Review, Excerpt & Giveaway:The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend by Alyssa Rose Ivy

About THE HAZARDS OF SLEEPING WITH A FRIEND

Warning: Sleeping with a friend might change your life forever.

Sleeping with Kyle was never in the plans. Pretending to be his girlfriend was one thing, but letting our relationship become anything but platonic was another. The problem with mixing friendship with sex is that inevitably feelings get involved, and when that happens there's no turning back.

When Kyle's life fell apart around him, I needed to help, but doing that meant opening myself up to the most terrifying thing in the world—falling in love.

Excerpt

I glanced out the window and saw her. Jade? She’d driven all the way up to find me? I stared at her for a moment. Her dark hair was soaked, and she had one arm wrapped around her chest as she anxiously watched the door.

She began shivering, and I snapped. I couldn’t leave her standing out there in the rain. I opened the door and took in her sopping wet form. “Jade.” Her name came out in barely a whisper.

“Kyle.” She stood there staring at me.

“What are you doing here?” I tried to keep my voice level, but I was hit by such all-encompassing emotion that I could barely see straight.

“I’m here because I need to be. I need to be with you.” Her eyes remained fixed on mine.

Her words almost broke me. I fought the urge to reach out to touch her. One touch and I’d never be able to let go. Instead I broke the intense gaze between us and gestured for her to get out of the rain. “Come in.”
“If you’re sure.” Her eyes searched mine, probably looking for evidence that I was really inviting her in.
“I am.” I took her hand and pulled her inside, closing the door behind her.
“You’re here.” My body trembled with the effort to keep away from her. Did I think I could really stay away? That I could hold any anger or resentment toward the girl who lit up my life? “How’d you know I’d be here?”
“I didn’t know for sure. I got the address from Dana and took a chance.” She dropped her now sopping wet bag on the floor. “I’m worried about you. Everyone is. I know you are hurt, but that isn’t a reason to run away from everyone. You need to let someone in.”

What I thought about The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend
I just really love this series and it's not a surprise that I really liked The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend.  Jade and Kyle are friends. Good friends. They work together and go to school together. And they are secretly attracted to each other but neither wants to move forward past friendship for their own reasons, until Kyle is invited to a family function and has to bring his "girlfriend".

Of course Jade is going to help him out and it doesn't take long before they both learn the hazards of sleeping with a friend.  Playing at being a couple in front of Kyle's family is challenging but not any more than figuring out their relationship when they go back to school.  But when tragedy strikes, well, things get even more complicated.

What I loved about this story was the realism. The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend does a great job of capturing what might happen when you cross that line with a friend, and all the emotions that go along with it.  I thought they had in under control until the end when things just go sideways for them and I did get a little bit choked up about it.

What I like about this series is that the characters act like people I know in real life, and they don't drag things out too long.  I loved the way this story ended (nope, not going to tell you!)

If you are look for some sweet college love stories with a nice dose of drama and realistic characters, this series might be for you.  Recommended.

Prologue
Asher
I’ve been in love with Ember Rose Edwards for a while, but she doesn’t know it. I can’t tell her, either, not when the battle’s ending solely rests on her making a choice and sacrificing someone she loves. If I were to divulge how I feel, I’d be interfering even more, and I’ve already been banished for entering her life. It’s not something I regret. I made the choice the day I first saw her. I wanted her in my life, regardless of the consequences.
That day feels like such a long time ago, yet it hasn’t been more than a few months. So much has happened since then. So much has changed, for the better and the worse.
God, we were both so different back then.
As I sit beside her bed and watch Ember sleep, my thoughts drift back to the day when I first laid eyes on her…
I was sent to that place to collect a soul, but what I didn’t expect was that I’d end up at a house crammed with a ton of humans, dry humping the shit out of each other. I had instantly wanted to get the hell out.
A rock song plays on the stereo and floats across the room full of people dancing. Beer cans and cups cover the floors, and the air is drenched with the stench of cigarettes. It has been a long week. Michael, the leader of the Angels, has sent me on a total of five missions to collect souls, which is a large amount compared to most Angels. Then again, Michael has never been a fan of me, considering I have Reaper blood.
My sole purpose tonight is to wait until the person dies then collect their soul before the Reapers get ahold of it. I’ve already spotted three Anamotti, and I’m guessing they’re here for the same reason I am—waiting for the person to pass away.
I sense a fight in the air, thick and heavy, like tar.
I lean against the wall near the corner, watching the crowd, drinking a beer, eager for the night to be over. As my gaze travels over each human, I wonder which one of them is the unlucky person who will die tonight. Humans are so fragile, so...
The air suddenly thins and charges with electricity, full of life and death mixed together. My attention drifts to the side of me, my senses sharpening as I zero in on a girl. Ember Rose Edwards. Her name comes to me like a breath of fresh air.
I’ve never met her before, but know her name for solely one reason—she carries Angel blood, just like she carries Reaper blood.
Sadly, I haven’t crossed paths with a Grim Angel in a while, because Reapers are making them a dying breed. Usually, I pass by without so much as a second glance, despite my connection to them. This time, though, I find myself staring. One, two, three songs go by, and I still can’t seem to take my eyes off her.
She’s gorgeous, to say the least. Dark hair flows down her back, skin as pale as snow, full lips as red as a rose, and big, hazel eyes. But her beauty isn’t the only thing that captures my attention. It’s the pain hidden in her eyes, masked beneath her strength.
Her attention is fixed on the throng of dancing people, and she looks as uninterested as I felt until I laid eyes on her. She keeps her distance, too, probably because of her Grim Angel ability to see death with a touch.
I know I should stay away. Let her be. I’ll be breaking a lot of rules if I interfere with her life, but I find myself moving in her direction, drawn to her.
When I reach her, I whisper the first thing that comes to mind. “God, it’s like mating season in here.”
She shudders from the feel of my breath and stumbles forward, stomping on the toe of my boot. As she regains her balance, her gaze whips in my direction and slowly travels from my boots to my shirt then finally rests on my eyes. She swallows hard as our gazes lock, and I realize she is afraid of something.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you,” I apologize quickly.
She shivers again then clears her throat. “Sorry about your shoes.” She starts to back away nervously. “Crowded rooms just make me a little uneasy.”
I chuckle, crunching the empty cup in my hand and chucking it into a nearby trashcan. “I know what you mean. All this”—I gesture at the people dry humping one another—“is an excuse for the opposite sex to rub up on one another.”
“That’s a pretty good observation.” She almost smiles, and I feel like I won the lottery or something.
Pressing my lips together, I inch closer and lean over her shoulder. She stiffens from my nearness, probably worried I’ll touch her and force her to see my death. I won’t put her through that, though, so I make sure to leave a sliver of space between us.
“Take those two for instance.” I point at a girl with pink hair dancing with a gangly guy. He moves with a huge lack of coordination, while the girl is graceful, looking bored as hell. “I think they’ve got their own mating ritual going on. Although, I think it might be a one-sided mating ritual.”
She tracks where I’m looking. “I think you’re right.” She turns to me, and for a moment, the pain in her eyes vanishes and pure lust flashes, instead. “It looks like she’s bored.”
My heart thuds deafeningly inside my chest from the look of desire in her eyes directed at me. “Is she a friend of yours?”
She nods, biting her lip contemplatively. “Her name’s Raven.”
I cock my pierced brow. “Like the poem?”
“You know Edgar Allan Poe?” He face lights up with excitement.
Jackpot. The girl has it bad for the dead poet, who I vaguely remember meeting two centuries ago.
“A little bit.” I stare at her beauty, trying to figure out what to do next. I know what my body wants to do with her, and my mind seems to be veering toward the same thing. Regardless, I’d be in a shitload of trouble for touching her. Fuck, even this conversation is going to get me into trouble.
“What’s your name?” I ask, trying to act as normal as I can.
“Ember.” She scoots forward, holding her breath as a girl stumbles by, having a drunken conversation with the air.
“Ember … I like it.” I dare a step or two closer and breathe in the faint scent of her—roses with a hint of lilies. “ ‘And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor,’ ” I quote the one line I can remember from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.”
“I thought you said you knew a little?” she asks me, impressed.
I shrug, stuffing my hands into my pockets. “What can I say? I’m fascinated with the idea … love, death, and the insanity it brings.”
She grows uncomfortable with my mention of death, and her eyes anxiously sweep the crowd as if she’s seeking an escape. I can’t have her leave just yet. I need to keep her here a little longer. I don’t want her to go.

Book Tour & Review:Turn to Me by Kaitlyn Stone

The “Swoon-worthy” Donovan Alexander returns in Turn to Me, the newest work of fiction in the Thin Blue Thread Series inspired by true events from author Kaitlyn Stone. This steamy contemporary new adult romance series features alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They're flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable.

When fate intervenes, resurfacing both their painful pasts, 19-year-old college student Kenna Sloane and 22-year-old rookie cop Donovan Alexander must deal with the consequences and the unresolved feelings. Kenna turns to Donovan for support and guidance, seeking the release only Donovan can provide. But the more he becomes preoccupied with the Santa Monica drug taskforce, his heart blackens with vengeance for his brother and he risks losing Kenna’s love forever. Don’t miss this intriguing story of forgiveness and letting go.

What I thought about Turn to Me
Kenna and Donovan's story continues in Turn to Me.  Their relationship faces a few challenges as Donovan gets more deeply involved with his job and Kenna starts looking beyond his influence to her own life after facing a return from her past.  It's all about those stresses on a relationship.

This book is paced more slowly as it sets up some situations and lets the reader get to know these characters in more depth. I'm intrigued by Donovan and who he is exactly -- is he tough cop and protective lover or does he have a darker side?  My questions about him have me coming back to the story.

Turn to Me resolves a few of the story lines from book one and sets up a few new ones for the third book in the series.  I like the little bit of doubt this story leaves me with and it's what has me coming back to read the next installment in the series.

About the Author
  From Kaitlyn Stone

They say for authors to write what they know. My novels are inspired by events in my own life. I truly relive my experiences twice through the lives of the characters I create. Not only do I relate to their thoughts and feelings, I have lived many of them. When I sat down to write a love story inspired by my real-life first love as a tribute to our very own fairytale romance, I never thought a book would be the end result, but 80,000 words later that’s exactly what I had. I wanted to express in words what his love means to me and how it changed me as a person, never to see or experience life the same. My goal was to capture the essence of true love through an intriguing story and create rich, life-like characters to speak of the emotions I felt when falling in love for the first time. One chapter turned into two, and those, plus twenty-two more became a book. Once I realized my goal of writing a book was going to come to fruition, I wished to share my story with the world, to inspire others to believe in true love and happily-ever-after’s. Choosing our milestone anniversary as its publication date, I planned to self-publish my completed novel for my husband’s gift. What better way to tell the man of your dreams how much you truly love him, then sharing it with the world. I admit I have always gravitated toward love stories and happily-ever-after's, forever chasing the first love dragon. There's nothing like the witty banter between characters, fueling their physical attraction, and the anticipation of their first kiss. Add in the push and pull from the couple's sexual tension and the world trying to tear them apart, and you have a recipe for an exciting, steamy romance. Place the couple in interesting locations, living adventures most only dream of and the journey propels you forward through the pages. Sprinkle in danger for both the hero and heroine to combat and the courage and strength of the characters shine through. Because I’m not a writer by training, I worked with writing critique groups to fine tune my manuscript before the planned release date of summer, 2014. As a fluke, not expecting any response, I submitted my completed manuscript to a publishing house, and a week later I was offered a contract.

Review: The Virgin (The Original Sinners: White Years Book III) by Tiffany Reisz

The controversial story before the story continues in the critically acclaimed and award-winning series The Original Sinners.

For years, Kingsley Edge warned Eleanor the day would come when she, the mistress of a well-respected Catholic priest, would have to run and hide. She always imagined if that day came she'd be running away with Søren. But instead, she's running from him.

Knowing Søren and Kingsley will their use their influence to bring her back, Eleanor alone, penniless and scared takes refuge at the one place the men in her life cannot follow: the abbey where her mother has taken orders. Behind the cloistered gates of the convent, Eleanor hides from the man she loves and hates in equal measure

She cannot, however, hide from her true nature. When Eleanor befriends a young virginal nun, she faces a startling sexual awakening. But Eleanor can't stay forever, and the lure of her real life beckons beyond the locked gates. But to follow her fate means to leave Kyrie behind, a sacrifice Eleanor refuses to make

The lure of the forbidden. The temptation to sin. The price of passion has never been higher, and Eleanor will have to pay it if she ever wants to go home again.

What I thought about The Virgin
It's no secret I love this author's writing and this series. The characters are unique, the story smart, the dialogue crisp and entertaining. In The Virgin, Kingsley and Nora are the primary storytellers. Upon gathering in Scotland for a special occasion, the triad discovers there are still secrets between them, and it's confession time.

Nora and Kingsley each have a story to tell and there's a somewhat somber feeling amid the usual tales of sexual delights. I loved learning more about both of these characters, especially my favorite Kingsley. The Virgin hit me with some deep emotions, especially King's story. It might be one of the most emotional installments in the entire Original Sinners series.

Fans of the series will love the intimate look into these characters lives and hearts.  I loved how they've worked out their dominant and submissive relationships and their acceptance of their sexuality without shame. There's real love here because of their deep understanding of each other. And that's what I call an awesome romance.

Authors:
Toni Aleo, Kindle Alexander, Sawyer Bennett,
Chelle Bliss, Eden Butler, and Brenda Rothert

Synopsis:

Summer in the Big Easy is hot. Inside Tulane Medical Center the temperature is on the rise. A doctor nursing a broken heart. A wounded warrior with no interest in love. A single father finding the girl who got away. A combat nurse trying to adjust to civilian life. Two lost souls looking for love. A former detective looking for answers and an FBI agent who finds more than he bargains for.
Desire. Lust. Excess. New Orleans will never be the same. Six never before released stories that will leave you breathless. Dirty things happen in the dark.

What I thought about Night Shift
Off Duty- Sawyer Bennett
When Tim and Holly happen to meet in the ER after ten years separation, they can't deny their strong feelings for each other still burn hot. This sweet second chance story left me smiling and feeling good.

Rebound- Chelle Bliss
FBI Agent Sam is visiting New Orleans in the hopes of mending his broken heart. When he meets a gorgeous nurse in a bar, things start looking up for both of them. This story really captured the great flavor of New Orleans.

Wanting to Forget- Toni Aleo

Hockey player Jordie heads to New Orleans to deal with injury rehab and the loss of a relationship.  Jordie is one messed up guy and his extreme methods land him in the hospital.   I don't know much about this character from the Assassin's series, but I'll just say he's got some stamina and some head problems! I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others, but I certainly won't forget it!

Closet Confession- Kindle Alexander

This story of Dr. Baby(great name!) and Justin the nurse filled my heart! I really loved this feel-good M/M romance and I'd love to read more about this couple.

Healing Touch- Brenda Rothert
Joss and Carson, both recovering from broken hearts and betrayal, get to know each other over a game of 20 questions. Will they take a chance on love or even lust, again? There was great chemistry between these two characters that made for a very sweet story.

Swimming in Shadows- Eden Butler

I'm a huge Eden Butler fan and this was a great preview of her new Shadow Series. Neil Ryan is pretty messed up and when he ends up in the hospital with an old friend, the reader gets that heart-to-heart conversation that Eden Butler does best. Looking forward to reading more about Navy Seal Ryan in Shadows & Lies.

Overall, I liked the novellas in this title. There was a sweetness to the love stories that I really enjoyed along with the feeling of being transported to New Orleans with each story. The novellas were just the right size for a quick read when you don't want to start a new book. I'd buy it for the Kindle Alexander story alone, and don't forget that proceeds go to charity.

Excerpt

“Where have you been?” My sister rushed forward, catching me up in a tight hug. “I’ve been trying to call you all day. We checked everywhere and couldn’t find you.”
“Sorry. I just needed some alone time.” I squeezed her back, unable to stop from smiling. The thought of Anne turning her back on me had scared me more than I liked to admit.
“Well, I get you might want that.” She stepped back. “But you could have told someone.”
“You can’t just disappear like that.” And Ben kept right on frowning. “Shit, Liz, you’re pregnant.”
“Don’t upset her,” snapped Anne.
Ben ignored her. “I don’t know what the hell’s going on in your head. But you need to let me know where you are.”
My eyebrows went up and my mouth opened, ready to rip him a new one.
“She doesn’t answer to you. She’ll let you know if and when she decides to let you know,” said Mal, laying down the law to his bandmate before turning my way. “You will text your sister next time you decide to go wandering for a day, understood?”
My mouth, it still hung open.
“Christ, man.” Over and over, Ben’s hands rolled into tight fists before releasing again. “Can you cut the shit and get off my back for a fucking minute?”
“Don’t swear at him.” My usually sensible and staid sister poked a finger dead center in Ben’s broad chest. “You’re the one that caused this mess, thank you very much. She might still be a little young and naive, but you’re definitely old enough to know better.”
“That’s right.” Standing about as tall as a skyscraper, despite only coming up to Ben’s nose, Mal stared him down. Or up. Whatever. “This is a family matter. You can leave, thanks.”
