I’d been fooled once by the promise of quiet nights and
serene days in the sunshine. I believed the brochure when it said I could leave
my worries at home and escape to a simpler, quieter kind of life. I let myself
be lured in by the picturesque landscape and stunning mountains. I foolishly
fell prey to the temptation of leaving my current set of troubles behind in San
Francisco while I hid away in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming.
I now knew firsthand the glossy brochure that brought me to
Wyoming the first time was nothing more than a bunch of pretty, packaged lies.
I knew the bar brawl erupting in front of me was hardly the worst thing that
could happen here. In fact, the level of bloodshed and violence was child’s
play compared to what I’d witnessed the last time I’d stepped foot in this
small, quaint town. Well, I hadn’t really been in Sheridan last time I was
here. I’d spent most of my time in the backwoods that surrounded the Warner
brothers’ ranch, which was still a good forty-five minutes outside of this tiny
town. The ranch was where I was currently trying to get to so I could see my
best friend.

I persuaded myself into believing what I needed to heal was space and solitude. I held onto that until time passed and I was still a mess. I was sick of my own company and of hiding from everything I was feeling. I was the one who always went out of my way to fix everyone else around me, it wasn’t exactly a shock to learn I didn’t have the skills to repair myself. I spent my days helping others focus on their goals, on doing better and achieving more, so I didn’t have to think about the lack of any ambition of my own. I turned thirty at the end of the year and I was still trying to figure out what and who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d been aimless for a long time; the only direction in my life come from the fact I knew all the way down to my bones that I had to go back to Wyoming and face off with Sutton Warner.

What I thought about Shelter
Emrys Santos is still dealing with the aftermath of the vacation-gone-wrong. Her scars are visible as well as hidden, and she finds herself heading back to Wyoming to resolve unfinished business with the man who saved her -- Sutton Warner.
Sutton isn't doing very well himself. He's lost his confidence and more after the almost-fatal experience. Booze and pain killers are the only things keeping his demons at bay and not all that well. It's a good thing that Emrys shows up to bring him back from the edge.
These two are scorching hot together. There's an attraction between them that they didn't get to explore when they first met and they make up for lost time! The heat level is high, and there's a barn scene that is one of the hottest of the year for me, and that's after reading over 150 romance titles.
Everything takes a whole new turn with a murder that has the town pointing the finger at Sutton, followed by a kidnapping that has the potential for super serious consequences for all the Warner family. I adore the suspense elements in this series, and loved everything about this part of the story, even though the identity of the the responsible party was easy to guess.
This book had a bit of a different feel to it than the first book in the series, mostly because both main character's point of view is represented. Emrys and Sutton are complicated characters, and it is when they come together that they find they can open up and let go. I really liked the emotional impact of their union and was glad that I got to see what was going on with both characters.
I really love this series. Whenever a new book from an author has me craving more and running back for re-reads of all my favorite titles from them, I know it's a winner. This series pulled me out of a bit of a romance reading slump and I think that's a big deal.
If you like romantic suspense, I think you will like this series. I also recommend starting with Retreat, but Shelter can be read as a standalone. You'll enjoy it more with the background provided by the first book in the series.
And the next book! Gah! There's a nice setup at the end of Shelter for the next book in the series. Cannot wait!
