“No one knows .”
His tone was bleak, the words tripping over each other.
“No one will,” she whispered, though that wasn’t her place to promise. “I’ll keep it a secret.” His laugh was a harsh bark. “What am I supposed to do? Just trust you?”
Yes.” The adrenaline in her blood spiked, and she leaned in closer, driven to comfort and consume him. “I’m very good at secrets.”
He shook his head. “You don’t— ”
She had no idea what he was going to say, because she settled her lips over his. It was a ridiculous urge, born of panic and desperation and a deep-seated drive to calm him. Their lips fit together perfectly, and she moved them over his, tasting the faint hint of mint in his mouth.
Finally. Finally. Now she knew what kissing would feel like.
Like perfection.
He froze for a second, but then a growl came from deep in his chest. He tightened his hold on her, crushed her close, and kissed her back.

What I thought about Hurts to Love You

In this last installment of the Chandler/Kane saga, Evangaline Chandler, younger sister of Nicholas Chandler is crushing on Gabriel Hunter, tattoo artist and son of the Kane family housekeeper. There's a significant age difference between them, and since Gabe is also Nicholas' best friend, there's all the best-friend's-little-sister taboo thing going on. It isn't until they are forced to be together that the sparks have a chance to ignite.

Eve and Gabe's story takes place during Livvy and Nicholas's wedding week, a setting which provides for lots of family drama and revelations as one might expect, considering weddings typically bring out the best and worst in families! It was a good way to bring in the previous characters in the series, and I always enjoy that in a family based series. While Eve and Gabe have a few things to work first, their journey to happiness runs a gamut of emotions. 

Hurts to Love You was true to it's title in that it was a very emotional story that demonstrates just how love can hurt too.  Overall, this is a terrific series, with complex diverse characters and Hurts to Love You provides a nice wrap-up for the series.  While you can read as a standalone, I would recommend reading in order to get the full impact of the family dynamics.

EXCERPT: 

I took another swallow of cinnamon-flavored booze and made a face as it burned down my throat. Maybe I could breathe fire. I needed to be able to if I was going to make it through the summer with Affton Reed looking over my shoulder. She had some of the strongest shields I’d ever seen. If my fire wasn’t hot enough, it would bounce off her and burn me to a crisp.

The sun was down, and I was pretty much sitting in the water now. I thought about lying down and letting it lift me up and carry me wherever it wanted. I wasn’t drifting anywhere good on my own. I heard splashing and felt the air behind me stir. No longer alone. No longer left to my own devices and bad choices.

I took another swig from the bottle, draining it, and looked over my shoulder at the girl making her way toward me. Her hair looked silver in the darkening light, and there was no mistaking the annoyance on her unmade-up face. She looked at me then shifted her gaze to the empty bottle in my hand. Her lips pulled into a frown, and her eyebrows tugged down into an angry V over the top of her nose.

“You aren’t going to make anything about this summer easy, are you, Cable?”

I had a thing for her voice. It was a little bit husky and a lot sweet with that slow, southern Texas twang in it. The way my name sounded when she said it, all exasperated and frustrated, was fucking sexy. It made me wonder what it would sound like when she whispered it in the dark while I was inside of her. I’d imagined that more times than I could count over the last eighteen months.

“I don’t really do easy, Reed.” I looked at the empty bottle in my hand and contemplated tossing it into the Gulf. Knowing my luck, I’d hit some endangered marine life and give the judge one more reason to add months onto my sentence. Instead, I reached up and handed it to the leggy blonde who was now standing next to me, the water well above her ankles.

“Jesus. Did you drink this whole thing?” She sounded incensed, and when I rolled my eyes up to look at her, it was clear she was contemplating hitting me over the head with the very weapon I’d just handed to her.

I shrugged. “Pretty much.” The bubbly teen girls barely had the chance to put a dent in it before I swooped in and snagged their stash.

She sighed from where she was hovering above me. I jolted in shock when she suddenly lowered herself to the wet sand next to me, the water immediately soaking into her frayed cutoffs and swirling around her ankles and hips as she copied my pose, my empty bottle caught between her feet. She leaned forward, rested her cheek on her knee, and gazed at me steadily out of those mesmerizing eyes. “I tried to tell your mother this was hopeless. I warned her there is no helping someone who doesn’t want to be helped. I don’t want to be here, Cable.” Her voice was hard, and I was surprised that her admission hurt a little bit. I didn’t want to be around me most of the time, but I was used to other people flocking to me, vying for my attention. “I don’t want to be here, but I have to be, so that means you’re stuck with me no matter how difficult you decide to make the next couple of months. I don’t have a choice.”

I wanted a cigarette. I needed something to occupy my hands and my mouth. I’d left the smokes and m y t-shirt on the steps of the deck off dad’s house. The steps led to the beach, just a few feet from the water. It was a beautiful house on a prime piece of property. With Affton here, it was nothing more than an expensive jail cell.

I knew exactly what means my mother had gone to in order to get Affton to agree to this madness. She told me outright she was blackmailing my former classmate, I think in a thinly veiled attempt to make me care about someone else’s future if I wouldn’t care about my own. I knew if I drove Affton away, her father would lose his job. It wasn’t fair, but my mom had been nothing short of ruthless in her pursuit of my sobriety. “My mom can be very convincing when she puts her mind to it.” She could also be tough as nails and immovable when she wanted something.

Affton snorted and shifted so her chin was resting on her knee instead of her cheek. She looked out over the endless landscape of water and sky, and I shivered even though it wasn’t cold. I lifted a hand to run it through my hair. My unease lived inside of me, crawled all around my bones and under my skin. I wasn’t used to it making its way to the surface because of someone else. There was a lot unsaid between me and this girl. The few words we’d exchanged were powerful, important ones that hung heavy between us. It was so much easier when I looked at her, and she refused to look back.

“I don’t think convincing is the word I would use…more like conniving. Either way, she tied my hands, so succeed or fail, you are stuck with me until the end of summer. Let’s get you into the house so you can sleep this bottle off and pray you don’t get popped for a piss test tomorrow.” She grabbed the bottle from where she had plunked the base in the sand and lifted a pale eyebrow at me. “You should have picked something…” she trailed off and gave me a shrug. “Less wussy to enjoy your last binge with. This stuff tastes like toothpaste.”

She offered me her free hand, and for a second all I could picture was grabbing it and pulling her under with me, letting the water cover us both and take us somewhere we would both rather be. I didn’t. I took her hand and struggled to my feet. Months of forced sobriety tumbled away under the wash of cinnamon whiskey. I wobbled and almost went back down, but before I could nose dive into the shallow water, Affton was there, arm around my waist, empty bottle pressed into my side, a chilly reminder that I’d already fucked this up and it was only the first day.

I had no idea how either one of us was going to survive the summer, and if we did, I had no idea how I was supposed to survive beyond that when I was once again left to my own devious and duplicitous devices.

What I thought about Transcend

I always struggle to write reviews for Jewel E. Ann's books -- everything is a spoiler and the plot reveals so intricately woven I can't possible do justice to a recap of the story. All I want to say is if you love off-beat, slightly twisted-in-a-good-way romance, you need to be reading this author.

I love it when a romance takes on a tough question, and in Transcend, Jewel E. Ann takes on the topic of life after death.  Swayze knows things about her boss Nate that she can't possibly know -- and yet she does. And even though she has a boyfriend she loves, she's attracted to Nate in some way.  See what I mean-- complicated! I loved it and it's because of Jewel E. Ann's story telling. You get all the feels with her stories and Transcend is no exception.

So, there's my review. If you are looking for something a little different, definitely give this author and this story a try.  This is a duet, and there is a cliffhanger, but it will be so worth the ride. Trust me.

What I thought about Exposed

When I saw this anthology a few months ago, it was a one-click. I knew it was going to be good, just from the contributing authors and the concept of a charity calendar was an interesting situation running through each story.  

I've read three of the stories in this anthology so far. I like the length -- there's just enough story for a work night or two.  They didn't feel short to me, the stories were well developed and didn't feel rushed.

Level Up by Annabeth Albert is an opposites attract story. Academic Landon falls for photographer Bailey, and even though there's a sexual spark between them from the start, they have some other issues to deal with first.  I liked these two together, and Landon's situation was dealt with so much sensitivity.  A very heart-warming story about finding a partner and overcoming past trauma.

Robin Covington's Ghost is a very nice second-chance romance tale. Gareth hasn't forgotten about Oliver and vice versa, but Gareth needs to get over being a one night stand.  He's cautious about giving his heart to Oliver and needs to learn to trust him.  It's a bit of a rocky ride, but in the end, yeah, it's sweet.

And one of my favorites from this anthology comes from Tiffany Reisz in The Watermark, a tale of discovery for bull rider Jason Stillwell with his lovely photographer who just happens to be a professional submissive.  But their relationship is not about a job, there are some real feelings between Jason and Simone and they'll have to figure out how to deal with the very real distance between them.  I loved this story of Jason's sexual discoveries, throw in a conservative sister and there's plenty of conflict to resolve.  In the end, it was just a love story!

This anthology is a steal at the price and there are some great authors and stories to be found!

With every new thing he shared, Caine felt like a thin filament stretched between them, anchoring them together. The connection between them was growing, strengthening. He could feel it like he’d never felt anything before.
He was getting attached. To that feeling. To Emma herself.
It was what he’d always wanted. It was the thing he feared the most.
But right now, he had it. He had her. And he wanted her…
“Stand up, Emma.” The questions in her gaze quickly shifted to understanding, and she rose above him. His hands went to her waistband and quickly bared her. Caine pulled her until she stood with her feet on either side of him where he sat leaning against the front of the couch. “I want my mouth on you again.”
The moan that spilled out of her at the first swipe of his tongue went right to his cock. He unzipped his jeans and shoved them down his thighs. Then he held her open with his thumbs so that her clit was right where he wanted it to be. He sucked and flicked and nipped until she was thrusting against his face. He groaned his approval. Her hips became more frantic. “Caine,” she cried hoarsely, her knees going out such that she nearly collapsed into his lap, still shaking.
He took advantage and kissed her, wanting some part of him inside of her while her orgasm wrung every second of pleasure out of her.

 What I thought about Ride Dirty

I'm going to start out by saying I loved this!  It had just the right amount of everything -- suspense, romance, and omg moments.  I'm picky about my MC romance series, and this one definitely makes my list.

While making the security rounds for the club, Caine saves Emma from what they think is a robbery. Right from the start, there's a nice spark between Caine and Emma, even though he's closed off and not all that friendly.  But these two leave a mark on each other, and with a little help from the Raven Riders family, Caine and Emma end up spending a hot, hot, hot holiday together!

But Caine does have some real issues that make him feel like he is unworthy of happiness or Emma's love. This is really the crux of the story and it takes a while for him to divulge all that happened to him in his past. The scene where Caine reveals himself to Emma is incredibly emotional and sad from a few different perspectives, but unfortunately they don't get to deal with it because a greater threat changes everything.  The ending of Ride Dirty is super exciting and super romantic. Writing this review makes me want to read it all over again!  As a matter of fact, I think I've read this book more than once since I finished it, and it took a while for me to move on to my next read. It just stuck with me which is a sign of a book I really, really like.

Ride Dirty is a fast paced, super sexy good-girl/bad-boy romance with a nice dose of suspense.  It's the perfect size for reading all at once and the story just pulled me right in.  Definitely recommended.
