What I thought about Want You
I love it when an author takes a chance with a story that is likely to generate some controversy or at least varying opinions. In Want You, Jen Frederick gives the reader a story that made this reader have all the feels, from wanting to put the book down during the stark, realistic and stomach churning beginning, feeling the incredible wonder and pain of Bitsy's and Leka's budding romance and the terror of the ending that had me turning the pages so fast to find out what would happen to these two. See what I mean? Lots of feels.
Leka is just a boy when he saves Bitsy from a life on the street, even though it means he must align himself with real criminals (and commit criminal acts himself) in the process. I did have a hard time reading this, mostly because I knew that this was real life for many children living on the streets. Leka's devotion to Bitsy is both sweet and terrifying because at any time those he works for could demand he turn Bitsy over to them to share. Yes, that's exactly what I mean.
But Leka's number one priority is keeping Bitsy safe and he accomplishes his goal, even though it hurts them both. Bitsy goes along with Leka's protection, at least until she can return to him and let him know how she feels about him. It's a natural evolution of their relationship, but some readers may find it disturbing. I love Leka's struggle with himself here. He's such an interesting and contradictory character.
As their relationship grows, so does the danger of discovery and the realization of how much leverage Leka's boss has over him through Bitsy. In a very graphic and realistic scene everything comes to an explosive conclusion.
I really liked this story and I recommend it if you like dark/ mafia romance that doesn't sugar coat anything. I loved that about Want You, and I loved Leka and Bitsy.
