From Ride Rough:

It was one of Maverick’s favorite dreams.

He and Alexa had gone up to Swallow Falls in Western Maryland for a weekend getaway and were staying in one of the mini cabins at the state park. After a day of hiking and swimming and picnicking outside, they’d come back to their cabin tired and ready to crash, but getting naked for showers had sidetracked them for hours. And even once they finally fell asleep, Maverick was hard and ready every time he woke up, and he took her again and again, falling asleep still buried inside her . . .

And fuck if he wasn’t ready right now.

He burrowed his face in Alexa’s soft hair and banded his arm around her stomach. His hand filled with the soft mound of her breast. He pulled her back against his chest and ground his erection against the swell of her ass.

“Maverick,” she moaned.

Hell, yeah. He nuzzled her neck, kissed her there, tasting and nipping and sucking. God, he needed in her. “Fuck, Alexa,” he whispered.

Her hand gripped his. “Maverick.”

He rolled her under him and crawled on top of her, his body falling into the cradle of her spread thighs.

“Uh, Maverick.”

He frowned and kissed her jaw, her cheek, her mouth.

It was the kiss that did it. Something wasn’t right. The memory playing out in his sleep-fogged mind didn’t feel like the reality confronting his physical senses. His eyes blinked open.

And he found himself lying on top of Alexa. Not in the cabin at Swallow Falls years before. In the gray morning light of his house. Her wide hazel eyes stared up at him.

He reared off of her in an instant. “Fuck,” he said, coming to stand by the couch. Alexa looked stunned—and so fucking sexy that Maverick barely resisted crawling back on top of her. She lay on her back in his clothes, on his couch, her knees drawn up and falling out, her hair sleep-mussed and sexy. Jesus. He adjusted himself, unable to hide his raging hard-on, and scrubbed at his face. “Goddamn dream. I’m sorry, Alexa. I didn’t mean to do that.”

“You . . . you were dreaming. Of me?” she whispered.

His gaze narrowed. “Don’t ask a question you don’t want the answer to.”

She swallowed and licked her lips. “What if I do want it? The answer,” she added.

Years of need and longing roared through Maverick like a drug he’d mainlined. His thoughts spilled out unfiltered. “Damnit, Al. You’re laying there in my clothes in my house with your thighs spread after I’ve just woken up holding you. My skin smells like you. And I’m sporting an erection because of you. Don’t fuck with me.” The words came out harsher than he intended, but she couldn’t play with him. Not on this. Not when he cared so much. Not when he wanted so much.

Her mouth dropped open and her chest rose and fell a little quicker. “I’m not playing a game. I want to know.”

Planting his hands on his hips, Maverick studied her. Her beautiful, languid body. Her pretty, open face. Her eyes, honest and free of pretense. He felt pulled in a million directions. Between wrong and right, between taking advantage and taking care, between giving in and opening himself up to a world of hurt. “I was dreaming of you. Of us. Up at Swallow Falls.”

“That night we—”

“Yes,” he growled.

“Maverick—”

Fuck.” He dropped his chin to his chest and closed his eyes. Trying to be bigger than his base needs. Trying to put her before himself. “Whatever is about to come out of your mouth is not a good idea.”

“Mav—”

“I mean it, Al—”

“Maverick!” she nearly yelled. “Listen to me.”

His gaze cut up to hers in time to see her sit up a little and take off her shirt. Well, his shirt. Then she laid back again, her eyes on him, drinking him in, inviting him in. “What if I do want it?” she whispered.

Something inside him snapped.

He was on her in a second. Body covering hers. Hands going to her warm skin. Mouth tasting her everywhere—her shoulder, her throat, her cheek. His chest pressed against her breasts, her hard nipples evident, her excitement palpable. And then his mouth found hers. On a triumphant groan, he claimed her, his lips sucking, his tongue penetrating. His big hand found her breast and kneaded at the soft mound.

And Alexa was right there with him. Moaning, kissing him, clutching on to him. Her thighs wrapped around his hips and her fingers twisted in his hair.

Bad idea bad idea such a fucking bad idea.

Why did bad ideas have to feel so good?

ARC Review: 4 1/2 stars for Top Shelf by Kelly Jamieson

Whether it’s a clutch goal or a cocktail, nothing beats “top shelf.” In this novel from the bestselling author of the Heller Brothers Hockey series, a fun-loving jock and an ambitious career woman mix business with pleasure.

Not only is Jared Rupp one of the stars of the NHL’s Chicago Aces, he’s also the owner of the Sin Bin, the after-hours hot spot where the whole team hangs out. Lately, Jared can’t take his eyes off the woman he’s hired to give the Bin a more modern feel: a sexy, sophisticated consultant who has carved out a niche updating drink menus. She’s as passionate about her career as Jared is about hockey—and yet he can’t help wondering what kind of cocktail she really wants.

In her line of work, Sidney Frayne is used to guys hitting on her in bars, but Jared gets her hot enough to burst into flames. When he’s wining and dining her, he’s sophisticated as hell; on the rink, he’s a testosterone-fueled powerhouse. Still, Sidney’s bitter divorce taught her to keep her emotions on ice. With her busy schedule—and Jared’s playboy reputation—she’s not sure she’s ready for a fling. Because if she lets Jared into her bed, she just may have to let him into her heart.

What I thought about Top Shelf

Trying to get her new business off the ground, Sydney Frayne happens to check out the Sin Bin and meets the sexy, gorgeous owner, Jared Rupp.  He's immediately taken with her and it doesn't take long for them to get horizontal.  There's a lot of heat between these two right from the start.

When I started reading this book, I was a bit worried that it would follow the usual romance formula and so I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did.  What intrigued me was that even though both Jared and Sydney insist that their bedroom activities are short-term and they aren't looking for a relationship, their words aren't enough to keep from falling for each other.

I particularly liked how Jared was the one to really fall hard for Sydney.  It was quite charming to have him be the one that realizes first that he's in love, and he has to figure out what to do about that, even though Sydney is holding firm on her "it's just sex" thinking.

The book is well-written and held my interest throughout.  There's some great hockey sequences too, which I love in a hockey romance. This was the first book I've read in this series and it worked quite well as a standalone.

Overall, I really enjoyed this romantic story between Jared and Sydney and even found myself going back to re-read parts of it after I finished.  If you are looking for a entertaining and enjoyable hockey romance, you just might like this one.

What I thought about Twisted Palace

This review might be a bit tough to write because I don't want to spoil any thing in this series or in this third installment of The Royals series from Erin Watt. The second book ended with two rather significant situations for Reed and Ella, and I was very curious to see how their story was going to play out.

Most of the book was like the previous books in the series, where lots happens at the beginning and the end and Twisted Palace stays true to the soap-opera feel of the previous books. I know I've said this before, but there was such a prominent feeling to the book I have to mention it again.  This entire series reminded me so much of watching the old soaps, Dallas and Dynasty, especially with all the action building toward the ending.

So while Reed deals with the fallout of the murder, Ella is dealing with the return of a long long relative. Both are having a terrible time of it, especially Reed because the stakes are so high and forces are trying to keep him away from Ella.  There's very little interaction with the other Royal siblings because the focus is all on Reed and Ella. There really is another side to Reed, and I found that I liked how his character had changed over the course of this series.

There's a bit of drama at the high school too, as news of Reed's and Ella's  predicament becomes known.  Nothing like some good old high school drama to keep things interesting, not to mention some setups for possible future books.
There's quite a few red herrings in Twisted Palace to keep readers guessing about who did the dirty deed to Callum's fiancee, although I have to admit, the reveal wasn't all that surprising for me. I did finish the book wanting more about this crazy family.

Overall, I did enjoy this book which concludes Ella and Reed's story and I would probably be interested in follow-up stories about other characters in the Royal family.  If you liked books one and two in this series, you will love this conclusion.

What I thought about Her Halloween Treat

If you are looking for a romance that has great banter and lots of heat, then look no further because Tiffany Reisz just a fabulous job in her new Men at Work series published by Harlequin Blaze.

Joey is on the way home for a family wedding when she decides to surprise her boyfriend of two years by dropping by unexpectedly.  Too bad she didn't let his wife know she was coming, but then again, she had no idea the guy she'd been dating was married.

Devastated, she takes her best friend's advice to get right back on the horse, so to speak, and hook up with the next available guy she meets.  Well, that happens to be Chris, a childhood friend who is all grown up now.  There's instant sparks here because not only do these two have a bit of history, Chris has been harboring a love for Joey.

There's a lot of internal turmoil as Joey tries to decide just how far she's willing to let her heart go, and there's lots of conflict between what she wants to do and what she things she should do.  Also, the pain of her ex-boyfriend's betrayal is still fresh. She's got lots of to consider, including a job offer that could keep her in the Pacific Northwest with Chris.  Talk about having a lot going on!

The banter between Chris and Joey is delightful, and I loved that this story is infused with Tiffany Reisz's humor, which I always enjoy. It was the highlight of the book for me.  There's plenty of sexy times too, which are also nicely done. There were a few slow spots for me, but your mileage may vary.

Overall, I really enjoyed Her Halloween Treat and I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.

Review: Rocky Mountain Devil (Six Pack Ranch #10) by Vivian Arend

The sweetest part of temptation is giving in…

Raphael (Angel) Coleman and Laurel Sitko were thick as thieves throughout their school years. The unlikely friendship between the rancher’s son and the preacher’s daughter might have gone unnoticed by most, but their shared laughter and connection were the best parts of Rafe's life growing up. Now that she’s returned to Rocky, he’s eager to move from friend to something far more intimate.

After three years away, Laurel’s ready to start over with the gorgeous cowboy who’s always owned a piece of her heart. But when her college ex shows up in town, she’s got a lot more to deal with than expected, including one suddenly possessive cowboy determined to protect her even as he tutors her through every sexual lesson in the book.

Desire flares hotter and hotter through stolen moments and willing seduction. But when tragedy strikes, Rafe’s left on shaky ground, his biggest fear now a reality that could tear them apart and rip forever from their grasp.

Will the connection forged by time be strong enough to see them through to the other side?

Warning: Friends to lovers equals sweet kisses heating to earth-shaking passion, mixed with laughter and tears. Get ready for hellos, farewells and goodbyes…some forever. Because everyone knows the only real secrets in a small town are the ones you’re willing to take to the grave.

What I thought About Rocky Mountain Devil

I love when a book can take me on "vacation" to a new place or time.  It's what I love about this series -- everytime I read one of the many books in this world, I feel like I'm transported to a a wonderful place in the Rockies.  Rocky Mountain Devil is no exception.

Rocky Mountain Devil is a friends-to-lover tale between rancher Rafe Coleman  and Laurel Sitko, preacher's daughter.  Their friendship started when they were kids and it isn't until Laurel is about to go away to school that they are honest about their feelings for each other. Rafe is a super stand-up guy, and he lets her go without any strings tying them together. There were a ton of reasons that I fell for Rafe in this story. He's just amazing.

I really liked Laurel too.  She does explore while she's away at college, and she ends up leaving school early. Not going to spoil why that happened for you, but she achieves a certain independence because of it. I found the religion aspect of this story interesting, mostly because it was not overdone.  Most of the drama in this story comes from Rafe's relationship with his parents.

I really loved this story about these childhood friends. There's a maturity to these young characters that made it very engaging, and carefree at the same time, which is some very nice writing. It's not just about great characters and a good plot, I love this author's writing. It pulls me into the story from the start.

Rocky Mountain Devil works very well as a standalone as do all the books in this series.

What I thought about Second Half

When I read the blurb for Second Half, I was intrigued by the depression angle in this story. So many people suffer from depression and I was curious about how this was going to be portrayed in this story. Depression isn't always easy to talk about.

The book opens showing just how happy Zoey and Derrick are together. They are making plans and promises for the future. Derrick is about to go pro and life is great...until Derrick pretty much dumps her after he gets to the pros without even bothering to talk to Zoey about it. He just disappears from her life.

The story picks up 8 years later, with Zoey running a foundation for young athletes in her father memory. When her friend Ben cancels on being a keynot speaker, he calls on Derrick to substitute for him, putting Zoey back in touch with the man who shredded her heart and head.

I have to say that I found Derrick to be a bit of a bully when he tries to push his way back into Zoey's life. He's relentless in the pursuit of her and basically wears her down. In the process, other secrets come out that have the potential to push Zoey into another serious depression. I have to admit, I was a bit appalled when why Derrick treated her that way is revealed, and I had a hard time believing those circumstances.

The writing had some slow spots that had me skimming instead of reading, maybe because I was more interested in the emotional aspects of this story instead of the sexual aspects. I would have liked it if the author had explored the emotional impact of Derrick coming back into Zoey's life a bit more.

There's a very nice cast of supporting characters who helped Zoey and I really liked that about the story.

So overall, a nice debut effort. The story could have been a little tighter and better paced with a little less sex. Your mileage may vary.
