What I thought about Love and Shananigans

It was the synopsis for Love and Shananigans and the fact the story took place in Ireland that got my attention. I don't often read and review unsolicited titles  but I decided to take a chance on this one, and I'm so very glad that I did.  Love and Shananigans might just end up on my favorite reads of 2014 list.

The action starts off days before the wedding, with the ladies trying on their typical hideous dresses. I couldn't help but like Fiona from the start, with her quick wit, and fairly forgiving nature. It's a fun scene, made even more interesting with the arrival of the Gavin, the groom and his new pet labradoodle, Wiggly Poo. Yeah, that name made me cringe-laugh every time I read it.

Fiona and Gavin have some history and when the truth comes out, the wedding is off,  Gavin's almost-inlaws put the screws to him in major way, and Fiona ends up having to stay in Ballybeg for while, missing her long-awaited vacation.

When Fiona ends up in a cottage next door to Gavin, they can't deny the connection they had years ago. But eight years is a long time and both have different goals for themselves and it becomes a story of choices for Gavin and Fiona.

I really loved both of the main characters.  Gavin is sweetly romantic with Fiona, and Fiona is a strong woman that knows her own mind. There's a spark between them from their very first moment together, and they jumped off the page for me in a really pleasant way.

There is a lightness to all of this that just makes Love and Shenanigans more romantic comedy than drama and I really loved that about this story.  I just felt good while I was reading this. It was refreshing and fun and made me want to keep turning the page.

Recommended.

On the Rocks by Alyssa Rose Ivy Release Day Launch & Giveaway

We are stoked for today's Release of Alyssa Rose Ivy's ON THE ROCKS!! ON THE ROCKS is a contemporary romance and is a part of Alyssa Rose Ivy’s Mixology Series. It is priced at just $.99 right now. This will last for a limited time only to celebrate the release!

ON THE ROCKS Synopsis:
Love is best served on the rocks.

My roommates look really good naked. At least one of them does. I’m sure the other one does too, but I haven’t seen him without his pants on. Living with two guys wasn't something I’d ever considered, but the opportunity fell in my lap, and I’d have been crazy to turn it down.

College went by in a great big blur leaving me with less of a direction than I had going in. Add in a family that wanted nothing to do with me, and my post-college plans were less than clear. What’s a girl to do when she has nowhere else to turn? She moves to the Outer Banks and learns to bartend. After all, it was my horrible bartending skills that led me to my roommate’s bed and into his heart.

EXCERPT:

I heard the water in the sink running, and I assumed someone was brushing their teeth. I knocked while pushing open the door. “I just need my—”

The rest of my words were lost as Macon turned toward me. There he was holding a toothbrush and wearing nothing. Absolutely nothing.

“Oh my god. I am so sorry.” I backed out without finding my brush.

“Can I help you?” His voice was amused. How was he amused?

“Why are you naked?”

“Because I just got out of the shower.”

I kept looking down. “But you were brushing your teeth.”

“I like to dry off before I get dressed. You should try it sometime.”

“That’s what a towel is for.” I heard the ping of the towel bar. I glanced up, half hoping he’d be covered and half hoping he wouldn’t be. He had a towel tied around his waist.

“I guess we’re even then.”

“Even?” I could barely think straight. I was still picturing Macon naked.

“Yeah, I walked in on you in a towel, now you’ve seen me baring it all. We’re good to go.”

“I wasn’t naked.”

He grinned. “So what you’re saying is now I’m the one with the extra points. Nice.”

“You’re crazy.”

“I am? You’re the one who opened the door without waiting for an answer, and what did you need anyway?”

“My brush,” I answered sheepishly. He was right, I did pretty much barge right in.

“Here you go,” he held out the brush.

I took it, and my hand brushed against his in the process. Even tiny touches from him got me. “Thanks, and sorry.”

“Not a problem, roomie.”

“Okay.”

“Is there anything else?”

“Oh, no. Nothing.” I backed out the rest of the way and closed the door. Could I get more embarrassing?

4 Stars for Hiding in the Spotlight by Karen Booth

Alex Halford’s rock-star husband, Glenn, steals away in the middle of the night, leaving her with their two boys, a mountain of debt, and one person to turn to—his lifelong friend and band mate, David Callahan. David helps Alex pick up the pieces of her shattered life, happy to have any time with the woman he’s loved for seventeen years. Every moment with her is ripe with opportunity, and every last idea running through his mind would destroy his brotherly bond with Glenn.

Out from under Glenn’s thumb, Alex can see the person she was before marriage, finding feelings for David she thought she’d left behind in high school. A single kiss and the floodgates open, giving her new hopes of happiness. But when David and Glenn’s band has a chance to be back on top, David must convince Glenn to return. With every passing day, success comes closer, Glenn’s ego inflates, and David and Alex find it more difficult to hide. One misstep and the secret comes out, forcing David to choose between his life’s work and the woman he doesn’t want to leave behind.

What I thought about Hiding in the Spotlight

Alex wakes up one morning to find her husband Glenn has walked out on her. No great loss, since he's a cheater, but he leaves her without any money and with two young boys to take care of.

She turns to David, Glenn's best friend, songwriting partner and band mate. They've been friends for years, and David's been in love with Alex since always.  He takes her in but he can't hide his feeling for her forever, and Alex finds she has feelings for David too.  I loved how they finally get together, and especially David's reactions to it all.

And then life happens. Glenn comes back and suddenly everything is about him, and he isn't too happy that the wife he no longer wants is desired by his best friend.

Karen Booth does a great job with these three characters. I fell in love with David, he was solid and sincere, and most of all patient with Alex, who struggled with the failure of her marriage and the effect of it on her two young boys.  Page and Tyler were awesome kids though, and there were some really nice moments between Alex, David and the boys.

I really liked the chemistry between Alex and David, mostly because David was just so sweet to Alex.  Things were very hot in the sack between these two, once they both let go.

Hiding in the Spotlight is a fast-paced contemporary romance set against the backdrop of an aging rock-n-roll band. I liked that the main characters were a little older and on the downside of their career.  I've read many rock-themed contemporary romances and the fact that this wasn't an up-and-coming band made this story fresh and interesting for me.

Overall, a quick read that will keep you turning the page so you can find out how it all turns out.

Excerpt

“Bad morning?”

The question comes from a rich deep voice to my right. Some stupid actor, probably. The notes of his voice are perfectly modulated as if he spent years perfecting the tone and depth to reach the biggest audience.

“Yeah, what’s it to you?” I challenge because I’m not in the mood to be chatted up by some wannabe in an off, off Broadway production who wants to try out some new lines on a messenger girl.

My sneering gaze melts right off my face when it lands on the owner of the voice. Dark haired and dark eyed, the stranger gives me a slow smile as I take him in. He’s tall, much taller than my five foot four inch frame. I have to trek upward to see the entire package.

And there’s so much to appreciate from his trim waist to the wide shoulders encased in a gray wool suit coat that fits him so well I wonder if he was sewn into it. Tiny stitches on the lapel mark it’s expensive provenance. A dark tanned neck gives way to a firm chin and lush lips. Bee stung is the description that I’ve heard used to describe the same look on super models. Those lips are about the only soft thing on his face.

Those lips and a hollow on the side of his face that appears when those plush lips curve upward. The divot is too shallow and wide to be termed a dimple, but it’s just as devastating.

One hand is stuck in a pocket and his jacket is pushed behind the hand to reveal a flat stomach. No desk paunch on this guy. There’s an intense sexual aura about him. The nonchalant stance, the dark gaze, the lush lips are all an invitation to rip the buttons of his snowy white shirt apart and see exactly what lies underneath all of those fabrics.

I stick a thumb under my jaw under the guise of giving my chin a scratch just to make sure my mouth is closed. This guy? He can practice lines with me all he wants.

Giveaway & Review: Take Two by Laurelin Paige

Summary: He’s ready for his close up, but she’s the one calling the shots.

Book Title: Take Two
Author: Laurelin Paige
Release Date: February 4, 2014
Publisher: Samhain Publishing

On the night of her graduation from film school, straight-laced Maddie Bauers fell completely out of character for an oh-my-god make-out session with a perfect stranger. Complete with the big O.

Seven years later, that romantic interlude is still fresh in her mind. That stranger is now a rich and famous actor. And she’s one very distracted camera assistant working on his latest production. She might consider another tryst…if he even remembers her.

Micah Preston does indeed remember Maddie. Too bad he’s sworn off Hollywood relationships. He allows himself as much sex as he likes—and oh, he does like—but anything more is asking for trouble. For the woman, not for him. Yet knowing Maddie could want more than a movie-set fling doesn’t stop him from pursuing her like a moth drawn to hot stage lights.

But as the shoot nears its end, it’s decision time. Is it time to call, “Cut!” on their affair, or is there enough material for a sequel?

Warning: Contains a dreamy movie star hero, a focus-pulling heroine, off-the-charts instant chemistry, steamy sex in near-public locations, and a new use for lip gloss.

What I thought about Take Two

When Maddie and Micah hook up at the wrap party, there's some definite heat between these them. Their night together is cut short by a friend and although Micah is interested in picking up where they left off, he decides he doesn't want the hassle of a relationship, especially since his career is about to take off. So he deletes her number and moves on.

Seven years later and many career milestones for both of them, Micah and Maddie meet again, and there's no denying the attraction between them, even though it's been some time. But the problem is that Micah has sworn off any sort of relationship, believing they can't exist with the rigors of a Hollywood lifestyle... and Maddie won't settle for a one-night-stand. She wants him, not just his considerable bedroom assets -- she wants to get to know the real Micah. She wants a relationship. For a good part of the first 1/3 of the book, they are at a stalemate.

They manage to wear each other down, and things start looking up for both of them when they decide to give their relation a chance, at least for the remaining weeks of the film shoot. But Maddie is still distrustful, and Micah still can't believe their relationship can work, even as they get closer to each other sexually and emotionally.

I loved the transformation that happens with Micah in this story. He really has to take quite a few leaps of faith. Maddie was a little more frustrating, although I was totally on her side when she becomes the one to walk away.

This was a quick, easy read. There's not a lot of depth or details here, but it made for a fun summer-time read on the lawn chair or beach. I wish Beaumont would have gotten his just desserts, but eh, his minor subplot didn't really matter in the grand scheme of the Micha/Maddie love story.

Overall, an enjoyable head-versus-heart story.

ARC Review: 4 stars for Backwoods by Jill Sorenson

The more you trust, the more you risk…

When plans for a wilderness retreat with her teenage daughter Brooke go awry, Abby Hammond reluctantly pairs up with Brooke's stepbrother and his dad, Nathan Strom, for the weeklong trek. The only thing Abby has in common with the bad-boy former pro athlete is that their exes cheated with each other. That…and a visceral attraction that's growing more complicated with every step through the picturesque woods.

Nathan's wild-card reputation lost him his career and his family. After years of regret, he's ready to fight for what truly matters—and that includes Abby's hard-won trust. When Brooke goes missing, Nathan knows he's her best and only hope of rescue. But the deeper into the rugged mountains they go, the more dangerous the territory will prove—for their safety and for their hearts.

What I thought about Backwoods

Abby is fairly certain her ex-husband is going to back out on a family vacation with their daughter Brooke, so when she ends up taking his place on a hiking trip with Brooke's stepbrother and his father, Nathan Strom, she decides to make the best of it.  There's a unique sort-of family thing going on here, not of blood but of bonds of marriage and ex-spouses.

I thought it was a different and interesting family dynamic.  That's what makes this book a bit different than others in the series-- the inner-workings of these family relationships take center stage and it's all good.

There's sparks from the start between Abby and Nathan and it isn't long before Brooke is playing matchmaker. There's some pretty serious sexual tension between them, and most of the time they can't act upon it because they aren't alone. But I loved the dialogue between these two and especially how Abby tried to help Nathan understand Leo.  And I liked that Abby wanted Nathan physically just as much as he wanted her.

Leo and Brooke are fighting some feelings between them.  She's young, trusting and crushing hard on Leo, and he's trying to do the right thing. He's struggling with keeping their relationship more brother-sister rather than giving into his  feelings and potentially destroying their relationship. But they are young and hormonal and things don't always go as planned. And then there's Leo's anger. He's got some unresolved issues with his dad, Nathan that generate a lot of tension.

But all of the family drama has to go on the back burner when their hiking trip takes a dangerous turn and they become involved with two potential serial killers stalking them in the backwoods.  There's lots of action here as they elude and then have to escape their captors.

I love Jill Sorenson's characters. Her heroes are not just hot, they have a maturity to them that I adore. They are sexy and flawed, and most of the time they are still struggling with whatever is holding them back.  But they also have a sense of honor that shines through, too. I felt like we got a double-dose of that with Leo and Nathan, and personally, I'd love to know what might happen in the future between Leo and Brooke.  I liked the relationship between Abby and Brooke, too. The entire family dynamic between these characters really held my interest.  And there's plenty of suspense too.   Jill Sorenson knows how to write great action sequences and Backwoods had me on the edge of my seat.

Another great addition to the Aftershock series. Recommended.

5 Star Review & Giveaway: Finding Serenity by Eden Butler

Mollie Malone's mom skipped out on her. Her biker dad, always loose and easy with the law, still was able to make her feel loved, and to keep her safe. But thirteen years ago, when his luck finally ran out and he landed in prison, Mollie found herself a new family - a group of friends in the sleepy little college town of Cavanagh, Tennessee, where now they all attend the local university. These girls know about the rotten roots of her family tree but accept her anyway, and the bond between them is so strong and supportive that Mollie is finally able to see past graduation to a future that is bright and secure.

But sometimes the past doesn't stay buried.

Suddenly, inexplicably, there's a shadow behind every step Mollie takes. Someone is lurking in that shadow, threatening not only Mollie, but also the new family she has claimed for herself.

And it isn’t just the past that has Mollie’s life in upheaval. Hunky former Marine Vaughn Winchester - who Mollie really would like to get to know much better - thinks Mollie is just a kid; he's made it clear she wouldn't ever be able to understand the demons haunting him. But if that's what he believes, then why does he keep sticking his nose in her business? And if he thinks she’s such a kid, why does he keep trying to kiss her?

Vaughn’s mind games are frustrating, especially since Mollie knows enough about secrets to be convinced that there's something he isn’t telling her, something he's so far been able to keep hidden. But when that secret is revealed, Mollie is forced into a situation that tests her loyalty and threatens even her closest friendships - just when the shadow of her past returns, and she's going to need them the most.

'Finding Serenity' is book two in the Seeking Serenity series.

What I thought about Finding Serenity

Mollie comes home one night to find her apartment ripped off, all of her deejay equipment gone, essentially killing her livelihood. Her friends come to the rescue, and it's great to become reaquainted with Layla, Sayo, Autumn, Declan, and Joe from the first book in the series, even under some difficult circumstances.

It isn’t long before it’s clear that it wasn’t just some random act. It also doesn’t help that Vaughn, a guy that Mollie lusted after and was rejected by suddenly seems to be everywhere in her business.

Vaughn, a former Marine, jumps right into the situation, one minute flirting with her, the next pushing her away. When the truth is revealed, Mollie and Vaughn are forced together and also forced to face the growing feelings between them. There’s a lot of heat and a lot of frustration in this back-and-forth relationship. At times I wanted to scream at them to just get together, but there is so much going on around them, it’s easy to see how everything in their lives is topsy-turvy.  Not to mention that Vaughn has some seriously disturbing history himself.

There’s an incredibly suspenseful plot to Finding Serenity that just brings this series up a notch in my opinion. I liked the first book in this series-- and I loved this one. There are plenty of good reveals throughout this story, so I don’t really want to spoil the plot and take that suspense and action element away, because it really is done very well especially the drama involving Mojo, Mollie’s biker dad, who as a secondary character lights up the scenes he has in the book. And then there’s always the question of whether Vaughn and Mollie will be able to come to terms and understanding of their own growing relationship.

Eden Butler does a great job with Mollie and Vaughn, taking two slightly prickly characters and making them very sympathetic. Both have dealt with some serious hardships, so it wasn’t hard to cut them some breaks. They aren’t perfect either, and I think that was part of their charm.

There’s a great level of emotion in this too along with the suspense, and I found myself needing a tissue toward the end after an incredibly emotional scene with Mojo and Mollie that knocked my socks off and had me crying in the “good-book” way. Just so many good things to say about this one.

Finding Eden was chock-full of romance, suspense and has an action-packed storyline. I devoured this book in a few hours because I just couldn’t put it down. I’m hooked on this series.

Recommended.

4 1/2 star Review & Giveaway: All Lined Up by Cora Carmack

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

What I thought about All Lined Up

Dallas Cole has lived with football all her life, and after a less than satisfying relationship with her high school quarterback boyfriend, she swears off football players. With her father being coach, it only complicates things.

All Carson McClain wants is a spot on the team and the chance to get a scholarship so he can stay in school. He's focused solely on football, that is until a gorgeous coed falls in his lap at a party one night. There's some serious attraction between these two from the very start, especially since Dallas doesn't know that the guy she kissing is on the team. I was impressed right from the start myself, there's some super hot and sexy kissing right from the start and as a reader I could feel the heat between these two characters.

Of course Dallas does eventually discover that her mystery make-out is on her father's football team. It doesn't go well is an understatement, but she can't really deny the connection she feels with Carson either. Loved the drama in the scene where Dallas finds out this secret scene, it was really terrific!

Both of the main characters are compelling and are dealing with some interesting internal conflicts. There's Carson, conflicted between his ticket to the future--football, and the girl that he can't get out of his head. And Dallas has a whole truck-load of baggage she has to deal with, including soem unresolved issues with her father, her potential career choice, and the football player that makes her just a little bit crazy.

There's a lot to this story, and I loved that it deviated somewhat from the usual formulaic romance. There were some surprises here for me, and when you read 4-5 New Adult titles a week, this was a very refreshing read, with lots of good internal conflict and unexpected drama challenging the couple along the way.

There are some interesting secondary characters in this too. Levi, Dallas's ex-boyfriend has a rather significant and sleezy role to play, and I'm not sure exactly how I feel about Silas just yet. I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen with them and how it played out was very unexpected.

I loved Carson’s maturity and how he handled everything with Dallas. Their relationship built in a very realistic way, with the stops and starts of all young love. But when they managed to get past their hangups, they were oh-so-hot together.

The football sequences were well done too. Great start to this series and I'm really looking forward to more!

Really enjoyed this. Read in just about one sitting because I didn't want to put this down and then went back and read my favorite parts. Definitely a winner for me.

Excerpt

God must be rewarding him for his patience. That had to be the answer. There was no other reason why he would trip over a scenario this sweet. Ivy was outside wearing nothing but a pair of bikini bottoms and a frown.

Blake killed the engine and slowly pulled his boat up to the dock. He tied it up, taking careful steps to secure his baby and make Ivy wait as long as humanly possible. From what he could see, she wasn’t going anywhere, even if she wanted to.

He climbed onto the dock and strolled causally over to the Hudson cabin with his hands thrust into his pockets. Taking his time, Blake soaked in every delicious detail, from Ivy’s irritated scowl to the full globes of her breasts pressed beneath her inadequate hands. He’d never been so jealous of a pair of hands in his life.

His jeans tightened uncomfortably as his inspection ran over her mostly bare body. He was frankly surprised by the reaction. Not because she wasn’t a beautiful and sexy woman—she was; that was a given—but because his dick had a deep, abiding hatred of Ivy. So did the rest of him, but it was his penis that had become the center of national attention for being woefully inadequate. At the moment, however, he had ample evidence to the contrary.

ARC Review: Moon Shine (Takhini Wolves #4) by Vivian Arend

Moon Shine, Takhini Wolves #4
By Vivian Arend

When the past hurts, it bites.

Meet Evan Stone. Laid-back, in-control Alpha of the Takhini Wolves. Life’s not perfect, but he’s got a good handle on his world. At least, he did—until the night he ends up in jail, soaking wet and wondering what the hell just happened.

The “what” is Amy Ryba, a vengeful female who’s decided it’s long past time to make Evan pay for his sins. Amy has spent years tracking him down, and the last nine months working in secret to destroy him. She’s ready for anything—except discovering the shifter she hates is her mate.

Suddenly, Evan’s not so very in control, of himself or his pack. And unless Amy can learn to forgive and forget, she’ll have to do the unthinkable: reject her mate.

With two packs watching, one thing is certain. Their personal issues won’t stay personal for long. If Amy and Evan can’t find a way to work together, there won’t a happily-ever-after for them…or any of the wolves of Whitehorse.

Warning: Contains angsty wolves. Lots of angsty wolves causing explosions of all sorts, playing bad pranks, hacking computers, and having angry sex against a wall or two. Not all at the same time, though, because that would be silly.

Exclusive Excerpt:
He wrapped her arms around his back and rolled her on top. She couldn’t resist licking his neck, tasting the salt lingering on his skin and the passion of his wild wolf.

They lay in a heated tangle for the longest time. Evan stroking her cheek, Amy drawing circles on his chest with her nails. Somewhere in the silence they were connected, and neither of them seemed ready to break the tenuous bond.

It wasn’t forever, but it had been pretty spectacular just the same.

What I thought about Moonshine

This is my third title from Vivian Arend, and once again, I'm left wanting more, and I mean that in a good way.

I've read lots of paranormal romance, but not many where the central characters are shifters. I'm finding out what I've been missing.

Evan is the alpha of one pack, Amy the alpha of another. Amy has a score to settle with Evan. There's only one complication. They are mates in the wolf world, and that just really complicates things.

The two alphas have a lot to figure out, and foremost that how to best take care of their pack. It's a matter of two very different styles of leadership versus the need to give in to their wolf and mate.  I loved the first 2/3 of this book as they try to figure this all out.  I could feel the conflict between their human side and wolf side, as well as their frustrations with each other.  Vivian Arend does an awesome job with portraying this and it pulled me into the story in such a way that I didn't want to put it down.

This was my first book read in this series, and I didn't feel like I missed anything by starting with Book 4.  If anything, it made me want to go back and read books 1, 2, and 3.

The last 1/3 of the book didn't quite reach the emotional level that the first 2/3 did for me. I'm not sure why that was, but it didn't really detract too much from the story for me.  I kept reading and did really love the story of these two wolf packs and these two very hot alphas.

Giveaway & Review: Where There's Smoke by Elizabeth Lee

We are thrilled to celebrate the Release Day of Elizabeth Lee's WHERE THERE'S SMOKE!!!

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE is a New Adult Romantic Suspense novel that you don't want to miss!  The hot cover made me want to read this and I wasn't disappointed.

About WHERE THERE’S SMOKE:
There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He'd let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He'd perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn't just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.

Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She'd saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren't tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she's forced to see that things aren't always as they seem. The people who she'd left behind might not have been saved at all.

In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper's sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE Excerpt:

I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm. Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me. The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us.

The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight. It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops. Now it was jeans and jackets. Well, actually, now it was nothing.

I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done. I wasn't embarrassed. Far from it. In fact, I'd never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry.

“That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips.

“Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him. The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space. “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine. Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he'd commandeered from an airplane parked beside us.

I liked this side of him. The side that wasn't perfect and calculated. The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted. He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control. We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be.

“You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned. “I wanted tonight to be special. I thought we'd go back to my house after we looked at the planes. My parents are gone and...” He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening. Doubting his ability to be perfect. He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things. “It didn't go exactly as I planned, but—”

“It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.” I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his. “And I love you, too.”

That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw. I could probably say the same for him about me. Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn't—which was most of the time. When I was with him, I didn't feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off. He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence. They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time. Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was.

“So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked. “This being your first breaking and entering and all.”

It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his. I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind. He was the good boy. The straight-A student. The doting son.

“Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I'm a regular badass. Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.” He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads. Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams. A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls. “I'm not sure we actually broke into anything. More like casually strolled in.”

We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked. The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business. Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate. I think that night, that's what we’d both thought: What's the worst that could happen? “So what's next then, Clyde? Wanna rob a bank?”

What I thought about Where There's Smoke

Ryland and PIper were highschool sweethearts, making plans to stay together after graduation and Ry goes away to college on a scholarship. But everyone said she wasn’t good for him, and when there’s some major trouble what they say about Pepper seems to be true.

Six years go by. Star-student Ryland never gets out. Never goes to college. The reader doesn’t know why or what happened that fateful night when everything fell apart. But as the truth is slowly revealed, it’s easy to feel sympathetic toward Ry and even Piper.

I liked the story, and I was convinced that Ry still loved her after six years, even though he had some things he had to say first. But like matches and gasoline ;) -- another tragedy strikes, forcing Ry, Piper and Piper’s sister Hadley on the run.

The second half of the book had a nice fast pace, and the story kept moving along. And even though circumstances are very dire for all of them, it gives Ry and Piper time to reconnect.. and reconnect… *wink*. There’s some heat there!

The final resolution of their plight is a bit unbelievable and left me a bit conflicted as to whether the ends justifies the means. But since this is a HEA, it’s all good.

Overall, I liked the characters, the fast pace and the slightly unpredictable plot. A solid 3.5 for me, with an honorable mention for a very hot cover.

About Elizabeth Lee: When I'm not writing or playing the part of wife and mother, you can find me dancing back-up for Beyonce, singing back-up for Miranda, or sunning myself on the beach with a drink in hand. Here's the thing about being born and raised in a small town—you have a very vivid imagination! Now, I channel it all to create stories where the girl always ends up with the right guy, first kisses are magical, and a happy ending is just that!
