Review: Breaking the Plan (Mill Street #1) by Jessica Calla

Oliver Stoneridge loves order and plans, especially when they’re laid out on a perfectly formatted spreadsheet. But when his girlfriend, Violet, dumps him, Oliver’s strategy for the future slips away. Desperate to win her back, he begs Taryn, his archenemy and Violet’s beauty queen roommate, for help. Taryn’s gorgeous, thinks he’s a nerd, and wouldn’t know a plan from a prom dress, but Oliver soon finds himself tangled in her web of sexy. Suddenly, Ollie’s falling for Taryn and losing track of everything he thought he wanted.

Taryn Markos knows that agreeing to help Ollie win back her best friend is a dumb idea. Not only because he’s all wrong for Violet but because the more time she spends with him, the more confused she gets. Who knew Nerdilicious himself could challenge her with a single look, even from underneath those unruly eyebrows in dire need of a tweeze? How could she have known that he would accept her and defend her when she needed it the most? Taryn’s hated Oliver for three years. Why does the sight of him now make her come alive?

As things heat up between the frenemies, sparks begin to fly. But Ollie and Taryn know their love-hate flirtationship has to stop—before someone ends up with a broken heart.

What I thought about Breaking the Plan

Ollie has his life planned out with his girlfriend Vi. They are going to graduate, move to Cambridge while he goes to law school, graduate, get a job in NYC... he's got it all mapped out until Vi breaks up with him before she takes off on a trip to Austria.

Turning to Vi's roommate, Taryn, Ollie begs her to help him get Vi back. Only one problem -- as they spend time together, they both find friendship and more. Both Ollie and Vi don't want to hurt Vi, and they know it's wrong, but they eventually give in to their physical attraction only to find there's something much deeper between them.

I did like the light tone of the this story, and Ollie was sort of cute most of the time (except when his drinking got in the way). Taryn was a more complex character, and endearingly likable, even though she's falling for her roommate's ex. They were "on a break" after all.

I liked this story but the uneven pacing did have me taking longer than usual to finish. It does deal with a sensitive issue of falling for a friend's ex, which can be painful, and there's plenty of that to go around between Vi, Taryn and Ollie.

Overall, I thought this was a good start to the series, and I'm interested in reading more set in this world.

Review: Maple Summer Wallace by Jessica Calla

After learning she has only six months to live, twenty-two-year-old socialite, Maple Summer Wallace, plans to spend her remaining time hanging over a roulette table in Vegas and squandering her family’s fortune. Her plan takes a wrong turn when she finds Veronica, her twenty-year-old housekeeper and daughter of her beloved nanny, Lola, hovering over the dead body of octogenarian Randolph Brentwood, the fifth richest man in the world.

Maple has never been a warm and fuzzy type of family person, and the last thing she wants to do in her final months of life is deal with Veronica’s mess. But long ago Maple made a promise to Lola that she’d always look out for her “little sister” Veronica. Still, the stubborn Maple, hardened from her own personal loss, resists involvement until she learns that Veronica is pregnant with Lola’s grandchild, an heir to the Brentwood estate.

To make good on her promise to Lola, Maple vows to help Veronica. With the assistance of Michael, a handsome and savvy PI, they journey up and down the East Coast, dodging the authorities, a shady lawyer, a cold-hearted hit man, and the powerful widow, Mrs. Brentwood. As Maple’s bitterness about spending her last days saving Veronica dissipates and her friendship with Michael develops, she realizes that on the way to death, she’s found something she’s never had—life.

(PLEASE NOTE: This is the Author's Women's Fiction Debut. It is NOT a Romance. Further, this book touches on serious subjects that may affect more sensitive readers.)

What I thought about Maple Summer Wallace

This book takes off very quickly with a murder in the first chapter and a terminal diagnosis for rich, socialite Maple Summer Wallace.  Instead of spending her last months spending her fortune in Vegas, she's on the run with Ronni.

What follows is a road-trip of epic proportions with Maple discovering so very much about herself and life. Her last journey is heart-wrenching and emotional as she works with her companions to save Ronni and her child and fulfills the promises she made to others.   There are plenty of twists and turns (which is why I'm being so vague -- these twists are amazing and need to be experienced by the reader -- so no spoilers here!)

I really enjoyed this story.  It moves along very nicely, the characters are intriguing and Maple's voice is fresh and kept me interested in turning the pages to the end. While there isn't a traditional HEA, there is an ending that made my heart swell a little with sadness and hope.

Review:Let it Snow (A Holly Grove Anthology)

Let it Snow: A Holly Grove Anthology

by
Jennifer Acres, Joel Bain, Jessica Calla, J.P. Dailing,
Cindy Dorminy, Jordin Kay, K.D. Proctor, Larissa Weatherall

Welcome to Holly Grove, Vermont, dubbed the “best little town in the country.”

It’s going to take the residents of Holly Grove a lot more than an evergreen and a few strings of lights to pull off their famous holiday tree lighting ceremony this Christmas Eve. First of all, Mother Nature is not cooperating with her plans to dump the Blizzard of the Century as a Christmas present. Not to mention that the Mayor and Sheriff are both distracted, native Holly Grovers brought their complications back home with them, and the newbies to the town are causing their own special types of ruckuses. Each resident will have to be brave, face their fears, accept changes, and embrace their pasts, to pull together and accomplish the sacred tradition of their small town—the adorably quaint, low on acreage but high on drama, Holly Grove.

Experience the true meaning of the holidays, fall in love, laugh, and cry in these eight novellas, each a full story on its own, with characters who pop in and out of each other’s lives. We think you'll like it here.

What I thought about Let It Snow

One of the best parts about reading an anthology like this one is getting to revisit authors I really like and get to experience authors I haven't read before.  There are eight offerings in this holiday anthology, all set in the town of Holly Grove, Vermont.  You just know there's going to be snow amidst the steam!

Each story in this anthology deals with the holiday preparations in the town and while each story stands alone, they are interconnected like the characters in the stories. Taken collectively,  this anthology give a nice view of the good and the bad of small town life. Of course it's the holidays, so things tend to work out for all involved.

There's plenty of steamy action between the characters too as they resolve their issues and have their holiday happy ever after.  The stories are just the right size for a quick read after work (or shopping) and unlike some of the anthologies I have read where I put it down after reading my favorite author's story, I've kept going to read some new authors and that is a very good thing.

So overall, a wonderful collection of holiday inspired stories at a great price that are just the right size and with enough heat to keep you warm on a cold night.

About the Authors

Jennifer Acres' writing experience began back before she attended Houston Baptist University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Composition. She wrote three screenplays both during her time there and after, all of which received awards from the Houston International Film Festival. After working as a script supervisor in Houston and L.A., she discovered that she was in love with story and wanted to pursue writing novels.
So now, Jennifer is a YA and NA author who loves complex characters in emotionally moving stories. She writes to encourage empathy and understanding of one another. When she is not writing, she is often reading, crafting, and following her fandoms. Jennifer and her husband have made Houston their little corner of the world.

Joel Bain
Joel Bain makes his home in Vancouver, Canada. His first novel, A BULLET FOR THE BRIDE, debuted in 2009, while his latest novel, EACH OUR OWN DEVIL, hit bookshelves in 2017.
He started Dumple Meadows Publishing in 2008, delving into a variety of platforms including fiction and digital magazines in the pursuit of developing and encouraging aspiring writers. He formerly held the role of Editor-in-Chief of Sour Grapes Winery from 2009-2014.
He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia (2009) with a B.A. in International Relations and English Literature. In 2016, he completed his Certificate of Editing from Simon Fraser University. Among his writing interests are storytelling, social commentary, and film.

 J.P. Dailing
While still in high school I got a ridiculously outdated computer, even for its time. It was loud and boxy and didn’t even support spell check. But got an idea for a novel and started writing. It was horrible. So I wrote some more, and it was slightly less horrible. Later I got distracted and did other things that weren’t writing. Then I got depressed and wanted to chuck it all away for good. But then I came back to myself, moved to Houston, found the old smoldering embers, and reached in to build an inferno.
With my writing, I hope to engage the mind and soul. I have a passion for writing that has remained undimmed for the past decade. I love to write young adult fiction with whispers of science fiction or an edge of fantasy. Story for me isn’t just entertainment or a way to pass the time. It expands the imagination, dives into the depths of the human condition, and can lightly touch or brutally ensnare the heart. It all comes down to characters with the choices the make and the values they fight to the end to defend. That’s what makes story compelling and worth writing.
When I’m not actively writing (or actively not writing and calling it so), I am found with my wife, re-watching the same TV shows we love. Or I’m wasting time on my PC playing Kerbal Space Program and whatnot. Or sitting around just with my thoughts: building characters, worlds, epic feats of valor, crushing acts of betrayal, or twisted deeds of trickery.

Cindy Dorminy
After several decades of writing medical research documents, Cindy decided to switch gears and write stories where the chances of happy endings are 100% and the side effects include satisfied sighs, permanent smiles, and a chuckle or two. She writes romance novels with a slice of humor that range from historical romance to southern fried romantic comedies. Cindy was born in Texas and raised in Georgia. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kennesaw State University and her Master’s Degree from The University of Georgia. Cindy enjoys gardening, reading, bodybuilding and a whole bunch of movies. She can be overheard quoting lines from her favorite movies… a lot. But her favorite pastime is spending time with Mark, her bass playing husband, Maddie Rose, the coolest girl on the planet, and fur child Daisy Mae. She currently resides in Nashville, TN where live music can be heard everywhere, even at the grocery store.

Jordin Kay

K.D. Proctor
KD Proctor loved college so much that when it came time to graduate, she didn’t want to leave. Finding her niche in graduate school, she traded her textbooks for student handbooks and began a career in College Student Personnel, fulfilling her wish to stay on a college campus forever. When she took a stab at writing her first novel, her mother rejoiced--she finally had a reason to use that undergraduate degree in English!

KD is a multi-award winning author who lives in west-central Minnesota with her husband and fur-kids. She likes to write fun twists on the usual tropes that we all love. Her characters are smart, funny, and always swoony. And yes. They always get their happily ever after.

Larissa Weatherall
Larissa Weatherall is a born and raised southern girl who currently lives in the “big city” to the north with her flyboy husband and two adorable little handfuls. From the first moment she watched Cinderella and Prince Charming kiss and ride away at the end of the movie, she’s been obsessed with happily ever after.

Larissa is a sucker for stories that shred her heart then heal it when love conquers all in the end. When she’s not writing all the swoony, southern heroes, Larissa enjoys spending time with her family and friends and the occasional hour she can soak up the sun on her back porch with a book.

What I thought about She Wants It All

Second floor Dave is in love. Smitten. He can hardly speak around the woman who has captured his heart.  Maggie lives in the basement of Sheridan Hall, and he's had his eye on her since he saw her feeding squirrels on campus.  Only problem is that when he's around her, he's no longer "Dave the rock star." He turns into some other guy and can't speak, he's so enamored of her. The start of this book was so very sweet, with Dave trying to find his footing with Maggie.

Maggie likes Dave, but she's still getting over her break up with Winston, a childhood boyfriend.  She thinks she wants to take a break from guys, but Dave is just so darn cute, she succumbs to his charms. I loved the way these two get together and have to work through (mostly Dave's) issues before they can get to the "good stuff".

Dave is truly adorable and Maggie is very likable too.  It's easy to want these two to get together and make it work.  Of course there are obstacles.  Maggie may get a much-wanted internship across the country and Dave's band may be going on a summer tour, if he can get his act together on his original compositions.  They'll have to help each other over this hurdle.

Even more troublesome is Dave's past history, especially since he has a reputation of being a well-endowed one-night-stand sort of guy.  What was nice about the story was that Maggie saw the real Dave and didn't buy into his reputation, although it was tough considering the major bombshell that gets dropped when everything seems to be going just right for the couple.

She Wants It All touches upon many themes from the college experience and Dave and Maggie are just so adorable with each other I loved the beginning of their relationship. I also loved how everything regarding Sheridan Hall and its occupants was resolved at the end of this book.  I really enjoyed this series, and while She Wants It All can be read standalone, you may want to catch up on what happened before, since the events of the first book are carried through the following two books in the series.

Overall, a very enjoyable read and one of my favorite NA series.

What I thought about She Runs Away

I wasn't sure about how I was going to feel about this title.  This is the first book I've read from this author, and it's the second in a series.  I'm very happy to say that I enjoyed She Runs Away and that this book works as a standalone if you are interested in trying it out.

Ben and Meg have some not-so good history after Ben dumps Meg for another student in their early days in Sheridan Hall. When she finds out she matches Ben in a Valentine's matching experiment, she runs away so he doesn't find out that their questionairre answers make them a good match, even though she's really attracted to him. She can't take that chance with her heart again.

When Ben realizes his 95% match didn't show, he works with a friend to try and find out who she is, although he does realize he still wants Meg. He tries to convince her to give him a second chance, only she's not going for it even though she really likes him. Ben doesn't give up and it's a slow dance for these two to get together and I really enjoyed that part of the story. Ben is so sweet, it's impossible not to love him.

In addition to her being Ben's match, Meg is keeping other secrets. Her father is a famous athlete and she's keeping that from her friends and especially the guys. When a relative she thought was dead re-enters the picture, she could be in trouble. Ben isn't about to let anything happen to Meg and that becomes a major source of conflict between them.

I really liked this New Adult title. I thought it captured college life quite well.  I liked that there were multiple facets to the story too -- the romance between Ben and Meg, Meg's home situation and then there's the loss of their friend and roommate, Frank which I assume happened in the previous book.  There's a lot about Frank in this story, and what happens to him is the impetus for some of Ben and Meg's decision making. Sometimes the references were just too many and got on my nerves a little.  That's really my only complaint about this story. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

Overall, I recommend this title to readers looking for a sweet college romance with a light sports theme.  It works as a standalone, but I'm finding myself looking at my reading schedule to find time to read the first book in this series.  I liked these characters, and I want more!
