Release Day Review: 5 Stars for For Lucy by Jewel E. Ann

For Lucy by Jewel E. Ann is now live!

From USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jewel E. Ann comes a novel so heartfelt and real it redefines the meaning of love.

I'm the wrong guy in the right place the night I steal Tatum Bradshaw from another man. When she mistakes me for her blind date, I decide she deserves a man who shows up on time ... like me. Emmett Riley, Mr. Punctual.

Once I confess my true identity and convince her I'm not a creep--just a thief--it's only a matter of time before my sexy smile and quick wit claim her heart, her hand in marriage, and the perfect life.

Unfortunately, perfection is an illusion, like the promises of our wedding vows. No one can prepare for the unimaginable--the heartbreaking exception to all the rules in life.

When thirty seconds destroys everything, I have to find a new existence and keep my promise to always love our daughter, Lucy, the most.

For Lucy, I will keep a secret, and I will watch my wife drift into the arms of another man.

Given the chance ... can I reclaim my wife and the pieces of our life?

What I thought about For Lucy

Like many of Jewel E. Ann's books, it will be difficult to get too deep into this story without giving away spoilers. so I will leave it at the synopsis -- but do pay attention to the content warning as this story does contain some subject matter that may be upsetting. This is a story of coming back from tragedy.

The story is told from the perspective of Emmett Riley and the details of how he came to be in his situation are revealed through alternating the timeline between the present and the past. He tells a story of falling in love and building a family until one day everything explodes.

I adored Emmett. His heart is clearly on display as he relays the story. His pain is palpable, as is the undying love he has for his family. But love just isn't enough for what they are going through and there's no easy fix. I found that I could relate to Emmett's feelings for his family so well, and even during his moments of justified anger, I could still feel that core strength in his character.  He's a very compelling character in this story.

This was a book I stayed up all night reading once I started. I was immediately drawn into this story and loved the way the events are presented.  When I got to the end, all I could do was smile.  I did love where everyone ended up, especially Emmett and his wife and their need to educate others on the critical thirty seconds that could change so many lives.

For Lucy is billed as a second-chance romance, and it is much more than that.  It's a story of undying love and the price one can pay for that kind of love.  I loved every word of this one.

Release Day Review: 5 Stars for Make Me Wilder (Wilder Adventures #1) by Serena Bell

This tent is too small for the both of us. And I like it that way.

Gabe
I was minding my business. Literally. I promised my dad I’d take care of the Wilder family adventure business in our little Oregon town of Rush Creek, which also means looking out for my mom, my sister, and my rowdy co-workers, AKA my brothers.

Now the business is in trouble. Overnight, Rush Creek has become a spa-and-wedding destination, and the new tourists aren’t interested in getting dirty—or at least not in the woods.

Then Lucy comes to town, all blond hair and silky blouses and spike heels. It’s her job to give Wilder Adventures a makeover. Camping to glamping, rafting to paddle board yoga, fishing trips to girls’ night sunset cruises. If she gets her way, Wilder Adventures will become Wilder Romantic Adventures.

Lucy hates small towns, getting messy, and anything involving the woods or the water—which pretty much makes her Not My Type.

That doesn’t explain why when I see her, I can’t look away. Why when I touch her, I can’t stop. And why, even though I know no one can talk a city girl into small town life, I’m still trying.

She’s driving me wild. All I can do is make her wilder.

What I thought about Make Me Wilder

I'm going to cut to the chase -- I really enjoyed Lucy and Gabe's story in Make Me Wilder. It's sweet and sexy and has a lovely HEA that left me happy and wanting more Wilders!

Lucy Spiro doesn't have good luck with men, bosses or her job at the moment, so she takes a consulting job in the small town where her mom lives in the Pacific Northwest.  She's been asked to help Wilder Adventures, a family business run by brothers and sisters in the Wilder family.  They are in serious need of updating their operations and Lucy is the person to help, even if the Wilder brothers don't really want it.

Gabe hasn't had good luck with women, and his family business is taking a hit when their small town changes its focus to more romantic ventures. He's only interested in no strings / no relationship hookups.  When he meets Lucy, he's smitten, although he doesn't really have the entire story of who she is or why she is there.

What follows is a really lovely story of two relationship-adverse people letting someone else into their lives and hearts.  Lucy is tasked with spending time with the Wilders on their various adventure tours while she's working up her proposal and in the process, learns a lot about the outdoors and what she really is looking for in her life.  She's good-natured about being a fish-out-of-water and Gabe drops his defenses too as they spend more time together.

Their fun has an expiration date when Lucy returns to her old job in New York City.

I really liked everything about this story, from the writing to the characters and the setting of the story.  It was so much fun and things were kept light (although there were a few moments of conflict in there too) and it was easy to want Lucy and Gabe to get together... and stay together.

So an awesome start to this Wilder Adventure series from Serena Bell.  I'm looking forward to more!

Two Reviews from the Vino & Veritas World of True North: Unguarded by Jay Hogan and Turnabout by Laurel Greer

Unguarded by Jay Hogan

About the Book:

I fled Boston and my cheating jerk of an ex with three hundred dollars and a lip gloss in my pocket. Waking up the next day in Burlington, Vermont, with a crick in my back and a frozen ass wasn’t exactly in the plan. If there was one. Which there wasn’t. Story of my life.

Three hours later and I’ve been hired as temporary help in the local veterinary and grooming clinic, which is kind of impressive since I know zip about animals and even less about grooming. But one thing I do know—I’m crushing hard on the sexy, absent-minded vet I work for.

My life is a hot mess. The last thing I need is another relationship. Emmett pushes all my buttons, but he isn’t out. He's overwhelmed with a business to run and a son to look after and the kind of domestic life I never thought I wanted.

I should walk away.

But Emmett believes in me, and I might just be starting to believe in myself. As different as we are, is it possible we're exactly what the other needs?

What I thought about Unguarded

Oh Tai and Emmett -- they are just so wonderful together! I'm getting a little ahead of myself here, but I really did love the main characters in this story. Tai is escaping from a bad relationship and ends up in Burlington Vermont. In need of a job and living in his car, he's directed to Emmett, the town vet who is also desperate for some help at his clinic.

The story begins with some absolutely delicious banter between these two characters that had me falling for both of them. These two are perfect together and they just pretty much fall hard for each other right away, but there is also a recognition that things are moving fast and that not everyone will understand, considering Emmett is still in the closet about being bisexual.

Things get serious when Emmett and Tai realize the depth of their feelings for each other and weigh that against how Leo, Emmett's son, is going to take it. Add in the parents and in-laws and a truly nasty ex-boyfriend and things get even more serious. There's even a situation with a dog that might not make it.

Unguarded started out very light and fun and I have to say that I missed that in the second half of the story. I wanted more banter from Tai and self-deprecating humor from Emmett, but they really did have some big hurdles to cross to get to their HEA.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story, and thought this was a great addition to the Vino & Veritas World of True North.

 Turnabout by Laurel Greer

About the Book:

I don’t have time for an unplanned visit home to help out in my father’s struggling letterpress shop. My stint in Vermont will have to be short, for a couple of reasons:

One, I’m a busy executive trying to climb the corporate ladder.

Two, my ex is still my dad’s right-hand man in the shop. And I am not over him.

Nothing has changed at the Burlington shop. Auden still has his infuriatingly sexy Scottish accent. He’s still hot, and still stubborn. Between operating the antique press with his shirtsleeves rolled up, and moonlighting at Burlington’s hottest inclusive wine bar, he pushes every one of my attraction buttons.

My falling-in-love-again buttons, too. Except I’m his polar opposite. I love change, and taking chances. Everything he avoids in life.

So why am I trying to convince him to reach for more than we’ve ever dreamed of—the possibility of forever?

Turnabout is a second-chance romance with interfering family, groveling, and a large helping of artisan stationery geekery.

What I thought about Turnabout

Carter has been climbing the corporate ladder ever since his dad rejected his expansion ideas for the family business, but when he returns home to Burlington to help out in a family emergency, he realizes just how much he left behind and just how much is missing in his life.

There's no avoiding Auden, Carter's ex and the person running the print shop family business. Oh, there';s plenty of tension between these two in this second chance romance and it takes a while for them to risk their hearts by getting too close to each other.

So, plenty of tension in this one and a slow burn until they are just forced to give in to each other and admit there are still plenty of feelings and the possibility of heartache is very high.

I really liked Carter and Auden in this story and the push and pull of their relationship as they work through old hurts and the potential for getting hurt again. Both men had a commitment to their careers that also provided some realistic conflict between them. I loved the creative side of Carter and the easy way Auden interacted with people. There were some things I wasn't crazy about though, the sexual encounters in the workplace were uncomfortable for me and the whole reason for Carter's return seemed a bit weak to me.

That being said, I did enjoy this m-m romance and would look for this author in the future.

What I thought about Fallen Jester

Cassandra Cline didn't expect to get pregnant after one night of fun with Leo Winter, a Tin Gypsy member.  She didn't expect to get kidnapped by a rival MC just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  But it happened and she's changing her plans from getting her doctorate to having a baby and moving back to Clifton Forge.  There is that one pesky detail about telling the father...

Leo Winter wasn't looking for anything but a good time when he met Cassie at the bar.  He was even more surprised to find out she was the woman kidnapped with Scarlett.  And he surely didn't expect to got to a party to find out he's about to be a father.

I really loved this romance.  It's clear from the start that Leo does have some feelings for Cassie, and he just might be able to wrap his mind around being a father... some day.  But Cassie has amazing patience with Leo, giving him time and space to get used to the idea and forging ahead with her own plans when he can't reconcile the fact that he is no longer alone.

Leo's journey to acceptance and even happiness over the pregnancy is a good one.  With a few needed nudges from his friends, especially Presley, he starts to see how good his life can be.  But he's also imperfect, so she's going to make some mistakes, which he does, sending Cassie and her parents into a questioning whether Leo really can truly handle what is happening in his life.

But the threat from the rival gang is still out there and after some accidents that could have been much more serious, the former members of the Tin Gypsies must come to grips with the fact that the still have a problem lurking out there.

I've loved this series about former MC players and them finding their HEA and Fallen Jester was just as terrific as every other title in this series.  Fallen Jester really is a wonderful love story that shows and unexpected pregnancy can be the best thing to happen to two people.  I devoured this story in a day or two and was left with a smile on my face and wanting more.

Love this series and Leo and Cassandra!

Cover Reveal: Announcing the Speakeasy Taproom Series in the World of True North

********************************

TOUCHSTONE by Karen Stivali

About the Book:

Sam doesn't think love is in the cards. The cards disagree.

When Phoebe Stevens' life implodes in a spectacularly public fashion, she's desperate to escape Manhattan. So the offer of a job setting up a new Vermont gastropub couldn’t come at a better time. Driving a U-Haul on winding mountain roads is Phoebe's personal version of hell. But when the caretaker of her guesthouse answers the door tousled, shirtless, and baking cinnamon rolls, her first impression of Vermont dramatically improves.

Sam Trembley believes everyone gets one true love, but he’s already blown his chance. He's spent five years avoiding relationships. Now he’s back in Colebury where sunrise tarot draws and moonlit hikes soothe his soul. But why do the tarot cards keep showing him this nonsense about soulmates? Could it have anything to do with the jaded city girl on his doorstep?

Playing tour guide is fun, but taste-testing her culinary creations as she shimmies her luscious hips around his kitchen is downright irresistible. Soon their chemistry burns hotter than the pub's wood-fired oven.

Has fate brought them together for a summer of love...or a lifetime of happiness?

Touchstone contains craving-inducing menu planning, a sassy white witch grandma, seismic sexy times, and tarot cards on a mission to prove soulmates are real.

About the Book:

She needs a fresh start. He wants a second chance…

My new job as a chef in a small town was supposed to be my ticket to peace and quiet. I didn’t expect to run into the former hockey star who gave me the hottest nights of my life. And, oops, he’s sort-of my new boss. So much for keeping my past where it belongs.

Ty still thinks I’m the fun party girl. He has no idea how much things have changed. One thing that hasn’t changed: the spark between us. It’s hotter than the blowtorch I use on my crème brûlée.

I’m already keeping secrets, so what’s one more? Our tryst is forbidden, it’s fun, and it gets complicated as fast as you can say “check, please.” I didn’t expect to have a future with Ty. And I definitely didn’t expect to have a baby with him.

Some falls are harder than others. But it depends on who’s there to catch you...

About the Book:

Who knew falling in love with my fake girlfriend could feel so real?

I don’t have time for distractions, which is a huge problem since my new next-door neighbor Rosalie Wentworth is very distracting. She’s kind, beautiful, and makes me laugh like no woman ever has before.

Unfortunately, the two of us add up to one really sad country song—I’m nursing a bruised ego following a broken engagement and she’s suffering through a messy divorce—so I vow to set my attraction aside and focus on being her friend instead.

That’s easier said than done, however, since her mom is convinced Rosalie and I are perfect for each other. When one of her matchmaking schemes goes a step too far, Rosalie and I hatch a plan of our own: pretend to date for a couple of months to get her mom off our backs.

It’s foolproof, really.

Only, what started as a fake relationship is starting to feel very real, and now I don’t know if I can go back to the way things were before. Because it turns out if home is where the heart is, then Rosalie is mine.

EXCERPT

As she sipped the heavy red wine, she looked around. Typical of galleries, the space was cavernous compared to the amount of work actually displayed. Her gaze traveled up the front-and-center piece, a lavender line of lights in the unmistakable shape of a phallus that stretched up the entryway to the cathedral-high ceiling. That had not been there earlier. Babette’s staff must have spent all afternoon installing it.

When she shifted her gaze, she felt her eyes widen. Out of two million people in Paris, it was

the same man that had saved her from the pickpocket in baggage claim! Her heart beat so hard, it made her blood feel like it was fizzing. Was it the wine? She’d only had a few swallows.

She realized her gaze had been locked on his. Neither of them smiling, it seemed like foreplay, and her stomach dove deliciously, as if she had taken a sudden dip on a rollercoaster.

All of this was going through her and yet, she stood motionless. She was afraid she was going to topple over and make a fool of herself, when she’d never wanted to impress anyone more.

Her face grew warm. Part of it was the force of their eye contact, but it was also at the blatant symbolism of that lavender installation, a visible sign of what throbbed between them.

But when his childhood best friend reenters his life, looking finer than any entree at a Michelin five-star restaurant, he wonders if it’s time to update his menu of life choices.

Working through past wounds with Skyler won’t be easy, though--especially with a reality-show television camera following (not quite) their every move. When their loyalty is tested, will their newly built stronghold be sturdy enough to withstand the storm?

Stronghold is a sweet and sexy romance for childhood friends to lovers, with some creative use of maple syrup and a TV crew determined to keep appearing out of nowhere.

About the Book:

Save the bees, ride a rock star.

Formerly famous . . . and planning to keep it that way.

After my band kicked me out, I ran away to Vermont, changed my name, and kept my head down. So far, it’s working and nobody knows who I am. Or who I was. Until I see geeky poet Caleb stumbling through his first open mic night and I can’t help rescuing him. He’s as sweet as the honey my bees make and sexy enough to make me rethink so many things. But I can’t tell him my secret, or I’ll lose the anonymous life I worked so hard to build.

Everyone warns me he’s too good to be true.

I can’t believe a gorgeous, successful winemaker like Tag is into shy, geeky little accountant me. But he helps me blossom and believe in my talent, and works his way into my heart and my bed… not necessarily in that order. I’m falling for a man for the first time, and now I know what the missing number in my equation has always been.

When lies are revealed, though, someone’s going to get stung . . .

About the Book:

One night with Reeve Hale wasn’t enough. I knew it when I kissed him, I knew it when I slept with him, and I was certain of it when I walked out of his motel room the very next day.

So when the shy, gorgeous man is introduced as our newest employee at Vino and Veritas, I can’t help but conjure up all the ridiculous ways to convince him to repeat that unforgettable night. Like asking him to be my fake boyfriend at my sister’s upcoming wedding.

Only, I didn’t expect him to say yes.

Playing pretend shouldn’t feel this real. Especially when Reeve is planning on leaving Vermont after the summer.

We agreed to one night. We negotiated a fake relationship. But I’m the one who broke our terms. I wasn’t supposed to fall in love and he was never supposed to be so unforgettable.

About the Book:

I swore I wouldn’t do this again. Mix sports, school, and sex. But right now the only thing standing between me and the NHL is six feet of frenemy packed into a pair of form-fitting jeans that have me thinking all kinds of things I shouldn’t. Mostly how to get him out of them.

I don’t just want Kolby. I need him. Because I’ve got to pass this theater class--yeah, I said theater--if I’m going to keep my spot on the team. When tutoring sessions turn into dates-not-dates over Shipley Cider at Vino and Veritas, I realize it’s going to be harder than I thought to keep my hands on my stick and off of Kolby. Worse, I think I might be falling for him. But I’m not ready for that. I want to keep this thing between us on the down-low for now.

But Kolby hates secrets. Especially his own . . .

About the Book:

My new roommate has the worst taste in men.

I mean, Murph’s special. He’s funny and flamboyant and full of life.

While I’m straight, even I can tell these guys aren’t good enough for him.

I had to yell at one date, toss another one out the door, and throw a beer in another’s face.

Kind of embarrassing, really. I don’t know what’s gotten into me.

I ask my sister what’s wrong with me and she says I’m jealous.

Jealous? Please. Me?

Come on.

Only thing is, I hate the thought of Murph kissing any guy. Ever.

Except, maybe ... me?

Undone is a contemporary m/m romance about a dreamy insurance agent that might not be as straight as he thinks, an adorable bartender who adds sparkle wherever he goes, and maybe one or two jokes about swords.
