Review: The Highlander's Pirate Lass (The Brothers of Wolf Isle #2) by Heather McCollum

Eliza Wentworth is no lady. After the notorious pirate Jandeau murdered her family, she vowed to spend the rest of her life at sea, saving others. She’d rather be firing cannons than embroidering pillows—or worse, bowing to the demands of a husband. But when she’s stranded on an island off the coast of Scotland, now she is the one in need of help. And, annoyingly, that help comes not only from a man, but a man she struggles to resist.

Highlander Beck Macquarie has never met a woman like Eliza. He hasn’t met many women, period, thanks to the blasted curse set upon Wolf Isle decades ago. To save the clan, he needs a wife and bairns, and rough-around-the edges Eliza is anything but wife material. She has no intention of staying once she’s able to set sail again. He should let her go. But the desire between them is impossible to ignore.

When she asks Beck to teach her the ways of the bedroom while she bides her time on his island, he can’t say no. As they learn more about each other, though, past trauma and secrets resurface. Now, Eliza must choose between the freedom and comfort of the only life she’s ever known and sacrificing it all to save the people she loves…including Beck.

What I thought about The Highlander's Pirate Lass

Heather McCollum returns to Wolf Isle and its curse for The Highlander's Pirate Lass. Eliza Wentworth has been part of Captain John's crew since her family was tortured and murdered by the Pirate Jandeau and subsequently saved by Captain John. Now she helps Captain John rescue other women and children left behind by the pirate's depraved activities. But Captain John abandons Eliza and a few others on an unknown island, she's found by Beck Macquarie.

Beck is immediately suspicious about Eliza's story but that doesn't stop him from rescuing her and taking her back to Wolf Isle.

He becomes smitten by Eliza and falls for her spunky attitude and the fact she wants him to teach her the "ways of love" It's easy to see where this is all going, except Beck loves sailing and has no intentions of settling down, even if the curse says he must do that to restore Wolf Isle to its former glory. The same is true for Eliza -- she's devoted to saving others like herself and Captain John, so it takes some work for Beck and Eliza to truly be together even though they both have a lot in common.

Even though this is the second book in the series, it works well as a standalone. Readers of Heather McCollum's companion series may recognize some characters as well, but it is not necessary to read book one in the series to enjoy this story.

This fast-paced story had my attention from the start. There's plenty of action and adventure as one might expect with pirates and it's all just so entertaining. From the romance between Beck and Eliza to the pirate Jandeau and Captain John and his crew, I loved it all! So much fun and just the kind of historical romance that I like with lots of steamy moments and suspense.
