Interview with Sarina & Sarah

I was so very excited to see another collaboration come across my review pile and I was lucky to be able to ask Sarina and Sarah a few questions regarding their latest release, Temporary, out today!

Sarah, you are a new author for me, and I see from your bio that you write for television too. Do you find that you approach television writing differently than romance novels? How would you compare writing for tv with novel writing?

Sarah: Well, TV writing is very collaborative, so in that respect I think it prepared me well for working with another writer. Scripts are all about dialogue and action, though - it’s up to the actor to convey what’s going on inside the character’s head, whereas books are about what goes on inside people as well as all the other stuff. As far as approaching things differently...the slate is much broader with my own work because I am not constrained by a G-rating or supplied storylines and well established characters. But there’s something awesome about seeing your script on screen once it goes into production. I love that I get to do both and feel very lucky.

I'm a huge fan of collaborative writing and I can't wait to jump into Temporary. How does an author from Vermont hook up with an author from Australia?

Sarah: We were email buddies before the author from Vermont had a genius idea and contacted the author from Australia and blew her mind by asking if she’d be interested in writing a book together. The author from Australia then proceeded to squeal and run around the house with excitement, before calming down enough to send a one word response: YES.

Sarina: And then the dork in Vermont drew a Venn Diagram of their overlapping skill sets for prep purposes. (I’m sure I still have that somewhere.) Collaborating is hard work and you have to go about it analytically. But I may have overshot.

Sarah: I freaking LOVED that Venn diagram. I felt in very safe hands!

(As a book nerd and math geek, thumbs up to the Venn diagram!)

Can you both talk a bit about your writing process for Temporary?

Sarah: Sarina was very much the old hand with collaboration, so I just followed her lead and asked lots of dumb questions. We started by spitballing settings, characters, and conflicts in Google Docs, then we worked on an outline incorporating all our ideas. Then we jumped in and started writing, passing the baton at the end of each working day.

Sarina: I thought I was a thorough plotter before I met Sarah. Turns out I’m not. But her penchant for thorough preparation made everything go super smoothly! I loved it.

The cover for Temporary is smokin hot! How much input were you able to give for the cover?

Sarah: ALL the input. We trawled through tons of shots of sexy couples until we found one that captured the dynamic of Callan and Grace. Then we worked with the cover artist Hang Le to get the setting right.

Sarina: So. Many. Photos. We looked at a million. I wish that part were easier but it’s just not.

Do you have any plans for future collaborations?

There’s a character in Temporary who really needs her own book… You’ll see!

What I thought about Temporary

Temporary is a slow burn romance between Grace, a financially-challenged temp worker who is also rearing her younger sister and rich playboy Callan. Grace has been given an opportunity to do a special assignment for her current employer and thinking it might lead her to a permanent position, she accepts the job to document the contents of her boss's deceased brother.

She's greeted by Callan, her boss's son, who has been estranged from the family for some time. Believe me, you'll understand right away why that estrangement occurred because Boss Vicky is really a handful.

At first glance, it would seem that Callan is just a thoughtless playboy, but his love for his deceased uncle lets you know that he's got a heart.

I really liked this story. It has a setup that I haven't seen before and I was pulled into the story right away. It was easy to see how Callan would be attracted to Grace, especially as she lovingly takes care of his uncle's belongings. It was only a matter of time for the heat to ignite between these two.

As expected, I didn't want to put it down until I reached "the end". There's some drama as one might expect from a romance, but it's not too much. I loved everything about this, especially the Australian angle.

Oh, and one more thing...as a book nerd, I adored the way this e-book was formatted from cover to cover. The cover is scorchin hot and the chapter ornaments at the start of each chapter made the reading experience feel just a little more special.

The elevator doors opened onto the fifth floor, Spence’s private floor. He guided Colbie off the elevator into a lobby with four doors. One led to the stairwell—which Elle came out of with Daisy Duke in tow, perfectly behaved now, of course.

Two more doors led to Spence’s private penthouse apartment and office. The last one opened directly into his gym. They went through that door, and while Elle flicked on lights and hit the alarm pad to enter his code, Spence heard Colbie gasp. He turned back quickly to find her staring in awe out the windows at the sun setting over the bay.

“Wow,” she breathed, still shaking but taking the time to eye the 180-degree vista of the city as she hugged herself in his jacket. He knew that from where she stood, she could see the rest of Cow Hollow, and past that, Fort Mason Park, the Marina Green, and the bay.

And he thought it was pretty wow too. He loved this view. It was one of the many reasons he’d bought the building in the first place.

I wouldn’t be able to work out to this view,” she said.

“Never gets old for me either.” Spence pulled out his phone to crank up the heat from his app before remembering he hadn’t dried the phone out yet. He had to actually use the control panel on the wall before going to her at the window. When he was stuck in his own head and unable to get anywhere with his work, he liked to stare out at the city that was more home to him than anywhere else had ever been.

“I love it,” she breathed. “I feel like from right here I can see all the way to the ends of the Earth.”

He knew what she meant. Out beyond the bay stretched the Pacific Ocean in all its deep-blue majesticness, clear to the gently curved horizon.

“I could so write to this view,” she went on in a hushed, amazed voice and turned to Elle, who was working out her thumbs—on her phone. “This is such a great building. I saw the pub downstairs. And the coffee shop and that cute reclaimed-wood furniture place. What else is there?”

“More shops and businesses,” Elle said, her thumbs still going, Daisy Duke at her side falling asleep standing up. “An eclectic mix on the first and second floors. Residential apartments on three and four.”

“I don’t suppose you have any apartments available for a short-term rental?” Colbie asked hopefully. “I’m only going to be here until Christmas Eve but would happily pay for the whole month to stay here.”

“Sorry,” Elle said. “But no.”

Spence met Elle’s gaze. She was the mother figure he didn’t need, the bossy-as-hell sister he’d never asked for, and his favorite and most important employee, but she was also a colossal pain in his ass. “What Elle means,” he said, “is that she doesn’t know of anything offhand but I’m sure she could check it out for you.”

“Hmm,” Elle said and nudged a trembling Colbie toward the shower area. “The restroom’s through that door. Fresh towels under the sink. Go get warmed up.”

Colbie, apparently too cold to further argue, nodded. She shut the door behind herself and they heard the lock click into place.

Cute, sexy, and smart.

“Are you kidding me?” Elle asked him, keeping her voice low.

“What?”

“Don’t ‘what’ me. You know what. You’re in the middle of saving the world right now for Clarissa, remember? So please tell me what the hell you think you’re doing.”

They heard the shower come on from inside the bathroom. “Look,” he said, trying to not picture Colbie stripping out of her clothes. “I got her into this mess. This is the least I can do.”

“No,” she said. “The least you could do is give her a hundred bucks for her trouble and send her on her way.”

“Cold, Elle, even for you.”

“Did you even get a last name on her? Or what she does for a living? Did you vet her in any way?”

“For what?” he asked. “I’m the one who ruined her day, not the other way around.”

“And how about the way she reacted to you even thinking about touching her phone? Did you notice that little red flag?”

“Of course. And I wouldn’t have let a stranger touch my phone either,” he said. “Hell, I barely let you touch it.”

“You know what I’m getting at,” she said. “Maybe she has something to hide, Spence.”

Or maybe she was in trouble. She’d denied that but he couldn’t help but think of her sweet eyes and the haunted depths he’d seen in them. “She needs a place to stay. Give her the empty furnished apartment I’m holding on the third floor.”

“We don’t do short-term rentals here. By your own decree.”

“We do today.”

There was a beat of silence. Since Elle was never silent, it had to be shock.

“You hold that open for a reason,” she finally said.

“Yeah, and so far Eddie’s refused to come in off the streets, hasn’t he?” Yet another problem he hadn’t been able to solve, which tightened the ever-present knot in his chest. “Make the rent cheap because she’s a struggling writer—she probably doesn’t have much money.”

Elle’s mouth fell open. “She’s a writer? Are you kidding me?”

“Not a reporter,” he said. “A fiction writer.”

Elle just continued to stare at him. “Are you even listening to yourself?”

“Look, I got her knocked into the fountain and it’s butt-ass cold out there, and she rolled with it.” He remembered Colbie’s throaty laugh and it made him smile even now. “She’d been a really good sport about it.”

“Maybe she had a good reason,” Elle said. “Maybe she was trying to get close to you. Hell, maybe she is a reporter and the whole thing’s a setup.”

“Come on,” he said. “She couldn’t have known Daisy Duke would send her sprawling into the fountain. This happened on my property—I’m making it right, end of story.”

“Fine.” Elle pulled out her phone, which had gone off four thousand times in the past four minutes. “But I’d like to remind your stubborn ass that you’ve not been yourself since this whole media thing. You need to be more cautious about connecting with a stranger who appeared basically out of nowhere.”

“She’s not running a con on me.”

“I’m not saying she is, but we both know you’ve been screwed over, twice if we’re counting, and you haven’t come to terms with the betrayal yet. So just be careful, okay? That’s all I’m saying.” She pointed at him. “And remember, you’re the smartest person in this building and probably the smartest person I’ll ever meet. Use your powers for good.”

He had to laugh. “Ditto.”

She blew out a sigh, gave him a quick hug, and then she and Daisy Duke were gone.

Spence let his smile slip as he walked across the room to check the thermostat again. He’d heard what Elle had to say, and he got it. He was still stinging, and he wasn’t himself. Added to that was the project for Clarissa. The unfinished project. It was critical work, more important than anything he’d ever done, and it was kicking his ass. He was on a deadline and could feel it breathing down his neck every single day that passed. He could afford no break in his concentration and efforts.

A problem now that 99 percent of his brain had short-circuited over the thought of Colbie naked in his shower…

He heard the water go off and he pictured her wrapping herself in his towel. Dripping wet… Shoving his hands in his pickets, he moved to the window and looked out at the view that had so impressed her. Once upon a time he couldn’t have imagined living in a place like this, much less owning it. But he’d conquered the shitty hand that life had dealt him.

And he’d do it again if he had to.

The bathroom door opened, and even better than h is fantasy, Colbie emerged from a cloud of steam, her willowy body wrapped in one of his towels, her exposed skin gleaming and dewy damp. Her hair had been piled on top of her head, but wavy strands had escaped, clinging to her neck and shoulders.

He couldn’t tear his gaze off of her. There was just something so uncalculated about her, so…natural and easy. She was like a beacon to him, which was both crazy and more than a little terrifying.

 What I thought about Raw Heat

When Emma's brother gets in deep with her boss Damien Larson, owner of the illegal poker club in Houston, she makes a deal with Damien to help her sleazy brother get clear of his obligations.  The deal involves giving herself to Damien for a month, after which they both go their separate ways.

Emma has been harboring a crush on Damien for a while. He's sexy and dark, and perhaps a bit cold and heartless to make this deal with sweet Emma. She wants her brother out of trouble, mostly to save her parents who have already paid for Benjamin's gambling problem, but she has trouble reconciling her feelings the longer she's with Damien. Alternating between wanting to experience Damien's charms up close and personal and feeling like their "relationship" is nothing more than a money deal, Emma can't stop how she responds to Damien.

I'm a huge fan of Cherrie Lynn's Ross Siblings series, and so I was very interested in seeing how I would like this new series.  I realize I'm coming late to the series as this is the third and last book about the Larson brothers, but I can say that I liked it and will be picking up the first two books in the series and fitting them (somehow) into my reading and reviewing schedule.

I liked Emma. She's got a soft heart. I liked Damien. It was easy to see how she could fall for him, yet feel guilty about how the circumstances of their being together came about.  And Damien wasn't fooling this reader as to his true feelings about Emma. From the very beginning it was clear there was some attraction to her before the ridiculous indecent proposal. They were so good together, especially when he was showing her new horizons in her sexuality. 

Even though Emma could be a bit frustrating when she bounced between wanting Damien and hating that he bought her for the month, I totally got how she was feeling.  She didn't want to fall for him -- but she did-- and then she had to really show him what he would be missing once their deal was up. I liked how the ending showed that Damien had a core of honor and goodness just like Emma.

I enjoyed Raw Heat.  The story flowed very well and kept my interest to the final pages.  There was plenty of scorching hot love scenes with some mild D/s if you are looking for that. It works well as a standalone and I will definitely be reading the first two books in the series.

What I thought about Sanctuary

After a devastating attack at her apartment, Liz Lewis needs to get out of town for a while, especially since she has a fairly good idea of the identity of her attacker. So she accepts help from her coworker Scott, who has a place outside the city where she can hide.

She doesn't expect a sullen farmer who isn't all that happy to have her around...at first.

The best part of Sanctuary was the enemies to friends to lovers story between Liz and Silas.  Even though it takes a bit for them to fall into bed together, the spark is clear from the beginning. It's only a matter of time.

What makes their relationship interesting is a bit of opposites attract and the fact that Liz likes to dominate during sex, and Silas is okay with being submissive, for the most part.  There are some real feelings developing between them that go beyond the bedroom and I was glad to have alternating points of view between Liz and Silas to understand just where they were coming from.

Complications arise as a result of Liz's attack and the measures she takes, and there are circumstances pertaining to Scott that provides conflict to the story. 

Overall, I really enjoyed this story.  It's a nice followup to the first book in the series. I loved the diversity, the strong female relationships, the straight-talk. I read this in less than a day because it held my interest. Most of all, the characters are fresh and different than what I normally get in a romance of this sort and I liked that very much about the story.

Looking forward to more in this series!

What I thought about Perfect Pitch

When the lead singer for Warning Sign Molly McIntire overhears a conversation she wasn't supposed to, she lets anger guide her decision to take on Lila, aka Dragon Lady.  Yeah, you might be thinking that doesn't end well, but when the dust settles, Molly ends up in a once-and-done that turns into a relationship.

One door may have just closed for Luc Moreau, but Molly's tantrum at Ripper Records opens another door for him. They have smokin hot chemistry when they sing together, and that even translates beyond the stage into the bedroom. 

Ethan Haywood has been interested in Molly for some time, and when they reconnect at a wedding, he knows it's not a one time thing for him. Luc and Molly's chemistry together doesn't detract from his feelings for Molly and he senses that Luc wants something more than Molly. Their one-night threesome turns into a whole lot more when their off the charts sex ingnites some real emotions.

As usual, Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliot have entertained me with a rocker story that has plenty of heat and emotions. Luc, Ethan and Molly really know how to get it on (I think I lost count of O's at one point) but for me the best part of their relationship was their individual realizations that they needed each other. Loved that part of the story.

Secondary to the love story is a suspense plot that is really looking like ... well, don't want to spoil, but it takes the ending of this book into a dark place, setting up for Mal's book, Raw Rhythm.  Can't wait to see who is behind it all!

So, overall, an entertaining, steamy rock and roll love story!  If you like rockstar romance, you should definitely be reading this series!
