ARC Review:Beyond Innocence by Kit Rocha

For years, Jared has existed on the fringes of both Eden society and Dallas O'Kane's Sector Four gang. He travels between these worlds, protected by his money and power--money he earned selling his body, and power that comes from knowing secrets. He's untouchable—until he starts a new life gathering intelligence for the O'Kanes.

Lili Fleming walked out of Sector Five with a gun, the bloodstained clothes on her back, and an icy determination to survive. She finds herself in a world where people live hard and love harder, and nothing's more terrifying than how much the O'Kanes wake her up, make her feel—especially Jared.

Emotion is a risk he can't afford, and a complication she doesn't need. But neither can resist the lust simmering between them, and the sparks that could either melt the ice around both their hearts…or get them killed. Because the only thing more dangerous than loving an O'Kane is loving a spy.

What I thought about Beyond Innocence
Beyond Innocence is the story of Jared and Lili Fleming. I've been curious about Jared since he had his date with Ace on the roof a few books back.  In Beyond Innocence we find out more about his early relationship with Ace and Gia and just what he's up to with Dallas. Without O'Kane ink on him, Jared makes the perfect spy. I loved the intrigue aspect of this story and the whole concept of his new business venture.

Lili Fleming is coming off years of abuse and drug addiction, but she's not weak.  She knows she needs to make herself useful to the O'Kanes, and she finds her niche with the help of new friend Rachel.  Being sheltered and drugged kept her feelings at bay and now that she's no longer numb from the drugs, she's confused, mostly about pleasure and sexual enjoyment. Well, she's definitely in the right Sector for an education.

Jared and Lili connect in a slow and seductive relationship. I liked that they danced a little before the main event, so to speak. Jared is a master at sex, and Lili hasn't a clue what it's like to feel, but she's willing to learn and trust.  I liked these two together, especially with how everything started out with them (oh, the piano) but somehow this relationship never achieved the ardor I was expecting.  There's a great scene when Rachel invites Jared and Lili over for dinner, and yet I thought something was missing in this story. Yes, there was lots of sex, but the passion between Jared and Lili could have burned a little brighter for me, especially after he wakes her up to feeling.

I've loved this series from the beginning and will continue to wait anxiously for each new romance and a visit with old friends from previous books in the series.  I liked Beyond Innocence, it just isn't my favorite in the series. It's still an exciting world to spend a few hours.
