The army taught me discipline. Order. Control. None of that matters the day I walk into her classroom. Or her bedroom. What's more important than my grade? Not failing her.

What I thought about SOL

I was absolutely drawn to this book because of the cover and the title.  For some reason, it just called out to me.  I have not read this author before.

Trent and Degan and his sister Dani are childhood friends.  Dani has always stood out as a free spirit, and Trent has been in love with her forever. He only gets one opportunity to tell her how he feels -- and that is right before he and Degan leave for enlistment in the Army.

Fast forward four years later.  Trent is out of the Army and searching for Dani. He needs to find her for himself and to deliver a message from Degan. It takes a while to find her, but eventually Dani is located in Spain, teaching a course on Spanish translation that Trent enrolls in.

What follows is a reunion of large proportions as Trent is dealing with his own demons from his tour of duty. It's not a smooth reunion by any means, and his PTSD is only making things worse, but his desire to reunite with Dani and really tell her how he feels fuels his resolve to complete his mission.

I liked the premise of this story, but I did find that the story moved a little too slowly for me. There's a lot of grief in the pages, and I get that it may have impacted the pacing, but it's not a good thing when I find myself looking at the % counter on my e-reader.

There were also some aspects of Dani that bugged me. At times she seems like she should be from the 1960's, with her "free spirit" attitude and the clothes she wears. I would have found her more believable had she had a more updated look.

Dani and Trent's journey to their HEA is full of road blocks, mostly of Dani's making because she has some past she's dealing with too. I did find myself rooting for these two to make it work, so that's a good thing.  The subject matter of this book starts out quite dark and there's a nice transition to a more positive and bright future once Dani and Trent get their heads together.

Overall, I liked the story of these childhood friends, but some of the technical issues such as the pacing and Dani's characterization did take me out of the story at times. Your mileage may vary as they say. Sol is a very thoughtful and sometimes dark military romance that is balanced nicely with a brighter future.

An ARC was provided for review.

About the Author

Leslie McAdam is a California girl who loves romance, Little Dude, and well-defined abs. She lives in a drafty old farmhouse on a small orange tree farm in Southern California with her husband and two small children. Leslie always encourages her kids to be themselves – even if it means letting her daughter wear leopard print from head to toe. An avid reader from a young age, she will always trade watching TV for reading a book, unless it’s Top Gear. Or football. Leslie is employed by day but spends her nights writing about the men you fantasize about. She’s unapologetically sarcastic and notoriously terrible at comma placement (that’s what editors are for!). Always up for a laugh, Leslie tries to see humor in all things. When she’s not in the writing cave you’ll find her fangirling over Beck, camping with her family, or mixing up oil paints to depict her love of outdoors on canvas.
