Review: My Kind of Guy (Hockey Guys #4) by Sarina Bowen

He’s a backup goalie with a broken game. The only thing he needs more than a win is the hot, grumpy bartender who pours his weekly beer.

Becker James is having a spectacularly bad season. Once a top draft pick, he’s now riding the bench in the minors, one failed save away from being cut. The highlight of his week? A lonely hour on a barstool at Sportsballs, Denver’s queerest watering hole—and Forest, the bartender with flannel sleeves, a gruff voice, and a beard that stars in Beck’s dreams.

Opportunity strikes when Forest’s LGBTQ hockey team—the Stickhandlers—loses their goalie last-minute. Beck makes Forest an offer: he’ll help them beat the most hated team in the beer league, but he wants something in return—one night together.

Cue the record scratch, because Seth Forrester doesn’t do hookups. After his last one went horribly wrong, he swore off men for good. He’s definitely not falling for the awkward hottie who just stammered through an indecent proposal.

But Beck is prepared to press his case, no matter how awkward it gets. And one beer league game turns into something messier, sweeter, and so much harder to walk away from…

What I though about My Kind of Guy

Hockey goalie Becker has a huge crush on Forest, the bartender of the bar where he likes to hang out. When the opportunity to fill in as goalie in the bar-league, Becker grabs at the chance to finally be with Forest.

Only Forest has some serious baggage from a prior incident and he's hesitant to get involved with anyone, with good reason. But that's not going to stop these two from inching toward being a couple, because they are just too darn good together!

This author excels at two things that I like in a sports romance -- an attraction that gradually builds to a deeper connection, with exciting sports segments that uplift the story. There are some great moments for Becker in My Kind of Guy, both on and off the ice. Becker and Forest were just perfect together.

If you are looking for an M/M romance that will leave you smiling, you might just like My Kind of Guy.

Release Day Review: 5 Stars for Thrown for a Loop ( New York Legends #1) by Sarina Bowen

The bad boy of hockey has a few skeletons in his closet. And also a pair of old figure skates…

Zoe Carson, former figure skating queen, needs a fresh start as a hockey skating coach. An NHL gig with the New York Legends is her big chance. Unfortunately, that means facing off against the star player who broke her heart ten years ago.

Chase Merritt knows his game is off, and he’s on the verge of losing sponsors. But he doesn’t need the ice princess from that intense college summer showing up and telling him what he’s doing wrong—even when she’s right.

On the ice, they’re magic. Off the ice, they’re nothing but heat and stubbornness, and everyone on the team is enjoying the show. But when an old video of Zoe and Chase’s figure skating routine goes viral, they’re forced to work together more intimately than ever before. Can the two get it right this time or will the whole world watch them crash and burn?

What I thought about Thrown for a Loop

Zoe Carson lives and breathes the old adage that "you never forget your first love." But things did not end well for Zoe and her first love. Years later, she's about to begin a new coaching job for the New York Legends hockey team where she will come face-to-face with Chase Merritt.

Chase also remembers Zoe, the Ice Princess as he called her, but his memories of their summer together are focused around a disastrous end to their relationship and the summer, for which he blames Zoe. There's quite a bit of tension here that will need to be resolved before they can even think about a second-chance.

There is one thing that brings them together and that's the ice. When the hockey organization finds out about Zoe and Chase skating together, they push them together for an encore. The story is told with flashbacks to their summer camp time together which are just lovely as they fall for each other.

I just loved Zoe. She so sweet and yet tough at the same time. But her heart clearly belongs to Chase and there's a sense of destiny around them that can't be denied. Chase is a bit surly, but there's a heart of gold underneath the tough shell he wears, especially around Zoe.

I devoured this book in a day. It left me with a smile on my face. If you are looking for a sports romance with a second chance at love theme, I would definitely recommend this and other works by this author.

Dying To Meet You by Sarina Bowen

NOW LIVE!

The acclaimed USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author returns with a twisty thriller that probes how well we actually know the men in our lives.

Rowan Gallagher is a devoted single mother and a talented architect with a high-profile commission restoring an historic mansion for the most powerful family in Maine. But inside, she’s a mess. She knows that stalking her ex’s avatar all over Portland on her phone isn't the healthiest way to heal from their breakup. But she’s out of ice cream and she's sick of romcoms.

Watching his every move is both fascinating and infuriating. He's dining out while she's wallowing on the couch. The last straw comes when he parks in their favorite spot on the waterfront. In a weak moment, she leashes the dog and sets off to see who else is in his car.

Instead of catching her ex in a kiss, Rowan becomes the first witness to his murder—and the primary suspect.

But Rowan isn’t the only one keeping secrets. As she digs for the truth, she discovers the dead man was stalking her too, gathering intimate details about her job and her past.

Struggling to clear her name, Rowan finds herself spiraling into the shadowy plot that killed him.

Will she be the next to die?

What I thought about Dying to Meet You

Architect Rowan Gallagher is working on the restoration of a family estate and uncovers a sketchy past after her ex boyfriend is found shot in the parking lot. She becomes a murder suspect for a number of reasons, forcing her to dig deeper into family history and the past occupants of the Magdalene School for Wayward Girls.

I'm old enough to remember when places like this existed, and the school becomes a major part of this thriller. There are also some nice romantic elements with daughter's father Harrison who is a felon and also under suspicion. I have to say that Harrison was one of my favorite characters. As for Rowan, she's a likable character, but I didn't really get "architect" from her as she seems to abandon her career to solve the mystery of who killed her ex. I found the daughter to be more interesting as she is not exactly forthcoming with her mother.

There are multiple points of view in the telling of this story, one in particular that had me scratching my head at the end of the story. I was looking for a bigger payoff there, but okay, I may have to go back and re-read that part of the ending to figure it out

Overall, I liked the story. It's an easy read, but it didn't have the level of gut wrenching suspense that there could have been. I guessed the killer somewhere along the way, but that's the best part of reading a mystery/thriller. Entertaining.

What I thought about Holidating

Oh my! Damien Rossi! I absolutely love all the Rossi men in the True North series and was so excited to read Damien's story. It was fantastic and really had me a bit emotional there for a few pages. But it's romance, so there's an HEA, so whew! I just loved Damien's story, it was sad and sweet. The story spans a number of years and can really tug the heartstrings before giving the reader a HEA.

Boyfriend and Blonde Date are re-releases that I still want to read. Overall this is a feel-good holiday trio that hits the romance bullseye. You can't go wrong here.

This is an very nice introduction for new readers of this author and a must for fans of the True North series.

Release Day Review: Golden Touch (Giltmaker #2) by Sarina Bowen

A brand new romance from Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen!

Livia

Once upon a time I spent an evening flirting with a handsome stranger in a bar. But before we could finish what we started, I lost my nerve and fled.

Months later, I’m minding my own business at work one morning when a stranger lets himself into the empty brewery. Panicked, I call 911, and the cops show up to slap on the handcuffs.

In my defense, I have very good reasons to be afraid. Also in my defense, I’d never met my boss’s son.

Or so I’d thought…

Nash

I don’t know what this chick has against me. First she ditches me, and now she wants to arrest me.

Livia is as frustrating as she is hot. But nobody else knows the brewery better than she does. Now we’re stuck together, sharing an office and a very small house as I run the brewery for six weeks for my cranky dad.

That’s just enough time to bring down her guard. Turns out we have a lot more in common than we thought, including a lot of smoking hot chemistry. Until Livia’s past catches up with her, and I finally figure out why she’s so jumpy. But I’ll stop at nothing to protect her, unless her ex finds her first…

What I thought about Golden Touch

Let's start with that gorgeous cover! Wowzers -- that's one attractive smile! That put me right in the mood for this romance from Sarina Bowen.

Nash is home helping the family when he meets Livia, a woman running from a bad situation. Livia is employed by Nash's family business, but doesn't know about Nash -- and it turns out that they'd met before. So things start out a bit off-kilter between them, but eventually Livia and Nash come to an understanding. Their chemistry together is great and I really liked them together.

There's a good bit of suspense with Livia's past coming back to haunt her. This keeps the pace brisk and I loved that about this book. I've really been searching for some great romance of late, and Golden Touch was satisfying as a romance with suspenseful elements.

Overall, I loved this and the wonderful world that Sarina Bowen has created for these characters.

Release Day Review: The Five Year Lie by Sarina Bowen

Bestselling romance author Sarina Bowen’s debut thriller, about one woman’s search for the truth after receiving a text from her deceased ex.

Dead men don’t send texts . . .

On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died.

Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to.

Nobody shows. But the text upends everything she thought she knew about the day he left her. The more questions she asks, the more sinister the answers get. Only two things are clear: everything she was told five years ago is wrong, and someone is still lying to her.

The truth has to be out there somewhere. To safeguard herself—and her son—she’ll have to find it before it finds her. And with it, the answer to what became of Drew.

For fans of Laura Dave and Julie Clark, but with a heart-stopping romance that only Sarina Bowen can execute, The Five Year Lie is a page-turning, spine-tingling thriller that will have you guessing until the very end.

Praise for The Five Year Lie

“I devoured this book in one day, and I guarantee you will too.”—Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight and The Lies I Tell

“An expertly woven story of love, revenge, and murder. In a world where so many books feel so similar—this was a refreshingly unique read and an addictive blend of love and mystery that I couldn’t put down. This is storytelling at its finest and I can’t recommend this book enough.”—AR Torre, New York Times bestselling author of Every Last Secret

What I thought about The Five Year Lie

When Ariel gets a text from the man she loved and thinks is dead, her whole world and what she knows about it is thrown into disarray and she must unravel all the lies she's been told for years.

This is the debut thriller from one of my favorite romance authors.  I was really eager to see how this would work for me as I have been reading quite a few domestic thrillers in the last year.  I am happy to say that I will be putting The Five Year Lie in my "favorites of 2024" category.  There's plenty of questions, lots of drama and so many lies and red herring that kept me reading. There is plenty of romantic elements here as well, which I really look for in a domestic thriller as it helps to make the stakes higher when there are feelings involved.

The story is told in multiple POVs, which keeps things moving along. There's plenty of tech in this one too, which is always a mixed bag for me as it tends to make me want to fact check things, but that was okay because accuracy with technology is important to this reader.

I'm glad to see this author branching out into other area as the writing is always top-notch and the characters are engaging. Can't wait for more!

Release Day Review: I'm Your Guy (Hockey Guys #2) by Sarina Bowen

TOMMASO

The furniture district is my personal hell. I don’t know my ass from an ottoman. But when a hot designer comes to my rescue, I realize my problems are bigger than the house I’m trying to furnish.

A scorching kiss over fabric samples makes me question all my choices. But is it too late to change my entire life to get more of them?

CARTER

I need this gig, but my cocky new client leaves out a couple crucial details:
He doesn’t mention that he's a famous hockey player. And he doesn’t own up to the way he’s always trying to undress me with his dark, broody eyes.

The man throws out more mixed signals than a broken traffic light. I've never been more sexually frustrated in my entire life. I need to back away before I do something stupid, like lose my heart.

Oops. Too late.

What I thought about I'm Your Guy

In the second book in the Hockey Guys series from Sarina Bowen, Tommaso has traded to Colorado for "reasons" and his unfurnished condo needs major help. When he spots Carter in a furniture store, he is not only attracted, he's interested by the concept he could hire Carter to do all that shopping for furnishings he hates. And Carter needs that work after a failed business venture. It's a win-win for both until they start catching feelings for each other.

I adored Carter in this story. He knows who he is, what he wants, and recognizes he's not perfect and could use some work. He has a great heart and isn't pushy as Tommaso tries to figure out his life. Amidst the back drop of another hocker player coming out, Tommaso must resolve issues from an abusive past. I felt bad for what he went through as a child and later as an adult.

The hockey was one of the best parts of this story, as Tommaso's past plays out on the ice. I really love that about Sarina Bowen's hockey romances -- she doesn't skimp on the actual sport, and does a great job of describing what is happening during an actual game. Many sports romances don't give you the sport at all.

I liked this story. I wanted these two to be happy. I loved Carter, he was so strong through all he went through. I did find it harder to connect with Tommaso. They do complement each other nicely, and I was really touched by Tommaso's mother in this story as well. I'm Your Guy doesn't have a lot of big conflict, but there was still some pretty good apology when it was needed!

Overall, a pleasant hockey M/M romance.

What I thought about Good as Gold

I must start out by saying that I was ecstatic to find out there would be a book involving another of the Rossi siblings. Sarina Bowen has created such an amazing world with the Rossi's and the Shipley's that I always want to return there.

And yowza, look at that cover!

Matteo Rossi hasn't been home in many years, choosing to live his life in Colorado, away from the family in Vermont. But when a tragedy has him unsettled, he decides to return home for Alec and May's wedding. I absolutely adored the text conversations between the family as he reconnects with all of them. There's some funny stuff here and seriously made me want to know more about Damien, the last of the Rossi boys. But I digress.

Matteo is reunited with the woman who he loved as a young man and his feelings are still there. When Leila asks him to help her have a baby, well, of course he'll help out! Matteo tries to handle everything the right way and ends us getting so wrapped up in his own head that he assumes quite a bit -- all while Leila realizes her feelings for Matteo have changed. It's a communication issue of epic proportions, but I loved how they both slowly came around to understanding what was important.  And if you are looking for a swoony hero, Matteo Rossi checks all the boxes. He's sweet and responsible and a good man who is hard to resist. Loved him.

Friendship and family is also a predominant theme in this story and I really enjoyed that aspect of Good as Gold. Matteo's reconnecting with his family is sweet and telling it through the text messages made it a whole lot of fun. I actually laughed out loud when reading. It's the typical type of sibling exchange and Sarina Bowen nails it. But there are other amazing people in Matteo's life that help him find where he needs to be and that part warmed my heart to the core. The ending is full of some very happy moments that had me reading the entire True North series all over again for the last two weeks, just to spend more time in this world with these wonderful characters.

So if you are looking for a sweet tale of family, friends and coming home, you cannot go wrong with this romance between thirty-something Matteo Rossi and Leila Giltmaker. This can be read as a standalone, and I highly recommend reading all the related stories. You won't be sorry. This is a great world to spend your reading time.

Matteo's reconnecting with his family is sweet and telling it through the text messages made it a whole lot of fun. I actually laughed aloud when reading. It's the typical type of sibling exchange and Sarina Bowen nails it. But there are other amazing people in Matteo's life that help him find where he needs to be and that part warmed my heart to the core. The ending is full of some very happy moments that had me reading the entire True North series since, just to spend more time in this world with these wonderful characters.

A swoony, heart-wrenching small-town romance from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller Sarina Bowen!

Leila:

What I meant to do: quietly divorce my lout of a husband and then have a child all on my own.

What happens instead: my crush comes back to town when I’m at my most vulnerable. After too many cocktails, I ask him to be my baby’s father.

In my defense, it’s been a rough couple of months. Seeing Matteo Rossi again after fourteen years has done a number on my emotions. And my libido.

In the morning, I’m hoping he’s forgotten the whole thing. But no such luck. In fact, Matteo has a few clarifying questions. And a few naughty ideas, too…

Matteo:
What I meant to do: visit Vermont for my brother’s wedding. Make amends to my family, and mourn the loss of a friend.

What happens instead: a hot affair with the one who got away. But it can’t last. My life is two thousand miles away, and Leila deserves everything. She’s as good as gold.

Release Day Review: 5 Stars for The New Guy (Hockey Guys #1) by Sarina Bowen

RELEASE DATE: February 28th, 2023

A new male / male hockey romance from 24-time USA Today bestseller Sarina Bowen!

My name is Hudson Newgate, but my teammates call me New Guy.

That was my nickname in Chicago, too. And Vancouver. That’s what happens when you keep getting traded. Brooklyn is my last chance, especially after my poor performance last season.

But I can make this work. The new guy knows to keep his head down and shoot the puck. The new guy puts the game first.

What he doesn’t do is hook up with the other new guy—a hot athletic trainer who lives in my building. Gavin needs this job with my team. He’s a single dad with responsibilities.

We can’t be a couple. My arrogant agent–who’s also my father–will lose his mind if I’m dating a dude. And my team needs me to score goals, not whip up a media circus.

Too bad Gavin and I are terrible at resisting each other…

What I thought about The New Guy

Hudson Newgate is "the new guy". recently traded to Brooklyn. He's nursing a hip injury when he meets Gavin one night. There's a definite spark between them them. Gavin is the new guy too -- he's the new trainer for the team, having just moved to NYC from NH with his daughter. But when they both figure out that they will be working together, Hudson doesn't just pull back, he really shuts that spark down... for a while.

There's a slow-burn workplace romance happening here and as more aspects of both men are revealed, it clearly becomes a battle between head and heart as both have good reasons for their behavior. I loved getting to know these characters and really fell hard for them. I thought Gavin had me at first, but it was really Hudson who had my heart. I could feel his loneliness and need for Gavin and their developing relationship. It was sweet and hot and just what new love should be.

There are some good secondary characters in Jordyn and Reggie and I absolutely loved the cameos from other characters in the series. And the ending is a heart-ripper and a terrific emotional ride.

I blew my reading schedule this weekend for this book and it was worth every single minute. Loved this story, the characters, the writing. A very tender and satisfying romance from Sarina Bowen.

Release Day Review: A Little Too Late (Madigan Mountain #1) by Sarina Bowen

Sarina Bowen has teamed up again with Rebecca Yarros and Devney Perry to bring you a trilogy of standalones late this year!

Introducing the Madigan Mountain series!

*************************

How to behave when the guy who broke your heart two thousand miles away turns up in your office:

One: Don’t drop your lucky coffee cup in shock, even though it’s been ten years.

Two: Don’t get defensive when he asks how you ended up working his family’s ski mountain… and why you kept it a secret.

Three: Give him the worst room in the resort. He deserves it for suddenly waltzing back in like he owns the place. (Which he kind of does.)

Four, five, six, seven, eight and nine: Do not kiss him in the hot tub.

Ten: Try to keep your heart intact after you break all of your rules.

Because Reed is leaving again. Hate can't turn back into love. And it’s a little too late

What I thought about A Little Too Late

A Little Too Late starts the new Madigan Mountain series from Sarina Bowen, Rebecca Yarros and Devney Perry. This first installment lays the groundwork for the centerpiece of the series, the Madigan family ski resort.

Reed Madigan returns home after ten years to figure out what is going on with the family resort after having left without looking back. He's not really happy about being back especially when one of his first encounters is with Ava, the girl he left behind.

There's a nice bit of tension, anger along with rekindled memories and emotions between these two in this second chance romance. It's quite lovely to watch them put the pieces back together. There are some steamy moments because their chemistry is what drives these two back into each other's arms. There are just some things that they can't resist!

The story is told from dual point of view which I like in romances like this where it's great to get insight into how each side reacts to the things that happen.

This was a very nice start to the Madigan Mountain series with good glimpses of the two other brothers who will have stories of their own. A Little Too Late has just the right amounts of emotions and steamy moments to make it a quick, enjoyable read. I liked the start to this series and I'll be looking for more.
