What I thought about You Can Scream

Laurel Snow is back, still dealing with her crazy but brilliant sister and associates. Abigail is about to go on trial for killing her father when a sniper makes his presence known. But who is the target? Abigail or Laurel?

I just love this series. It's just so easy to fall into this story. Laurel is a extremely likable character and Abigail has enough crazy for just about everyone. There's always a complicated crime drama surrounding them.

And then there's Huck, the Fish and Game Captain and Laurel's colleague and more. This relationship has been building since the start of the series and really warmed my heart in You Can Scream. They are just so great together, whether solving a case or just spending time together.

Recommended for romantic suspense readers. Loved it!

 What I thought about One Cursed Rose

A contemporary romance with elements of beauty and the beast in the world of social media and information security.  Whew!  That's a mouthful!

Alana Beaumont is the heir to Aquarius Social and in order to survive the business environment she's got to merge with another company by way of arranged marriage.  Only Thorn Beathach (aka the beast) decides he's not going to let that happen because he wants her. If only he wasn't ill with some unknown illness.

There's some intricate world building here that is a mash up of traditional sort of paranormal elements and contemporary delivery via the web.  I found that to be fresh and kept me turning the pages.  In spite of Thorn being a bit creepy at the start, I did like Thorn and Alana together.

Overall, I thought there were interesting aspects of this dark crime family-type rivals-to-lovers romance. This is the first book in a series, so I'm curious as to where this is going to go.  There were some places where I was left scratching my head, so I hope these questions get answered in future installments.  A good start to the series.

What I thought about Frostbitten

2024 is off to a great start with this fabulous romantic suspense from Rebecca Zanetti!

Millicent Frost gets herself in hot water on a chance encounter between herself and lawyer Scott Terentson when she's discovered doing some undercover work.  She's planting some bugs when Scott arrives to visit with his client's soon-to-be ex-husband,Werner Dearth.

It's after Werner threatens Millie that she ends up in a really bad situation and needs a lawyer -- good thing that Scott is available.  These two have lots of chemistry together, and even though they start out with Millie not being too agreeable, their relationship develops nicely into something warm and wonderful in spite of all the bad things going on around them.

There's plenty of action too as Scott and Millie deal with someone coming after them, and Scott has to rely on his special forces training to keep Millie safe.  The pace of this story is absolutely fantastic -- I couldn't put this down until the final pages.  I love a strong story that pulls me in and keeps me interested all the way through, and Frostbitten did that for me.  I just loved it.

Millie and Scott are a terrific couple and there's plenty of steam between them, but what I liked the most about them was when they worked together to solve the mystery of who is after Millie. Their growing relationship made me believe in love and that's what I want in a contemporary romance.

This is part of a series, but can be read easily as a standalone.  I just loved Frostbitten and it's a great start to my 2024 reading list.

What I thought about You Can Die

Laurel Snow is back! I was so excited to read You Can Die. Laurel Snow is one of my favorite crime-fighters and when she is paired with Huck -- well I can't think of any other crime drama I would rather read!

In this third installment, Laurel once again has a crazy serial killer to uncover -- and her bizarro sister Abigail Crain is right in the middle of things once again. When Laurel's receptionist's ex-husband is found murdered, she must not only defend those around her from accusations of being the murderer, but also find the killer, which is where she focuses her big brain. Laurel begins an investigation into a case that has connections to her missing father, a councilman going for re-election and an entire firm of lawyers. There's lots for Laurel to unravel, and she does it brilliantly as usual. I have to say that I really love how Laurel works through the case, and although she takes some chances that could potentially get her in deep trouble in You Can Die, it's a good thing she has Huck around to give her protection. While I had a huge girl-crush on Laurel, I love it even more when she teams up with Huck and his wonderful dog.

Laurel does go up against her crazy sister Abigail in You Can Die, and her father makes a reappearance, causing quite a bit of havoc and red herrings to the case. My skin always crawls when Abigail is on the page -- she's just bad from so many different angles -- but it's a great cat-and-mouse game between the two sisters.

I devoured this book, not able to put it down until I hit the final pages. It's a great romantic suspense story and although the ending felt just a bit rushed, I loved every word of this story. I really need more of Laurel Snow and I hope there will be more to this series.

Review: Peril: Three Thrilling Tales of Taut Suspense by Kat Martin, Alexandra Ivy, and Rebecca Zanetti

What I thought about Peril

Three interconnected romantic suspense novella by Alexandra Ivy, Rebecca Zanetti and Kat Martin make up the anthology called Peril.  

There is a lot to like about this anthology.  First of all, it's just the right size with three stories.  I was impressed that all three stories captured a good level of romance in a few short pages.  I really liked the first story about a female cold case cop returning to the scene of her partner's shooting in an attempt to arrest his killer.  She also runs into a colleague who she had steamy times with ... once.  There was a nice level of yearning going on here and I really liked this story.  

In the second story, the criminals are on the loose and the heroine is in the midst of some real danger while enjoying the groveling of her ex.  And there's a good number of suspects and bad guys in the story to keep things interesting. It kept me guessing for a while and I did love the romantic aspects of this story.

The final novella takes place on a guest ranch, where the heroine is spending time to qualify for her inheritance, only to find not only does she appreciate nature, but she sure does like the rancher quite a bit too.  This might have been my favorite story of the three -- even though there is a bit of insta-love/lust, it made for a very sweet story.

Overall, this is a great choice if you are looking for a quick novella you can read in a day.  I liked that these stories can be read in a day, and I was interested enough in the connections that I wanted to read them all.  This is a very nice romantic suspense trio of novellas.

What I thought about A Vampire's Kiss

1001 Dark Nights presents A Vampire's Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti.  I love what the 1001 Dark Nights series represents as a means to sample a new series, or enjoy more of a series that you already love.  I'm fairly new to the Dark Protectors series from Rebecca Zanetti, so this was exactly what I was looking for and I wasn't disappointed.

Athan and Ivy have been mated for years, seeing each other once a year for a blood exchange that keeps them alive and well.  But as time goes by, blood isn't enough to keep Athan well -- he needs to mate with his mate so that he can continue to thrive.  But he'll have to convince Ivy that they need to consummate their relationship in that way.

Ivy is in a bit of a quandary -- she likes Athan and has wanted him sexually.  But she also likes to live her own life, which at the moment consists of some very dangerous behavior.  Between Ivy and Athan's enemies, things get very tense for a bit. 

This book is a quick read with lots of action and plenty of alpha goodness to enjoy.  I think this is a very interesting world of the dark protectors and with each book I read, I am more enamored of the series.  It's wicked sexy and just a lot of fun.  I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to getting caught up with this series.

 What I thought about You Can Hide

When I read You Can Run, the first book in this series earlier this year, I absolutely loved Laurel Snow and Huck Rivers.  They are a great crime-solving team and I was left wanting more.  Well the day has come and I finished You can Hide yesterday and I'm still sighing over how much I love this series.

Expert FBI profiler and genius Laurel Snow is back in town with a new serial killer who is leaving brutally murdered women in the snow.  He's got a calling card as well -- he leaves Black Dahlia's all over the place to commemorate the crime.  

As the team unravels the clues, more murders are committed.  And Laurel's creepy half-sister is involved.  That can't be good, because creepy Dr. Craine is one of the creepiest!  This is a character that made my skin crawl every time she was on page.  

I don't want to spoil the serial murder case for you, although I had a good idea of the culprit somewhere around the halfway mark.  It's the motivation for the murders that ties everything together in a deliciously sinister way and sets up the story for more the come.

I adored Laurel's examination into her own life and her relationship with Huck, which is really the shining star on the top of the cake for me as a romance reader.  I just love these two together, and their conflicts in this installment were very real. There's so much between these two characters that is unsaid, which makes me want more, more, more of them!  I can hardly wait for the next installment in the series.

So overall, great characters. Even the secondary characters piqued my interest, especially the new IT analyst, Nestor.  I hope he gets some more page time.  And the older detectives that are also part of the team are also an integral part of the crime-fighting element.  The creepy Dr. Craine is worth the price of the book for sure. The serial-killer case was well-crafted with just enough clues for this reader to figure out what was going on right along with the team.  I just love everything about this series.

What I thought about Garrett's Destiny

I'm a new reader to this series. I have recently found and loved this author's romantic suspense titles, and so I thought I would check out her paranormal romantic suspense in this dark protectors series.   I was not disappointed.

 

Garrett Kayrs is a vampire-demon hybrid looking for his mate.  He has a vision of what this mate looks like and finds her in Destiny Applegate.  He doesn't quite understand why he's attracted to her as she is human.  Garrett is an alpha male character and he models the typical alpha behaviors if you like that sort of character.  He does have other redeeming qualities too.

 

Destiny is dealing with some health issues that have her grabbing every moment she can.  She recognizes Garrett from a dream and there's a mutual attraction, so she climbs on Garrett's motorcycle to experience what he has to offer.

I don't want to spoil anything but I can say that I did like the pace of the story (it moves!) and the twisty sort of plot which features some unexpected moments and situations.  I love that in any story and it was really terrific here.

While this was the first experience with this world, I'm totally hooked and want more!  The good news is that there are plenty of books in this world to get caught up with.  

There's plenty of steam and emotional content in this story which also made this reader happy.  While I think it would have helped to have more background in this world, I was able to read this standalone, although I would recommend getting invested in this series from the beginning.

Overall, this is an intriguing paranormal romantic suspense that I enjoyed very much. The characters are interesting, the pace of the plot moves quickly and it left me wanting more.

 What I thought about Unforgiven

Gemma Falls is on the run, hiding from someone with good reason.  When she takes a teaching job at DC University, she meets Jethro Hanson, a gorgeous professor with a British accent who just won't leave her alone.  He's got a past he's running from too.

When danger crosses both of their paths, Gemma and Jethro must learn to trust each other if they are going to survive.  

The bad guys are revealed early on in this story, and it becomes a tale of putting them away before they can get to Gemma and her daughter.  It takes all of Jethro's colleagues and plenty of  tenacity on the part of Gemma to thwart the killer coming after them.

I really liked this.  There was plenty of action, and sweet alphas, Even thought the killer is clear, there are many questions to be answered. Much of the story focuses a lot on the relationship between Jethro and Gemma and Trudy and I liked that. They were all looking for family and they both found it. 

Unforgiven is a nice little thriller with a lovely special-ops style romance. It's a well crafted, standalone romantic suspense that I enjoyed.

 What I thought about You Can Run

Wow! What a ride!  It's been a long time since story had me this engaged and will definitely be on my best of 2022 list. I was hooked right into this story from the opening pages.

FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow is an expert profiler.  When her mother asks her to come home because her uncle is under suspicion of terrible crimes, Laurel finds herself right in the middle of a active serial killer investigation that brings new revelations in her personal life. More about that in a minute.

Huck Rivers wants to live a solitary life as a expert guide and wilderness rescue.  He's not big on peopling but when Laurel comes to town and needs his help to find the serial killer, he is intrigued with the special agent.  There's a whole lot of spark between these two and I especially liked how the relationship between these two developed.  It seemed like things were going in the right direction by the end of this book, so I'm hoping there will be more of Laurel and Huck in future books.  They really leap from the pages when they are working on the case together.

I loved Laurel's journey to understanding more about herself. The creepy Dr. Craine was an interesting part of the story that left other loose ends needing resolutions. I'm not sure if I want to see her again, but I like that all of the characters had a big impact on this reader. 

 So overall, I found everything to be perfect -- the story, the pacing, the characters, the way the it kept me guessing until the very end -- and I can't wait for more.  This is my first title I've read from this author and I am hooked.  I want more Laurel Snow!
