Review: Fallen Heir (The Royals #4) by Erin Watt

These Royals will ruin you.

Easton Royal has it all: looks, money, intelligence. His goal in life is to have as much fun as possible. He never thinks about the consequences because he doesn’t have to.

Until Hartley Wright appears, shaking up his easy life. She’s the one girl who’s said no, despite being attracted to him. Easton can’t figure her out and that makes her all the more irresistible.

Hartley doesn’t want him. She says he needs to grow up.

She might be right.

Rivals. Rules. Regrets. For the first time in Easton’s life, wearing a Royal crown isn’t enough. He’s about to learn that the higher you start, the harder you fall.

Warning: This book has a cliffhanger. The story will be resolved in Cracked Kingdom, due out January 2018.

What I thought about Fallen Heir

Wow! That was some ending!

Fallen Heir is Easton Royal's book.  With Reed and Gideon away at college, he's now the oldest at home.  He's led a life of privilege and money gets him out of any of his many situations that usually involve sex and / or drinking. He's cocky and has a fairly high opinion of himself -- at least until he strips away some of his bravado and we get to see the real Easton.

Easton becomes interested in Hartley, the new girl at school.  It starts off more as a challenge because Hartley really doesn't want anything to do with Easton. But he slowly worms his way into her heart.

The book is entirely in Easton's voice, which I liked.  I actually found myself liking Easton, even though I wanted to whack some sense into him most if the time and he kept repeating the same  mistakes. But when he showed some vulnerability, especially with Hartley,  I really liked him.

As for Hartley, she got on my nerves at times mostly because I didn't quite believe her circumstances, which were very sad when revealed. She did have some backbone and I did like her self sufficiency and sense of honor, especially in contrast with all the morally bankrupt adults in the book.

This book follows a similar pacing as the previous books in the series.  There's a very slow build to the story and at times I found myself getting frustrated with that, but then toward the end the pace speeds up and hits like a freight train.  In Fallen Heir, I never saw that train coming and I absolutely loved that about this story!  I was blown away by the cliffhanger ending (it's a doozy) and now I can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

Loved the big bang ending, so I'm giving this 4 1/2 stars in spite of the slow build. This really is not a standalone read, and I do recommend reading the first three books in the series before tackling Fallen Heir.  If you are a fan of intrigue among the wealthy, then you may like this series.

Review: When It's Real by Erin Watt

Available Now!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.

Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.

Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of "normal." Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley's team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?

What I thought about When It's Real

Oakley Ford needs a new image if he wants to work with the producer that could take him to a new level. When his handlers see a picture of Vaughn Bennett, she seems like the perfect girl to clean up his bad boy reputation.

Money is a powerful motivator and Vaughn decides to go along with the plan. She becomes almost as managed as Oakley, plus she has to actually spend time with the rockstar's humongous ego.  Things start out a bit rocky between Vaughn and Oakley, but as they get to know each other, things change between them.

There aren't many twists in this story, but it didn't matter.  It was the gradual development of the relationship between Vaughn and Oakley that had me loving both of these characters, which was a feat in itself, since Oakley reminded me of an actual pop star I'm not fond of.  But by the end of When It's Real, I really had a good old fashioned crush on Oakley myself.  When everything falls to pieces for Oak and Vaughn, I felt it.  My only complaint was that the ending was a bit abrupt, but I loved it and what it represented regarding this two young adults.

When It's Real is a very sweet new adult title with a very cute and satisfying (fr)enemies-to-lovers romance that kept my interest. It left me with a smile on my face, and that is a very good thing.

What I thought about Twisted Palace

This review might be a bit tough to write because I don't want to spoil any thing in this series or in this third installment of The Royals series from Erin Watt. The second book ended with two rather significant situations for Reed and Ella, and I was very curious to see how their story was going to play out.

Most of the book was like the previous books in the series, where lots happens at the beginning and the end and Twisted Palace stays true to the soap-opera feel of the previous books. I know I've said this before, but there was such a prominent feeling to the book I have to mention it again.  This entire series reminded me so much of watching the old soaps, Dallas and Dynasty, especially with all the action building toward the ending.

So while Reed deals with the fallout of the murder, Ella is dealing with the return of a long long relative. Both are having a terrible time of it, especially Reed because the stakes are so high and forces are trying to keep him away from Ella.  There's very little interaction with the other Royal siblings because the focus is all on Reed and Ella. There really is another side to Reed, and I found that I liked how his character had changed over the course of this series.

There's a bit of drama at the high school too, as news of Reed's and Ella's  predicament becomes known.  Nothing like some good old high school drama to keep things interesting, not to mention some setups for possible future books.
There's quite a few red herrings in Twisted Palace to keep readers guessing about who did the dirty deed to Callum's fiancee, although I have to admit, the reveal wasn't all that surprising for me. I did finish the book wanting more about this crazy family.

Overall, I did enjoy this book which concludes Ella and Reed's story and I would probably be interested in follow-up stories about other characters in the Royal family.  If you liked books one and two in this series, you will love this conclusion.

Review:Broken Prince by Erin Watt

These Royals will ruin you…

From wharf fights and school brawls to crumbling lives inside glittery mansions, one guy tries to save himself.

Reed Royal has it all—looks, status, money. The girls at his elite prep school line up to date him, the guys want to be him, but Reed never gave a damn about anyone but his family until Ella Harper walked into his life.

What started off as burning resentment and the need to make his father’s new ward suffer turned into something else entirely—keep Ella close. Keep Ella safe. But when one foolish mistake drives her out of Reed’s arms and brings chaos to the Royal household, Reed’s entire world begins to fall apart around him.

Ella doesn’t want him anymore. She says they’ll only destroy each other.

She might be right.

Secrets. Betrayal. Enemies. It’s like nothing Reed has ever dealt with before, and if he’s going to win back his princess, he’ll need to prove himself Royally worthy.

What I thought about Broken Prince

In Book Two of The Royals series by Erin Watt, Reed Royal must deal with Ella's disappearance and Brooke's deceptions. Lot's of only-the-rich-can-get-away-with-it stuff coming your way in Broken Prince.

The story alternates between Reed's point of view and Ella's point of view and I liked that we got inside the head of one of the Royals, because they are one messed up family.

Ella's return home is stressed out, and she's not about to forgive Reed for his lies and deceptions.  I really liked that about her. Complicating things is the fact that the Royal boys seemed to have lost favor at the prep school and Ella has some new and returning frenemies to fight.  It's Mean Girls and Fight Club all wrapped up into one story.

It felt like not much happened in Broken Prince, but then again, there are some twists and turns that will have you thinking everyone this family touches better watch out.  The Royals will ruin you is the tagline and the authors really show just how low the Royal boys will go. Ella does her utmost to stay out of their path, but falls to Reed's charm in one of the brighter moments in this dark series.

There's a cliffhanger that will have some readers salivating for more in this series -- maybe you'll see it coming, because one thing is for certain, and that's these authors aren't going to leave things all hearts and unicorns for Ella.

I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about this series.  It has captured my interest, in the same way the old evening soap operas like Dallas and Dynasty did back in their day.  There are some depraved people in this story and the crazy things they do keep me turning the pages. I'm hoping there's more to it though, and I'm waiting to see how things are all going to come together (or fall apart) by the end of this series.

So another interesting installment with some predictable scenes and some that are a bit of a surprise. Ella was terrific, and I liked Callum a whole lot more in this one too, at least he shows some backbone as a father. I liked Reed too -- I'm not sure about the rest of the family though!

Looking forward to seeing how this all wraps up.

Review:Paper Princess (The Royals #1) by Erin Watt

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

What I thought about Paper Princess

So Ella gets rescued by wealthy Callum Royal and suddenly finds herself with money, a place to live, and five gorgeous brothers that don't miss an opportunity to make her feel unwelcome.  The circumstances are some kind of screwed up, but I'm not entirely sure how. It seems like there is a whole lot more to the story than we get in this first installment. Some of it seems a bit unlikely to me, but I'm willing to go along with it.

Ella is a nice girl.  She's done what she's had to do in order to take care of her sick mother. Her background is exploited by her classmates and just about everyone she comes in contact with in this world, but she sees the value of staying and what it can do for her future.  She's determined to get herself a better life, and I liked her a lot.  I hated when the Royal boys gave her a hard time, after all, she didn't ask for this, and she didn't ask for the insane attraction she has for one of her "brothers", Reed Royal.  He runs hot, hot, hot and cold toward Ella. I wasn't always convinced it was because he was trying to protect her from himself, but he did manage to step up a time or two.

Overall, the book is very engaging and the writing is top-notch as I would expect from Elle Kennedy and Jen Frederick. I wanted to know what was going to happen -- I needed to know! The story pacing was great and it kept me turning the pages until I reached the end that had me wondering WTF just happened. So that is a definite plus to this story.

As for the rest, I'm just not entirely sure how I feel about this book. I liked it, but...there are things that bugged me, like Callum and his girlfriend (big time), the boys animosity toward Ella, and her mysterious father -- I'm hoping there will be a payoff somewhere down the line.   There is a lot of potential in this series at this point, and I sure hope the authors take advantage of that and give the reader something that is really WOW!

That being said, it was an interesting read, and I'm looking forward to more of this story!
