Heavy is the head that inherits the crown.

The only thing on Daire Archer’s mind when she pulled a disappearing act on Christmas was proving she was worthy of being her father's daughter. She was born an Archer, which was a blessing and a curse, and Daire was determined to show everyone she deserved to carry the legacy that came with her name.

There is power in a name, and being an Archer meant Daire needed to do better, to be better. At least, that’s what she thought she needed, until a boy from nowhere—with a name that meant nothing—showed her that she was already pretty great just the way she was.

Campbell has always rejected everything concerning his maniacal father and his troubled past. When he left Nowhere, he was certain he wanted a nice, quiet life free from the only things he'd ever known: violence and bloodshed. He thought he needed to be a better man. He wondered if there was a kinder, gentler version of himself under his thick armor of scars and tattoos.

It wasn't until he started chasing Daire Archer all over hell and back that Campbell realized he needed to be a man who was better at being bad than everyone else in his troubled world.

Because now, he had a problematic princess to protect. One with an uncanny ability for finding trouble. Where Daire is concerned, being a good guy isn't necessary.

What I thought about Son of a Gun

The Archer family is the cornerstone of the Marked Men series from Jay Crownover, so I was really excited to get my hands on this book especially when I heard it was going to be a crossover with The Point series, another of my favorites from Jay Crownover.

When Daire Archer runs away from her family, the mysterious Campbell is asked to go find her by "Uncle Benny." Thanks to a tracking tag, Campbell locates Daire in the middle of a snowstorm and whisks her away from everything, including her troubles and her family. That causes some major drama for parents Rule and Shaw.

Daire and Campbell end up chasing down some of Campbell's demons in the process and he's got quite a few. I was totally intrigued by his story and background. I wasn't quite sure if he was a good guy with a bad streak or a bad guy with a good streak and I really liked that about this character.

Daire was a bit harder to get close to, until it became clear how much she was like her father -- impulsive, a bit erratic and yet there is something lovable there too. I liked how Daire was presented to me as a reader. I didn't quite get her at first -- I thought she was a bit self-indulgent and still naive, but as I got to know her, I saw how she was both a product of Rule and Shaw and her own person at the same time. As a long time reader of this author's work, I appreciated those connections. The Archer family still has a whole lotta ego, that's for sure!

I found the action scenes very tense and exciting and I wished there were more in the story, but it was all good. I love it when this author brings a bit of the romantic suspense into her stories and there's some of that here. As a fan of The Point series, I did love how this crossover worked very well for me as a reader. Do check out the book list at the end that shows where these characters were originally introduced. Great for new readers and a wonderful reminder of books to re-read for long time fans.

The ending was pretty great, and I adored how Daire and Campbell's story ended with a bit of a hint of the future (yeah, I'd read that) and the teaser for Zowen's story up next. I do like how this series isn't just a rehash of the original series and stands well on it's own.

Overall, I enjoyed Son of a Gun. Campbell is a sympathetic character and matched up very well with Daire. Their love scenes are scorchin' hot. There's loads of interactions between the sons and daughters of the Marked originals, and enough of Rule and Shaw to satisfy established readers of this series.
