None of that matters the day I walk into her classroom.

Or her bedroom.

What's more important than my grade?

Not failing her.

Review:Defending Their Mate: Part One (The Last Pack) by Moira Rogers

Defending Their Mate: Part One
Digital
September 2017

It’s been three months since her new pack saved Grace from captivity. They’re everything she never knew to expect as a werewolf–loyal, devoted, and fiercely protective. But her peace of mind is threatened by the arrival of her mating fever–and the crushing desire it brings.
The last time she went into heat, her wolf would accept none of her captors, and the thwarted need almost drove her mad. Now, she finds herself drawn to two very different wolves. Connor’s easy, affectionate nature makes her feel worshiped, sheltered. And Mac’s inner darkness calls to her own feral cravings…

Tragedy has left Mac emotionally locked away, unwilling to take a mate. It doesn’t matter that Grace sparks lust as well as his instincts. He’ll keep her safe, defend her–with his life, if necessary. But he can’t risk his heart.

Control over his wolf is all that matters to Connor–until Grace. But claiming the beauty is anything but simple. Falling for her could shatter the bond he shares with Mac, and cost him everything that’s kept him sane.

When Grace goes into heat, all bets are off. Because only one thing matters–soothing her fever.

What I thought about Defending Their Mate, Part 1

In Defending Their Mate, Grace is the new wolf in town. She's still attempting to understand her wolf side, and now that she's going into heat, she's also afraid she will harm her new pack mates.

Grace is drawn to Connor and Mac.  Connor is a sweetheart, and immediately takes to Grace and wants to take care of her.  Mac wants to take care of her too, although he's still worried about his past and whether he can give Grace everything she needs.  I loved how Grace and Mac have similar demons and the scene where they take to the woods together was really sweet.

I like this series.  It's a quick read, loaded with lots of sex if you are in the mood for that, and it's a shifter story that leans more toward the wolf than the man or woman. That's a nice twist and makes for a story with some basic emotions -- anger, lust, and playfulness.

Looking forward to Part 2 and 3.

Review: Half Past by Victoria Helen Stone

Half Past
Release date: September 19th

Hannah has always felt like a stranger in her own home. She’s about to find out why.

At forty-five, Hannah Smith is at a crossroads. That’s her spin on it. The reality is she’s divorced, jobless, and moving back to her family home in Iowa to keep an eye on her mother, who’s slipping into dementia.

Her return stirs up the same unnerving sense of disconnect Hannah has felt since childhood—always the odd girl out, the loner outshone by her two older sisters. Hannah knew the feelings of hurt would come back. But she never expected fear. Because when her mother looks into her eyes and whispers,
“You’re not my daughter,” Hannah is beginning to believe it’s not just the rambling of a confused woman.

It’s the truth.

Now Hannah’s following the trail of a family mystery to the dark coast of Big Sur, where years ago a lie was born—and buried. As frightened as she is to unearth it, Hannah knows this is the last chance she has before her past—and all its terrible secrets—are lost forever.

“Victoria Helen Stone renders the obsessions and weaknesses of her characters with scorching insight.”

What I thought about Half Past

Hannah has moved home to Iowa from Chicago to take care of her ailing mother and move on from her divorce.  She's dealing with a lot, especially with her mother who has dementia and doesn't recognize her.  Almost by accident Hannah finds some evidence that her family isn't quite what she thought and it opens up a huge can of worms that she feels compelled to investigate.

I don't want to say much more than this, because a big part of the charm of this story is discovering the truth right along with Hannah.  It's a nice little mystery that kept my interest throughout the book. But there's more!  What I adored about the circumstances is that it propels Hannah into some heavy duty soul searching of her own.

Hannah insecurities play out throughout the book. She's never felt "right" about who she is because she is so different from her sisters. Put that together with her almost-resolved divorce, she's got a lot to think about.  For me, I loved her internal dialogue, how she views her life and self. It never got too maudlin for me, and it was easy to see that Hannah was a strong person -- she just had some work to do for herself.  I loved where she ended up after all is said and done.

I thought the writing in this book was lovely. Everything flowed for me, and the touch of humor and sarcasm spoke to me. I really liked Hannah and applauded her willingness to find herself, no matter what she found out.   I may have had to wipe my eyes a little bit toward the end.  It was all good for me -- a great reading experience. Half Past is definitely on my favorites of 2017 list.

Welcome to Cavanagh, where rugby is king, Guinness is mandatory and family has nothing to do with blood.

Chasing Serenity – Book One
Graduate student Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. But she's learning to recover, until her ex-boyfriend returns to town, intent on making her life miserable. Declan Fraser hates her ex as much as Autumn does, but the last thing she needs is to put her trust in the hands of another man, especially one like Declan, but he's the only one who can help Autumn win an ill-advised bet that, if lost, could cost her more than she's willing to pay.

Behind the Pitch – A Serenity Series Novella
Expat Irish rugby player Declan Fraser only wanted to play the sport he loves. He didn’t want to be stuck in this middle-of-nowhere town at this all too quaint university. He didn’t want his team captain to be an entitled jackass and he sure as hell didn’t want to fall in love with graduate student Autumn McShane.

Finding Serenity – Book Two
Mollie Malone's mom skipped out on her. Her biker dad, always loose and easy with the law, still was able to make her feel loved, and to keep her safe. But thirteen years ago, when his luck finally ran out and he landed in prison, Mollie found herself a new family - a group of friends who know about the rotten roots of her family tree but accept her anyway. Now Mollie is finally able to see past graduation to a future that is bright and secure. But sometimes the past doesn't stay buried. Suddenly, there's a shadow behind every step Mollie takes. And it isn’t just the past that has Mollie’s life in upheaval. Former Marine Vaughn Winchester has his own secrets and Mollie wants to know each one.

What I thought about Cavanagh - Serenity Series Vol 1

What can I say about this series other than it ranks in my top ten favorite new adult series?  I first read this when it was released in 2014 and I still find myself going back and re-reading.  It's one of my comfort reads.

In Chasing Serenity, Autumn McShane has some seriously bad things happen to her, at the same time she meets Irish-hottie Declan Fraser.  There's no insta-love here, which I loved. It takes a while for Declan to get close, only to potentially lose it all over a very devastating secret.

I loved this story.  There was so much I didn't expect, and the friendship between the women is so lovely.  And Declan?  So yummy... even when he's in a bad way.

Finding Eden was chock-full of romance, suspense and has an action-packed storyline. I devoured this book in a few hours because I just couldn’t put it down. I’m totally hooked on this series.

I love these stories from fictional Cavanagh. It feels like home to me, too.  I also adore the friendship between Autumn, Mollie, Sayo and Layla. It how friendships should be.

Definitely recommended to romance readers, especially sports romance.

Claiming Serenity – Book Three
She left glitter in his AC vents. He put green dye in her conditioner. She buttered his bathroom floor, and he kidnapped her precious puppy. Layla Mullens hates Donovan Donley. His crude language, his wide shoulders, his crystal blue eyes…she hates that she can’t stop herself…from kissing him or landing in his bed. And Donovan Donley wants nothing more than to knock Layla off her princess pedestal. He hates her stuck up attitude and her soft, tempting lips. The white flags in their prank war have been lowered but their high stakes battle has just begun.

Catching Serenity – Book Four
It began with a look. Just one, thrown my way. A mad, dizzying rush of desire cracking across the patio, bouncing around my friends, ignoring everything but the heat bubbling between his eyes and mine. That’s when Quinn O’Malley came into my life. We were inevitable. We were senseless. He wrecked me. He saved me. I still haven’t recovered.

Sayo McIntyre didn’t want the complications that came with Quinn O’Malley. But life doesn’t care what we want. It gives us what we need. *This is a multi-media novel with illustrations from RN Laing.*

Beyond the Pitch– A Serenity Series Novella
One birth. One death. One promise of forever. Friendship means always being there. It means never giving up, but for Autumn, Sayo, Mollie and Layla, sometimes the demands become too much. Sometimes love gets lost and sometimes, we forget we aren’t all alone. When they return to Cavanagh to say goodbye, these four women, all struggling with their own stressful realities will have to decide just how much they’re willing to sacrifice for their friends and what that sacrifice will cost them.

What I thought about Cavanagh - Serenity Series Vol. 2

Eden Butler does an awesome job of creating unforgettable characters, and there are times when her dialogue gives me the chills, because it hits the right chords with me.

In Claiming Serenity, Donovan and Layla have had a love-to-hate-you relationship for years, and when it all turns to passion, they have a lot to sort out.  This is my favorite book in the series.  I love these two so much.  There's an amazing scene between Donovan and his dad that I think I've read at least 100 times.

Catching Serenity takes a more serious turn, but is still chock full of emotions. The illustrations add a little something that makes it special.

I devoured Beyond the Pitch as soon as I received this book, and it did not disappoint.  Written completely in Autumn's point of view, the reader gets a glimpse of adult life between Autumn and Declan and some updates from the others.  The story had me alternating between hating and loving Declan, for good reason and I'm still rolling it around in my head because I just love these characters so much.

This series made me an Eden Butler fan for life. Seriously.

About CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE:

Meet cute...

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry...

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot—chemistry he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself... just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener…just because she “gets” Spencer immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.

EXCERPT:
At the unexpected sight of Spence, Colbie startled hard. How was it that he was the one who needed glasses and yet she’d not seen him standing against the window? “No, I don’t kill a lot of people,” she said cautiously because she was wearing only a towel in front of a strange man. “But I’m happy to make an exception.”

He laughed, a rough rumble that was more than a little contagious but she controlled herself because, hello, she was once again dripping wet before the man who seemed to make her knees forget to hold her up.

“I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said and pushed off the wall to come close.

She froze, but he held up his hands like, I come in peace, and crouched at her feet to scoop up the clothes she hadn’t realized she’d dropped.

Leggings, a long forgiving tee, and the peach silk bra-and-panty set that hadn’t gotten so much as a blink from the TSA guy.

But it got one out of Spence. He also swallowed hard as she snatched them back from him.

“Hold on,” he said and caught her arm, pulling it toward him to look at her bleeding elbow.

“Sit,” he said and gently pushed her down to a weight bench. He vanished into the bathroom and came back out with a first aid kit.

It took him less than two minutes to clean and bandage the scrape. Then, easily balanced at her side on the balls of his feet, he did the same for both her knees, which she hadn’t noticed were also scraped up.

“You must’ve hit the brick coping as you fell in the fountain,” he said and let his thumb slide over the skin just above one bandaged knee.

She shivered, and not from the cold either. “Not going to kiss it better?” she heard herself ask before biting her tongue for running away with her good sense.

She’d raised her younger twin brothers. Scrappy, roughhouse wild animals, the both of them so there’d been plenty of injuries she’d kissed over the years.

But no one had ever kissed hers. Not surprising, since most of her injuries tended to be on the inside, where they didn’t show. Still, she was horrified she’d said anything at all. “I didn’t mean—” She broke off, frozen like a deer in the headlights as Spence slowly lowered his head, brushing his lips over the Band-Aid on her elbow, then her knees.

When he lifted his head, he pushed his glasses higher on his nose, those whiskey eyes warm and amused behind his lenses. “Better?”
