Release Day Review: 5 Stars for Not What I Expected by Jewel E. Ann

Not What I Expected by Jewel E. Ann is now live!

Are humans meant to mate for life?

After four kids and an unfortunate but fateful end to her twenty-two-year marriage, Elsie Smith meets the new guy in town.

Kael Hendricks is ... a little younger, a lot sexy, and too confident for his own good. He also doesn't believe in marriage and all that goes with it.

And ...

He's just opened a new business that threatens the livelihood of Elsie's family's store--just in time for the holidays.

The problem?

There's an undeniable attraction that leads to out of control situations, a loss of inhibitions, and a lot of small town gossip.

As Elsie tries to redefine herself and convince her family she isn't having a midlife crisis, she's forced to answer the biggest question of all ...

Can she love an enemy who will never surrender?

What I thought about Not What I Expected
Elsie Smith has been married twenty two years. When her marriage ends, she's faced with grief, and she's keeping a secret that shrouds her in guilt.  It doesn't help that a new store opens in town that threatens the long-time family specialty shop.

Store owner Kael Hendricks is unlike anyone the little town of Epperly has seen before. He's hot, hot, hot. And young(er).  And he wants Elsie. I loved these two together.

This is a story that many women will be able to relate to and even so, it's unique and interesting at the same time. As Elsie comes out of her grief stage to move forward, Kael is there to challenge her thinking and ignite her life in new ways.  I adored the dialogue between these two characters and how their very real conversations impacted Elsie's life and helped her grow. Kael's thoughts on life aren't traditional and I really loved that about him (among other things ;-)

This is a standalone story and a page turner told from Elsie's point of view. I'm not sure if I would call it a romance or women's fiction or both.  It doesn't really matter because its terrific either way.  I loved Elsie's journey and I think that Jewel E. Ann hit some very insightful notes about love and marriage and freedom.

Definitely recommended.
