LONG WAY HOME Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Violet has always been expected to sit back and let the boys do all the saving.

It’s the code her father, a member of the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, raised her to live by. Yet when her dad is killed carrying out Terror business, Violet knows it’s up to her to do the saving. To protect herself, and her vulnerable younger brother, she needs to cut all ties with the club—including Chevy, the boy she’s known and loved her whole life.

But when a rival club comes after Violet, exposing old secrets and making new threats, she’s forced to question what she thought she knew about her father, the Reign of Terror, and what she thinks she wants. Which means re-evaluating everything: love, family, friends . . . and forgiveness.

Caught in the crosshairs between loyalty and freedom, Violet must decide whether old friends can be trusted—and if she’s strong enough to be the one person to save them all.

Excerpt:

CHEVY

The instructions of the English homework I didn’t do hangs out from the top of my folder: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both.

            Story of my life.

According to my football coach, I chose wrongly on the two crap paths I had to face last week. I just ran into Coach on the way to English, and he ripped into me for my sorry decision-making skills when it came to me choosing to stand up for the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club instead of a member of my football team.

I didn’t just get my ass chewed out, his tirade made me late for English with no tardy note. Which is great since my English teacher hates late students like I hate riding  my motorcycle in forty degree weather while it rains.

I round the corner, then peek through the small window on the door of my class. Ms. Whitlock stands in front of her desk in her patented white button-down shirt, gray pencil skirt, and dark-rimmed glasses. From the back row, my best friend Razor meets my eyes and shakes his head. Damn. That means she’s in one of her moods where she’s refusing to let anyone in.

I’m not a tail-tucked-between-my-legs type of guy, but this lady is one of the few who can reduce me to begging. If she doesn’t let me in, then she’ll mark me as absent, the front office will think I skipped, and that means I won’t be able to play at tonight’s football game.

The window rattles when I knock. The entire class turns their heads in my direction, but Ms. Whitlock doesn’t. The muscles in my neck tighten. She is one of the hardest core people I know and my grandfather is the president of a motorcycle club. That says something.

She starts for the white board and I knock on the door again. This time, Ms. Whitlock does look my way and she grants me the type of glare reserved for people who kick puppies. I got it. I’m late. I’m the scum of humanity, so let my ass in so I can play football.

There’s this guy in my club, Pigpen. He’s about the same age as Ms. Whitlock, late twenties, and he’s a walking hard-on for this woman even though she would never give him the time of day. He practically runs into walls when she’s around because he’s too focused on checking her out. I don’t see gorgeous—all I see is seriously pissed off and the person standing between me and playing.

Ms. Whitlock points at the clock over her desk. She’s telling me I can wait. If I’m lucky, she’ll open the door after the quiz that I’ll receive a zero on. If I’m not so lucky, she won’t open the door at all.

Two pathetic paths and I could only travel one. Nowhere in that stupid poem did it mention there was good and bad to both paths and that sometimes it’s best not to choose, but to set up camp at the fork and do nothing at all.

I slam my hand into the nearest locker, almost relishing the sting.

            “Feel better?”
A glance across the hallway and I freeze. Doesn’t matter how many times I see her in a day, she still manages to take my breath away.

ARC Review:Good Boy (Wags #1) by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

 Meet the Wags!
Good Boy (Wags #1)

Hosting her brother’s wedding for an MVP guest list is the challenge of Jess Canning’s life. Already the family screw-up, she can’t afford to fail. And nobody (nobody!) can learn of the colossal mistake she made with the best man during a weak moment last spring. It was wrong, and there will not be a repeat. Absolutely not. Even if he is the sexiest thing on two legs.

Blake Riley sees the wedding as fate’s gift to him. Jess is the maid of honor and he’s the best man? Let the games begin. So what if he’s facing a little (fine, a lot) of resistance? He just needs to convince the stubborn blonde that he’s really a good boy with a bad rap. Luckily, every professional hockey player knows that you’ve got to make an effort if you want to score.

But Jess has more pressing issues to deal with than sexy-times with a giant man-child. Such as: Will the ceremony start on time, even though someone got grandma drunk? Does glitter ever belong at a wedding? And is it wrong to murder the best man?

Warning: Do not read while sipping hot liquids. Or cold ones. Or while sitting anywhere laughter would be inappropriate. Contains hot but hilarious hockey players, puppies and a snarky pair of underwear.

What I thought about Good Boy

Oh, how I love a story that makes me laugh, makes me cry (just a little) and makes me so happy for the HEA!  Good Boy did all of that for me and more.

Jess Canning starts out in the story as a wedding planner. She's done an awesome job of planning her brother Jamie Canning's wedding to his partner Wes (the main characters in the Him / Us  duo by the same authors). She's even sort of managed to keep her past one-nighter with her new brother-in-law's teammate Blake Riley a secret, in spite of Blake wanting to have another night of fun.  But Jess is a little stressed out because she really wants to start a (another) new career and she's not sure how everyone is going to take it.

I love that these two just don't fall back into bed with each other.  Blake really has to woo Jess back into his life and bed, and that's a huge part of the fun in this book.  Blake's personality is effusive -- he's apt to get under your nerves at times and make you want to hug him until he calls "uncle" at others.  But underneath all of that personality is a man who is keeping a secret and nursing a betrayal that all comes to head near the end of the book.

The slow development of Jess and Blake's relationship takes a few hits when the word gets out that Blake is dating his teammate's sister -- which in most guys is a big no-no!  And he's got to first get Jess to admit they are more than just scratching an itch in bed.  It's a lot of fun as Blake wears Jess down little by little with his humor and his character, because under all that talk, Blake is really just a great guy.

I'm looking forward to more in this WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) series.  There are some really cute scenes with the WAGS as they support their partners on the ice, and I love that some of the action happens at the venue. I loved every last thing about Good Boy and five stars really isn't enough to say how much.

So if you are into sports romances and love a cute, humorous tale that will have you smiling and  laughing out loud, give Blake Riley a chance to make your day.  You won't be sorry!

Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: Accidentally On Purpose by Jill Shalvis

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes the next sexy, standalone novel in the Heartbreaker Bay series…

About ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE:

There's no such thing as a little in love . . .

Elle Wheaton's priorities: friends, career, and kick-ass shoes. Then there's the muscular wall of stubbornness that's security expert Archer Hunt—who comes before everything else. No point in telling Mr. "Feels-Free Zone" that, though. Elle will just see other men until she gets over Archer . . . which should only take a lifetime . . .

There's no such thing as a little in lust . . .

Archer's wanted the best for Elle ever since he sacrificed his law-enforcement career to save her. Their chemistry could start the next San Francisco earthquake and he craves her 24/7, but Archer doesn't want to be responsible for the damage. The alternative? Watch her go out with guys who aren't him . . .
There is such a thing as . . .

As far as Archer's concerned, nobody is good enough for Elle. But when he sets out to prove it by sabotaging her dates, she gets mad—and things get hot as hell. Now Archer has a new mission: prove to Elle that her perfect man has been here all along . . .

Excerpt

“My life isn’t normal,” she said with a shake of her head.
“Forget normal. Normal’s overrated. Now drink that gross green stuff you can’t survive without.”
“It’s just tea, you weirdo. And I could totally survive without it if I needed to.” She paused. “I just can’t guarantee anyone else’s safety.”
              “Exactly, so why take chances?”
Ell rolled her eyes. She was still taking what had happened last night personally. She knew everyone in this building, each and every business on the first and second floor and every tenant on the third and fourth floor, and she felt responsible for all of them.
And someone had been hurt on her watch. Unacceptable. “You do realize that the emergency exit system falls under security’s jurisdiction,” she said. “Which means the security company you hired failed us.”
Spence, following her line of thought, stopped looking so amused. He put down his coffee. “No, Elle.”
“Spence, a year ago now you sought me out for the general manager job. You put me in charge of covering your ass, which we both know I’m very good at. So I’m going to go discuss this matter with Archer, your head of security.”
He grimaced. “At least let me clear the building before you two go at each other.”
“There won’t be a fight.” At least not that she’d tell him about. “I’m simply doing my job and that includes managing one Archer Hunt.”
“Yes, technically,” Spence allowed. “But we both know that he answers to no one but himself and he certainly doesn’t consider you his boss. He doesn’t consider anyone his boss.”
Ell smiled and mainlined some more tea, the nectar of the gods as far as she was concerned. “His problem, not mine.”
Looking pained, Spence stood. “He’s not going to enjoy you going off on him this early half-cocked, Elle.”
              “Ask me if I care.”
“I care,” Spence said. “It’s too early to help you bury his body.”
Elle let out a short laugh. Her and Archer’s antagonistic attitude toward each other had been well documented. The thing was, Archer thought he ran the world, including her.

What I thought about Accidentally on Purpose

In this third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series, Jill Shalvis delivers a very sweet, sexy and sometimes tense romance between security specialist Archer Hunt and Elle Wheaton, property manager.  There's history smoldering between these two and everyone in their group of friends sees it but them.

Archer is the strong and mostly silent type.  A former cop, he's now running his own private security operations and sharing an office in the same building with Elle. They both have feelings for each other, but there's a whole tangle of past history that keeps them from being honest with each other.  Neither Archer nor Elle are good at communication, and both are trying very hard to protect their heart and each other. If only they would get out of their own way!

Elle has a bit of a checkered past, more from necessity than anything else and she's finally got her life turned around. She's working and going to school to get herself in a better place.  All of that gets challenged when her sister Morgan arrives in town, bringing trouble with her.

What I loved about this book was the slow dance between Archer and Elle as they come together and retreat when things get too close. It takes a while for Elle's guilt to take a backseat to her deep feelings for Archer, and I liked that. Archer has secrets he's keeping too, but mostly, he's just a guy in love and has no clue how to let Elle know how he really feels.

The gang of friends from the previous books in the series do a great job of helping them find their way to each other.  I thought it was adorable how they all could see the love, respect and caring between Archer and Elle, but they couldn't.

I love this series.  The characters are extremely likable, even when they are doing silly things, and their struggles are familiar.  The pacing of the story keeps things moving along and I devoured this in just two days. Jill Shalvis's writing just kept me turning the pages until the end.
