Review: Unwritten (The Woodlands #5) by Jen Frederick

After years of trying to hit it big with his band, Adam Rees’ dream is finally about to come true. A new lead singer brings with him a hot tour invite, but with a catch—his sister has to come with them. Despite an off-limits edict, Adam is instantly attracted the smart and beautiful Landry. But if he wants to claim his woman, it might be at the expense of all his ambitions.

Landry Olsen has had success at every stage of her life, except when it comes to men. She’s put her heart on the shelf, but one look at Adam and she’s a goner. The hot rocker heats her from the inside out, and she wants him as much as he wants her. The only thing standing in their way of their happiness is Landry’s brother—she ruined his musical hopes before, and she won’t do it again. Even if it means saying no to the one guy who makes her believe in love again.

There’s no fruit more tempting than the forbidden kind…

What I thought about Unwritten

Unwritten is the story of Adam, guitarist and founding member of FMK and Landry, sister to FMK vocalist Davis.  So right there is one of the problems, the unwritten rule of never going for a friend's sister. But that doesn't stop Adam.  When he sees Landry, he's immediately smitten and so is she.

When Landry ends up going on tour with the band for two months, it puts her in close proximity to her fantasies. She strikes up a friendship with Adam while they both tell themselves they can't go "there" because it's going to mess up everything with the band.  Of course they eventually give into each other and have to deal with whether they should tell Davis or not.

I found the first part of Unwritten to be a bit too slow of a pace for me.  I liked that Adam and Landry became friends first, but things seemed to drag for the first half of this book.  Things got much better once Adam and Landry follow their hearts (and other integral body parts) and decide to take their friendship to a new level. There's plenty of requisite steamy sex scenes, piercings and sexy lingerie

They've still got to deal with Davis finding out and then there's that whole reason that Landry is on tour with FMK.  It all comes to a head in the final third of the book.  There's also some songwriting drama that was interesting, especially Adam's reasons for his behavior which would have been a kick-ass scene had he actually admitted all of that to the band instead of just Landry.

Overall, I liked Unwritten, especially the second half of the book.  While it's a classic rock-star tale and there weren't many surprises, there were elements that kept it fresh.
