ARC Review:Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley

The ride of her life . . . Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.

Climb on and hold tight . . .
In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

What I thought about Ride Steady
It's been a long wait since the last Chaos book, and I was eager to get my greedy little hands on this book.  I love this series, it's probably my favorite of all the MC series that I read. There's something about these characters and their stories that just wrap around me like a warm blanket.  It's comfort reading, for sure.

In Ride Steady, we meet Joker.  If you've been reading this series, you might remember him from the night Shy and the boys had to save Tabby's best friend from becoming a porn star.  He's cold and hard, and even Tack is worried that someday he's going to blow.

But underneath all that anger he wears, Joker, aka Carson Steele, has a story.  Growing up with an abusive father, he made it through with the help of a few good people--a couple of neighbors and a teacher who recognized something in him. When he finally escapes his abuse, he eventually finds a path to Chaos at the automotive shop where he'd watch Tack and Rush he was younger.

Caressa Teodora was the high school cheerleader everyone wanted, and the girl the rich, connected quarterback got. Even so, she's still nice to everyone, including classmate Carson Steele.Years later, her life isn't so great but it starts looking up when Joker helps her out with an automotive emergency, giving them both a second chance at happiness.

What I love about this series is the underlying family theme that is so very strong in these stories. When the members of Chaos say they are brothers, they truly mean they are family, and that is demonstrated with how Tack and the boys handle Joker.  Tack takes him under his wing to tell him about redemption and the love of a good woman and he pulls out all the stops to help him and Caressa have their happily ever after. That's what I love about Tack -- he may be rough around the edges, but his heart is huge when it comes to his family and that family includes his brothers in Chaos. There are so many good Tack moments in this (and Shy, Tyra, Tabby, Elivra and Rush moments too) that I would buy this just for that.

All Carissa wants is family. She's dreamed of children and a husband to take care of, but that's not what she got. I was touched by her strength, in spite of being pretty much alone. When she gets a little help from Chaos, it's great to see her find her backbone and the love of a good man she deserves.

It's the characters that draw me into this series and Kristen Ashley's skill at constructing a story. Her writing is more comfortable than it is technically correct, and it's so easy to fall into this world. Ride Steady has tons of foreshadowing of things to come, and I'm hoping for some real action to happen in the upcoming books.  (Waiting patiently for Rush's book, too.)

Love this series.  While Shy is still my guy, Joker has some awesome qualities that you don't want to miss. I definitely recommend this MC series, especially if you like your MC's on the honorable side.

About the Author

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.  And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

EXCERPT:
Taking a deep breath, Beckett knocked on the door.
No answer.
He turned the knob, and the door opened.
“Go away,” came a strained voice.
Beckett poked his head through the opening. Kat sat in a ball in the corner, her legs pulled up to her chest, her arms hugging herself tight.
“Aw, Jesus, Beckett. Really?” Her face was splotchy and her eyes watery, though he didn’t see any tears.
Ten-to-one she was going through some adrenaline letdown right now, too. Which no doubt made it all worse. That shit could fuck you up even when you were used to how it left you feeling drained and shaky, by how all the stress you’d suppressed during the height of the crisis boomeranged twice over after the fact.
He came into the room, closed the door, and turned the lock for good measure. And then he crossed to Kat, scooped his arms under her knees and behind her back and lifted her up against him.
She smacked his chest. “Put me down.”
“No.” He moved to the edge of the bed.
“I don’t need this right now, Beckett. Put me down.”
“Yes, you do,” he said, sitting on the edge of the mattress. He pulled her face in against his throat and smoothed her hair back from her cheek. She trembled against him, just the littlest bit, her skin hot to the touch. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and hugged her tighter. “You did good, kid.”
Every one of her muscles went tight. Her hand fisted in his shirt. And her breath caught as she buried her face against his neck and shoulder.
Then Kat burst out crying.
And it was like being torn apart and put back together, all at once. He hated her pain, but he adored that she wasn’t hiding herself from him, and that she was letting him be there for her.
He didn’t shush her, or try to talk her down, or encourage her to dry her eyes. To be sure, her tears were like daggers in his heart—they hurt like fucking hell. But the only way she was going to feel better was to let this shit out. Ironic realization for him—he did actually see that. But just because you could see what was good for others didn’t mean you had the first goddamned idea how to apply those principles in your own life. And that was a problem for another time anyway.
What mattered right now was Kat. What mattered … was Kat.

ARC Review-5 Stars for Second Chance Summer by Jill Shalvis

Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it’s the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there’s an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile…

The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .

What I thought about Second Chance Summer
Lily is returning home to Colorado after some bad circumstances in California where she's lived for the last ten years.  But the inhabitants of Cedar Ridge remember her, especially Aiden Kincaid, the one guy she loved and left.

Aiden's a bit of a thrill seeker, working in a variety of dangerous jobs, fireman, search and rescue and helping his family run the local resort.  When Lily just happens to get a job at the resort, it's no wonder that they keep running into each other, and the attraction between them flares until they just have to give into it.

There's a lot of heat between these two when they get going, and I found both of these characters likable mostly because they were a little older, had a few experiences in their past, and had to make a decision on whether to take the happiness in front of them.

The supporting cast of Aiden's family and the beauty salon's employees really worked for me and some of the scenes made me laugh.  There's great sibling dialogue between Aiden and his brothers that I loved too.  LIke real family they meddle in each other's lives in a loving and meaningful way.  And there's a cute gag with underwear that made me smile.

So much to like in this book, it's going to be on my best of 2015 list. Everytime I read Jill Shalvis, I ask myself why I'm not reading more of her work.  Since this is the first book in this series, I'm definitely hooked and will be watching for more stories from Cedar Ridge.

Recommended for fans of contemporary romance.

Excerpt

Colton leaned toward me with his gaze locked onto mine. "I didn't know you in high school, but I knew of you."

"You did? I can't imagine it was anything interesting. I was boring as—"

"I never got the impression you were boring," he interrupted, and goodness, I could fall into those eyes and never come back out. So cheesy sounding, and if I saw it in one of my author's books, I'd redline the hell out of that, but now I got it. It was possible. "I just thought you were this pretty girl who sat two seats behind me in history class and was shy."

Several things occurred to me at once. He remembered that we shared history class together? Holy crap on a cracker. And he thought I'd been pretty? I was sure I probably weighed twenty pounds more back then and I wore these godawful glasses that were so trendy nowadays.

Colton was a flirt.

"Looking back, I wish I had the balls to talk to you then." He returned his attention to his crepe while my jaw hit the table. "But you were with Kevin and…yeah, that's not my style, you know?" He glanced in my direction. "You're going to eat the crepes, right?"

"Yeah," I murmured, cutting into one side. I forced myself to eat a bite, and it was like heaven just orgasmed in my mouth. Wow. That was inappropriate. I resisted a giggle. "What about you? You've been a cop this whole time?"

"Yep. It's what I always wanted to do. Started off as a deputy, then became a detective for the county before transferring to the city. I love working as a detective, but with my hours all over the place, Reece, my brother, has pretty much straight up adopted my dog. She doesn't even stay at my house anymore." He finished off the second crepe with an impressive quickness and then settled back against the chair, stretching out his long legs. "Almost got married."

Thank God I had just swallowed a piece of crepe because there was a good chance I would've choked. "Almost?"

"Was engaged." He grinned, and I felt my tummy dip in response. "Nicole and I were together for…hell." He glanced up at the ceiling, pursing his lips. "For about six years."

Holy crap, six years? That was a long time. I wondered if she was the woman I'd seen him with at the movies that one time, but that was like, maybe a year ago. "Got all the way down to planning the wedding date when we came to the realization that we wanted different things in life."

Dream of You - Teaser 3
What I thought about Dream Of You
In Dream of You, Abby leaves the bar after a disappointing date, only to run smack-dab into the middle of a crime.  When she's taken to the police station, one of the officers on her case is an old high-school acquaintance, one of the guys everyone wanted in high school -- remember them?  Yeah, the popular guys that dated the popular girls, the cheerleaders, the in-crowd.  When he shows up the next morning at her house with a sweet breakfast, Abby isn't quite sure what to think--he couldn't possibly be interested in her that way, could he?

Abby really has a tough time believing Colton could be interested in her.
The story is told from Abby's point of view, and the reader gets to experience all of her insecurities. Her experience with men is limited, her body image and self esteem fluctuate, and she just may end up sabotaging this budding relationship herself.

Dream of You works very well as a standalone story, and I'd forgotten how much I love this author's writing. When I read this, it made me want to go and read the rest of the Wait for You series. I love that Ms. Armentrout takes on this storyline, because I think that many women will relate to Abby's confidence issues. Colton's reactions to all of this also rang true for me, and it was easy to root for these two to work out their problems.  JLA knows how to write swoony guys you just die for as a reader.

The perfect size for a novella, Dream of You really worked for me and reminded me how much I just love this author's writing. While Abby did come off as a bit immature at times considering all she'd been through, I liked her character and found myself relating to her confidence issues. I'm thinking other readers will do the same.  Recommended.

Here is a never before scene excerpt from Cuba Undercover featuring Zach and Samantha from Alive at 5!
“Nicely done.” Zack Hunter was right beside her, tall as hell and commanding in his presence. “Sam sent me over to rescue you. But once again, looks like you can get out of an uncomfortable situation without much help.” He grinned down at her.

Zack’s confidence reminded Rebecca a lot of Antonio’s strength and power. Her heart fluttered at the thought of Antonio. But Zack was a more flirty kind of guy, winking and grinning, very unlike Antonio, who was always so intense and serious.

“Thanks.”

“We’re over here.” Zack gestured toward the door to another room.

“Did you have a chance to check on the case for me?” Her cheeks heated. She knew she shouldn’t be putting Sam’s fiancé on the spot. He was an agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and could get in trouble for talking to a reporter about information in an active case.

Instead of looking pissed, Zack just smiled. “Yes.”

Yes, and? “I know I shouldn’t ask you, but…”

“You’re going to anyway.” Zack winked at her. “Sam warned me you would. Here’s what I can tell you. Off the record, of course.”

“Of course.”

“The FBI’s kidnapping case is still open.” Zack casually led her through the crowd, nodding as they passed people, looking cool and in control. No wonder Sam lived for this guy. “Since we can only assume the other kidnapper, the one caught on tape throwing you in the van here in Tampa, is dead in the waters of Cuba, and Antonio Vega is still in Cuba, the FBI’s case will remain open for a while, but I wouldn’t worry about it.” Zack’s eyes crinkled at the corners. “You were clearly the victim in all of this.”

Was I? She exhaled. “Well, right, I’m not in trouble. I just don’t want Antonio to be either.”

Zack stopped dead in the middle of the room. “Really?”

Now her checks were flaming. One thing she’d left out of her documentary was her growing attraction to and relationship with Antonio. “Well, he has a family here now to support and…” In fact, she hadn’t shared all the details with Sam, either.

Zack threw up a hand. “Then your friend should stay in Cuba where our federal law officers have no jurisdiction.” Shaking his head, Zack motioned for her to move through the door first. “The man still masterminded a kidnapping that resulted in a murder.”

“He didn’t kidnap me, Zack.” Rebecca wished she had proof of what happened to both Ignado and Antonio, but even Esmeralda hadn’t been able to get info from inside Cuba. Rebecca furrowed her brow, a slight headache coming on.

“You okay?” Sam walked up, handing Rebecca a much-needed glass of white wine. “You look stunning in your Alexander McQueen.”

“Oh, right.” Rebecca glanced down at her black rented gown. “Thanks.” She’d forgotten how excited she’d been to wear it here tonight. That was before her trip to Cuba and before Antonio. “I’m fine. Thanks for the wine.” She raised the glass in salute to Sam, Dallas, and Zack, her friends all gathering around her in support. “Salud. To a great night.” She must concentrate on what was good right now.
Friends, fame, and food. Unlike in Cuba, there would always be plenty of food here.

Dallas rolled his eyes. “You get any happier, and that face is gonna fall off.”

She sighed. Dallas nailed her with the truth. Once again. “I’m just feeling a little guilty.” Why not tell Sam the truth, too? “Antonio is probably being roughed up in some Cuban jail cell, skinny and sick.”

She turned to look at the man who would definitely understand. “And Dallas, we’re here, drinking and being celebrated for exposing his poor family on national TV.” There. She’d said it. “And if Antonio ever comes back to America, I’m the reason he’ll probably be arrested.”

Zack Hunter cleared his throat. “You did nothing to seal that man’s fate. He’s a grown man who made his own decisions. You are a victim.”

Maybe in the beginning, but I became a willing participant. And now I miss Antonio. Damn it. She missed every damn thing about him. She especially missed the way Antonio made her question her every decision. He’d forced her to think. He’d been the force behind her growth. And she was a better person now for it. She felt enlightened.

What I thought about Hard to Let Go

Laura Kaye brings together the entire cast of characters from this series in this exciting conclusion to the Hard Ink series. As the team gets closer to putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, the stoic, silent, hot-headed Beckett Murda has a distraction--Katherine Rixey. He falls for Kat, and he falls hard. These two heat up the pages right off the bat, and wow, does it get steamy between them.

But there's still the team's reputation to restore and a mystery to solve, and while the guys work on finding the evidence they need, Kat is trying to deal with a serious situation on her own. (no, not gonna tell). When there's a mashup between these two worlds, dire circumstances might have you reaching for a tissue or two.  Personally, I love it when an author makes me fall into the story deep enough to have me shed a tear or two, and the ending to Hard To Let Go did a great job of ripping out my heart and putting it back together.

As a reader, it's fabulous when an author wraps up the series in a way that leaves you with a smile on your face and the urge to reread the series. Laura Kay delivers up a 5 star conclusion to this action-packed, sexy series.

HARD TO LET GO Excerpt:
Kat pushed Beckett so that his back rested against the couch as she straddled his lap. She cupped his face in her hands and got up close, her breasts against his chest, her forehead nearly touching his, her soft hair forming a curtain around them. Beckett’s heart beat like a bass drum. She kissed him.
A soft brush of skin on skin at first, and then a nibbling tug at his bottom lip that made his cock jerk where she sat on him. “I care if you live or die, Beckett. I care, a lot.”
He swallowed hard as that odd, warm pressure filled his chest again. “Why?” he asked, meeting those too-perceptive jade eyes.
“You really need me to spell it out?”
He really fucking did. Beckett nodded.
Kat kissed him. “Because you’re loyal, protective, and taking time away from your life to help my brother.” Another kiss. Beckett’s hands grasped her hips. “Because you’re smart, strategic, and a genius when it comes to gadgets and fixing things.” Kiss. “Because you keep trying to get Cy to let you pet him.” Kiss. “Because you’re gorgeous and sexy as hell.” Longer kiss. “And you fuck like a god.” Much longer, wetter, hotter kiss. “And because you called me ‘Angel.’”
Chest full, throat tight, heart pounding, Beckett kissed Kat on a groan, his thoughts struggling to process—to believe—that someone as beautiful and bright and together as Katherine Rixey could see all that in him when he couldn’t see most of it in himself. Hell, not even his parents had seen it.
Her arms wrapped around his neck and she sucked his tongue deep into her mouth, and Beckett was hard and aching and overwhelmed and more in need of being wanted than at any other moment in his life. And Kat gave that to him in spades. With her kisses. With her touch. With her desperate moans and grinding hips and pleading words. “I want you, Beckett. If we’re here for the night, I want you in me as deep and as hard and as often as you can. For just tonight, I don’t want to think about anything else but you.”
“Jesus, Kat,” he rasped, banding his arms around her back and pinning her to him. He devoured her mouth, sucked on her neck, bit the soft tendon that led to her shoulder. “I want that, too. But not here.”
“Why?” she moaned as his hands kneaded at her ass.
It was the silver lining in the cloud of being stuck here overnight. “Because for once, I finally have you all to myself with no need to hurry. I’m taking you to your bed, stripping you down, and spreading you out just like I said I would.”
