Early Review: 5 Stars for The Other Half of the Grave(Night Huntress #9) by Jeaniene Frost

THE OTHER HALF OF THE GRAVE

Available April 26th, 2022

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Night Huntress series, a thrilling new look at the iconic origin story of Cat and Bones, as experienced by Bones…from the other half of the grave.

There are two sides to every story–and the sizzling British alpha vampire, Bones, has a lot to say…

Ever wondered what Bones was thinking and feeling when he and half vampire Cat Crawfield first met? Or how their story might differ if he were the one telling it? Now, relive the beginning of Cat and Bones’ bestselling love story through Bones’ point of view, which reveals a darker, sexier take on their early days, as well as a deeper dive into Bones’ past, the vampire world, and other things that Cat didn’t see when their story was told only through her eyes in Halfway to the Grave.

Cat had her say. It’s Bones’ turn.

“Even if you’ve never read any of the other books in Frost’s sexy, action-packed series (think Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Anne Rice fans), this darker, even sexier reboot is a perfect starting point.” Apple Books. Voted on the “Best Books of April” on Apple Books.

What I thought about The Other Half of the Grave

I'm generally not a big reader of alternate POV from published material -- I've seen it done badly and with too many repetitive scenes and dialogue, so even though I adore this series and Cat and Bones, I was a little hesitant about reading The Other Half of the Grave. I'm happy to say I absolutely loved this book.

Even though most readers will know this story from reading Cat's version of how she met Bones and the things they got into, Bones' version was fresh and interesting and just as entertaining as Cat's point of view. Maybe it was just that it was a long time since I read Cat's version in Halfway To the Grave, but I really loved reading Bones point of view. There is a reason we all love the Bones, and it's on the pages of this book in spades. (haha)

If you haven't read the original series in Cat's point of view, I definitely recommend reading that first before reading Bones POV. What I found most interesting was reading how Bones processed his feelings, and I've always loved this character for the fact that he does have that one vulnerability -- his love for Cat. That comes through so very well in this book.  I love it when the male character in a romance falls hard and Bones love for Cat just shines through here.

The author does a great job of giving the reader more than just a rehash of the original material. There are some new scenes the reader didn't get in the Cat point of view which made this an all the more worthwhile read

So, I just loved this.  As a longtime fan of the Cat and Bones series, The Other Half of the Grave adds more to the love story that is Cat and Bones. It made me want to re-read the entire series again.  Readers of the series, you're going to want to grab a copy of this. And if you haven't read this exciting paranormal romance series you should get on it.  It's terrific -- one of the best out there, and be sure to pick up a copy of The Other Half of the Grave too!

What I thought about Code Name: Revenge

Since the beginning of this series, Dozer has been the super-smart intelligence operative at Jameson Security. He's best friends with one of my very favorite characters, Bebe. I couldn't wait to read Dozer's story.

When Dozer hears that a certain member of the Russian mob has escaped from prison, he knows exactly where he is going to go and that's to the ex-girlfriend who turned him in. The same women that Dozer has been secretly in love with for all these years he acted like a loner.

Even though he doesn't have the training, he decides he is going after Jess to protect her and her daughter. Of course he has the gang from Jameson at his back. He's going to need them.

There comes a time in all series when all the stories have been told.  I've really enjoyed this series, especially the earlier stories, but I found this one to be predictable and short on story elements.  I think sometimes when you've been waiting for a character's story that it just doesn't live up to your expectations.

Overall, this is a quick, easy read.  The conflict is resolved without huge effort or sacrifice. The plot is predictable, but a good ride if you are looking for that sort of romance.

Release Day Review: 5 stars for Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare

It’s one hex of an attraction in this romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare.

When Reggie Johnson answers a job ad in the paper, she’s astonished to find that she’s not applying for work at her favorite card game, Spellcraft: The Magicking. Instead, she’s applying to be an actual familiar for an actual witch. As in, real magic.

The new job has a few perks - great room and board, excellent pay, and she's apprenticing to a powerful witch. Sure, the witch is a bit eccentric. And sure, there was that issue with the black cat Reggie would prefer to forget about. The biggest problem, however, is warlock Ben Magnus, her employer's nephew and the most arrogant, insufferable, maddening man to ever cast a spell.

Reggie absolutely hates him. He's handsome, but he's also bossy and irritating and orders her around. Ben's butt might look great in a crystal ball vision, but that's as far as it goes. But when someone with a vendetta targets the household, she finds herself working with Ben to break a deadly curse. Apparently, when they're not fighting like cats and dogs, things get downright...bewitching.

What I thought about Go Hex Yourself

Oh, this book was so much fun!  I really didn't know what to expect because I am a first-time reader of this author, and Go Hex Yourself is really terrific.

Reggie needs a better paying job and when she sees an add for a spellcaster, she thinks its all about a card game.  What she finds is Dru, the very old matriarch of the Magnus family and her nephew and warlock Ben.

Ben isn't too eager to have an outsider acting as his aunt's famliar, especially when she doesn't believe in magic.  So it all starts with Ben convincing Reggie that magic does indeed exist, with some help from Dru.

It's a cute story, and the dialogue between Ben, Dru, and Reggie just sparkles. It's snappy and realistic and Reggie loves to challenge Ben who is just terrific as the warlock that everyone hates. He falls hard for Reggie and it's romantic and sweet and they are just so very good together.

This book left me feeling happy and I'm really hoping that there will be more to this series. I'm not a huge reader of rom-coms but I will be definitely be looking for more of this world of old magic.  Loved this story, the snappy dialogue and especially Reggie and Ben. Recommended if you are looking for a light, sweet, paranormal romance.

New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare writes under three pen names. As Jessica Clare, she writes erotic contemporary romance. As Jessica Sims, she writes fun, sexy shifter paranormals. Bloody hell! What was she doing? Gideon certainly wouldn’t let a lass dupe him like Ella had tricked his oldest brother with a kiss, to escape him when they first met.

Fingers tugging his hair, she pressed her lips hard against his. The kiss was clumsy, frantic, like a virgin caught in her first storm of passion. But when her warm palms caught his face, and she slanted across his mouth, deepening the kiss, he wondered if she possibly had some experience.

She stroked fingers through his hair, her warm lips moving over his, and her frantic desperation began to calm. As the stiffness he’d felt in her faded, so did his thoughts about Ella tricking Cain and whether this soft creature in his arms was a maiden or not. Even the questions about how she got in and her ultimate purpose washed away with the growing warmth of her response. Perhaps it was the darkness, or the mystery of who she was, or the scent that plucked at his memory, but fire ignited inside Gideon. His arms encircled her, pulling her soft body against his hard frame.

Gideon lifted her, backing her against the wall. She was all womanly curves and softness. His fingers tangled in the twist of hair at her nape. Pins fell, plinking on the stone window frame next to her, and her heavy braid slipped down over one shoulder. He pressed his face to it, inhaling along the thick length as they both pulled shallow breaths. It was silky and fragrant, tugging at that memory that wouldn’t reveal itself. Who was she? Would she stay the night?

His mouth fell upon her neck, tasting the light saltiness there as he trailed kisses over her smooth skin. Her head tipped back against the wall, her breath coming in shallow rasps. He moved back to her parted lips where the kiss swept them both up again. The woman’s scent, her warmth and curves, the mystery around her… It all ensnared him. Like a siren in Homer’s Odyssey.

He held her between him and the stone wall beside the open window. Cold air had no effect on him with such fire growing inside at her response. He captured her face in his hands, feeling the mask. It was wool and tied tightly. He reached behind her head to pluck at the knot. As if the lass had been under the same spell as he, his tugging on the ties startled her into action. She gasped, turning her face away before he could free the knot. She shoved at his chest, her knee rising, but he shifted so she missed his groin.

“Hold still,” he said, but her hand whipped out toward him, and Gideon felt the sting of a blade across his arm. Surprise made him release his hold for a second. Apparently, that was all the time the lass needed to hurl herself out of his window.

“Nay!” he yelled as she disappeared, leaping to her death.
