was a very refreshing read, with lots of good internal conflict and unexpected drama challenging the couple along the way.

There are some interesting secondary characters in this too. Levi, Dallas's ex-boyfriend has a rather significant and sleezy role to play, and I'm not sure exactly how I feel about Silas just yet. I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen with them and how it played out was very unexpected.

I loved Carson’s maturity and how he handled everything with Dallas. Their relationship built in a very realistic way, with the stops and starts of all young love. But when they managed to get past their hangups, they were oh-so-hot together.

The football sequences were well done too. Great start to this series and I'm really looking forward to more!

Really enjoyed this. Read in just about one sitting because I didn't want to put this down and then went back and read my favorite parts. Definitely a winner for me.

Excerpt

God must be rewarding him for his patience. That had to be the answer. There was no other reason why he would trip over a scenario this sweet. Ivy was outside wearing nothing but a pair of bikini bottoms and a frown.

Blake killed the engine and slowly pulled his boat up to the dock. He tied it up, taking careful steps to secure his baby and make Ivy wait as long as humanly possible. From what he could see, she wasn’t going anywhere, even if she wanted to.

He climbed onto the dock and strolled causally over to the Hudson cabin with his hands thrust into his pockets. Taking his time, Blake soaked in every delicious detail, from Ivy’s irritated scowl to the full globes of her breasts pressed beneath her inadequate hands. He’d never been so jealous of a pair of hands in his life.

His jeans tightened uncomfortably as his inspection ran over her mostly bare body. He was frankly surprised by the reaction. Not because she wasn’t a beautiful and sexy woman—she was; that was a given—but because his dick had a deep, abiding hatred of Ivy. So did the rest of him, but it was his penis that had become the center of national attention for being woefully inadequate. At the moment, however, he had ample evidence to the contrary.

ARC Review: Moon Shine (Takhini Wolves #4) by Vivian Arend

Moon Shine, Takhini Wolves #4
By Vivian Arend

When the past hurts, it bites.

Meet Evan Stone. Laid-back, in-control Alpha of the Takhini Wolves. Life’s not perfect, but he’s got a good handle on his world. At least, he did—until the night he ends up in jail, soaking wet and wondering what the hell just happened.

The “what” is Amy Ryba, a vengeful female who’s decided it’s long past time to make Evan pay for his sins. Amy has spent years tracking him down, and the last nine months working in secret to destroy him. She’s ready for anything—except discovering the shifter she hates is her mate.

Suddenly, Evan’s not so very in control, of himself or his pack. And unless Amy can learn to forgive and forget, she’ll have to do the unthinkable: reject her mate.

With two packs watching, one thing is certain. Their personal issues won’t stay personal for long. If Amy and Evan can’t find a way to work together, there won’t a happily-ever-after for them…or any of the wolves of Whitehorse.

Warning: Contains angsty wolves. Lots of angsty wolves causing explosions of all sorts, playing bad pranks, hacking computers, and having angry sex against a wall or two. Not all at the same time, though, because that would be silly.

Exclusive Excerpt:
He wrapped her arms around his back and rolled her on top. She couldn’t resist licking his neck, tasting the salt lingering on his skin and the passion of his wild wolf.

They lay in a heated tangle for the longest time. Evan stroking her cheek, Amy drawing circles on his chest with her nails. Somewhere in the silence they were connected, and neither of them seemed ready to break the tenuous bond.

It wasn’t forever, but it had been pretty spectacular just the same.

What I thought about Moonshine

This is my third title from Vivian Arend, and once again, I'm left wanting more, and I mean that in a good way.

I've read lots of paranormal romance, but not many where the central characters are shifters. I'm finding out what I've been missing.

Evan is the alpha of one pack, Amy the alpha of another. Amy has a score to settle with Evan. There's only one complication. They are mates in the wolf world, and that just really complicates things.

The two alphas have a lot to figure out, and foremost that how to best take care of their pack. It's a matter of two very different styles of leadership versus the need to give in to their wolf and mate.  I loved the first 2/3 of this book as they try to figure this all out.  I could feel the conflict between their human side and wolf side, as well as their frustrations with each other.  Vivian Arend does an awesome job with portraying this and it pulled me into the story in such a way that I didn't want to put it down.

This was my first book read in this series, and I didn't feel like I missed anything by starting with Book 4.  If anything, it made me want to go back and read books 1, 2, and 3.

The last 1/3 of the book didn't quite reach the emotional level that the first 2/3 did for me. I'm not sure why that was, but it didn't really detract too much from the story for me.  I kept reading and did really love the story of these two wolf packs and these two very hot alphas.

Giveaway & Review: Where There's Smoke by Elizabeth Lee

We are thrilled to celebrate the Release Day of Elizabeth Lee's WHERE THERE'S SMOKE!!!

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE is a New Adult Romantic Suspense novel that you don't want to miss!  The hot cover made me want to read this and I wasn't disappointed.

About WHERE THERE’S SMOKE:
There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He'd let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He'd perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn't just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.

Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She'd saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren't tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she's forced to see that things aren't always as they seem. The people who she'd left behind might not have been saved at all.

In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper's sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE Excerpt:

I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm. Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me. The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us.

The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight. It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops. Now it was jeans and jackets. Well, actually, now it was nothing.

I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done. I wasn't embarrassed. Far from it. In fact, I'd never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry.

“That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips.

“Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him. The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space. “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine. Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he'd commandeered from an airplane parked beside us.

I liked this side of him. The side that wasn't perfect and calculated. The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted. He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control. We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be.

“You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned. “I wanted tonight to be special. I thought we'd go back to my house after we looked at the planes. My parents are gone and...” He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening. Doubting his ability to be perfect. He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things. “It didn't go exactly as I planned, but—”

“It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.” I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his. “And I love you, too.”

That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw. I could probably say the same for him about me. Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn't—which was most of the time. When I was with him, I didn't feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off. He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence. They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time. Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was.

“So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked. “This being your first breaking and entering and all.”

It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his. I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind. He was the good boy. The straight-A student. The doting son.

“Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I'm a regular badass. Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.” He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads. Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams. A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls. “I'm not sure we actually broke into anything. More like casually strolled in.”

We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked. The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business. Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate. I think that night, that's what we’d both thought: What's the worst that could happen? “So what's next then, Clyde? Wanna rob a bank?”

What I thought about Where There's Smoke

Ryland and PIper were highschool sweethearts, making plans to stay together after graduation and Ry goes away to college on a scholarship. But everyone said she wasn’t good for him, and when there’s some major trouble what they say about Pepper seems to be true.

Six years go by. Star-student Ryland never gets out. Never goes to college. The reader doesn’t know why or what happened that fateful night when everything fell apart. But as the truth is slowly revealed, it’s easy to feel sympathetic toward Ry and even Piper.

I liked the story, and I was convinced that Ry still loved her after six years, even though he had some things he had to say first. But like matches and gasoline ;) -- another tragedy strikes, forcing Ry, Piper and Piper’s sister Hadley on the run.

The second half of the book had a nice fast pace, and the story kept moving along. And even though circumstances are very dire for all of them, it gives Ry and Piper time to reconnect.. and reconnect… *wink*. There’s some heat there!

The final resolution of their plight is a bit unbelievable and left me a bit conflicted as to whether the ends justifies the means. But since this is a HEA, it’s all good.

Overall, I liked the characters, the fast pace and the slightly unpredictable plot. A solid 3.5 for me, with an honorable mention for a very hot cover.

In high school, Devlin was a sweet, shy geek who’d had a crush on her, but when he’d found the courage to ask her to Prom, she’d turned him down flat. In hindsight, she should have worried more about the quality of the boy than her reputation with the popular crowd. But this isn’t high school anymore. And they want her any way—every way—they can have her. Can she resist either man? Does she even want to try?
